💡The simplest demo for Substance viewer there is! Done with the downloaded 3D file from Nasa (I wrote a little post earlier this week with a link to download the file for free) 🚀 What would I use it for in my studio? Help clients visualise 3D files and be able to navigate around the object, without knowing anything about 3D. It's perfect for demoing your results without having to render 100 different views and put them in a folder. Either you can do a live showcase, or you let them explore it themselves. Cherry on top? Here we go, I'm calling this done - sound up! I wanted to bash out something in under a week while keeping everything as polished as possible so I stuck to the "keep it simple" rule and focussed on composition and mood over lots of detail. I thought I would experiment with a quick comparison here for a typical establishing shot, creating a full 3D environment vs creating it with AI, then somewhere in between. This is by no means a conclusive study but more an observation of the process at this current point in time. Both approaches were done fairly quick so LOTS could be improved, and I know there are many other ways to approach this, but you get the idea! 🫠 In terms of how digitally ethical this all is with regards to the data used, I’m not certain, so for this case it’s not for production use just personal development and study. With regards to time actually spent, obviously the AI approach in this case was incredibly fast, half an hour let’s say vs the week of time here and there in 3D. In my opinion, shots like these where it’s just establishing a scene I can really see a use case for this in the future. Of course it’s a bit more nuanced than just that statement with many things to consider but defiantly hard to ignore at the moment. Another useful tool.

Helping students at Sheffield Hallam develop experimental ideas in animation, I’m using Kafka's story, Cares of a Family Man, focusing on the mysterious #Odradek. This creature, a boundary object/thing, exists in the liminal space between being and non-being. It’s a powerful concept for exploring how static objects can transform into animated forms. The Odradek is never fully described—just fragments—so it invites students to assemble their own interpretations and consider how the act of animating gives life to something otherwise lifeless. It encourages deeper thinking, beyond simple abstraction, and asks when objects become things. Using #Harmony, a great #2danimation animation package, I’m guiding them through the process. Although it’s hard to learn, it offers a huge range for animation experiments. Have you thought of any exercises or prompts to guide people through the process of being experimental? We've been weirdly quiet about AI at Meantime Studio, it's been an elephant in the room for a while, if the elephant was made of fire and was shooting bullets around the office with it's trunk. We can't really ignore it, but not ignoring it doesn't have to mean embracing it with open arms. We recognise the potential for some areas of AI to help us in our day to day whilst keeping a watchful eye on the ethics behind other tools. So we're building an AI policy/framework/code of ethics (whatever cool name we think of) to share our stance on AI. It's about being transparent with our clients on what we do, how we've done it, and advising on what acceptable usage looks like. It's about setting a standard for us as creatives, keeping our talents sharp with knowing how to use acceptable tools but not fall into a lazy rut. I believe having an AI disclosure will be an important asset for studios to have in the future, perhaps having a space next to privacy policies on websites. (N)ICE BAG 🧊👜 My latest 3D animation project, where I’ve reimagined Diesel's iconic 1 DR Bag in a cool way. 🥶 Picture this: a stunningly detailed ice sculpture of the bag, slowly melting away, capturing both the elegance and the fleeting nature of fashion. Using the simulation capabilities of SideFX Software Houdini I crafted the melting process, bringing balance between realism and artistry. The final rendering was done in Blender ensuring every droplet and reflection was beautifully captured. Created the golden trace animation completely procedurally with the shortest edge path nodes and using end points where the components touch the motherboard geometry. For anyone trying to wrap their head around why AI has the potential to be such a cost and time saver in GFX, this previz demo by Simon Robson provides a great start. Think of AI as the democratisation of render power; rendering being the process that allows us to take scrappy 3D blocks or crude animations and turn them into something visually appealing. It’s costly, compute-heavy, and often hugely time-consuming. This demo shows how you can shortcut the second half of the process and take a render that would normally take hours and output it in minutes. For a moment, forget everything about text-to-video. We’re still in the MS-DOS era of AI, and it will pass. This is video-to-video, and it has been with us for over a year — but a few weeks ago, it took a leap when it was incorporated into Runway’s Gen-3 video model. It’s a process that can be adapted to skin everything from 3D scans and animated storyboards to filmed footage and actors in a way that isn’t perfect … but the improvement in 12 months has been remarkable (and as Simon says, absolutely fine for previz). But what’s more important is that the first half of his process hasn’t changed. He’s still incorporated all the tools he’d normally use — just fast-forwarded the part where everything is lit, textured, and spends hours on a render farm.

I've spent some time getting to grips with #Midjourney (image generation) and #LumaDreamMachine (a transformer model that creates video from image/text generation) and put together this short edit of what 1950's Paris might've looked like according to AI. There's been so much talk of "AI taking our jobs" over the past couple of years but now that I've spent some time learning how to use it, to me it's simply becoming another tool that we can harness to produce results. Editing in the future will probably involve a lot more focus around prompting image/video generation, similar to coding in a way. That being said, learning how to effectively prompt to get the results I wanted was very frustrating which is why everyone in this video ended up wearing sunglasses. It was a Parisian looking solution to a crazy AI faces and eyes problem. What are your thoughts about AI sites like Midjourney/Luma? Is it worth the hype or are you not really phased by it?
