#Pasic2024 Indianapolis Panel 11am Salón 201 Afro-Colombian Marimba de Chonta Music from the South Pacific Region: Roots, Reach and Evolution The traditional music of the Pacific region of Colombia is vast and diverse, and it encompasses both secular and sacred traditions. For its importance, UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010. At the heart of many of the styles lies the marimba de chonta – an instrument known by many as the piano of the jungle. This year’s panel will focus on the Marimba de Chonta musical traditions from the South Pacific region of Colombia. The discussions will center around topics like the importance of these musical traditions in Colombia and abroad, the challenges this music is facing, how its roots, mallet techniques, patterns, harmonies, tuning, and traditions have evolved through the years, and to discuss ways in which it would be possible to introduce this music to more classrooms or audiences, while preserving its integrity.

Spontaneous trip to see Cosi Fan Tutte this weekend at Edinburgh International Festival and my first ever Opera I was a bit concerned if I'd be able to sit for 3.5hrs unsure what an opera was like. Would I need to make an escape in the interval 😄? I stayed, it was fantastic. I really enjoyed it. What I Loved 😍 - How the performance was stripped back from set, costumes, special effects yet was so captivating and engaging. - The expresiveness of the cast to portray their emotions to the audience. Through song...in Italian & still resonate. - How beautiful and powerful the Italian language is. I tried to imagine it in English and it just didn't sound as good. 😄 - How amazing it was to see the synergy of the orchestra and vocalists within the performances. What I Wondered 🤔 - This was a classical opera and the audience was mostly white, 40+, middle class. The cast had 1 person of colour (although she was lead)...how do we make performances and these mediums of preformance more appealing and accessible to a diverse range of people? *EIF does have affordability program for tickets. Which I think is great for all culture & arts events: https://lnkd.in/eixGgBZS - What are places like Royal Conservatoire of Scotland doing to inspire new generations of classical performers and writers? - How much interpretation is put on the original script or is it pretty much preformed as it was originally written? - Conducting is a workout! To imagine that this piece was written in the 17th century and still resonates with an audience today just shows how creativity is timeless. Looking forward to more shows over the next month.
