Saturday discussion time: to my friends out there that have multiple interests, how do you make the time to get to everything? I need to juggle better. Here is a short list of my current interests (I’m always adding to this list. It’s maddening): Writing Drawing Painting (acrylic, oil, gouache, etc) Clay sculpting Digital Sculpting Stop motion (puppet making, including sculpting, molding, casting, sewing clothing, etc…and then maybe animating them) 3D Printing Painting those 3D Prints There’s more, but I’ll stop the list there And then there’s just regular life stuff, like hanging with family, reading or watching movies and tv (the latter of which I NEVER do anymore) How do you juggle it. Side question: do you buy into the “Jack of all trades, master of none” analogy? Or do you think you can get a certain amount of master of one or two of them?

Having used CLO3D for many years, I've always been intrigued by Style3D. When Style3D launched their #skillupwithstyle3d initiative, it was the perfect opportunity to dive in. I enrolled in their Udemy course, "Style3D Advanced Course for Garment Modeling," and explored the software’s features. Pros of Style3D: ◾Improved Collision: Garments interact smoothly without clashing, enhancing realism. ◾Superior Stabilisation: Particularly beneficial for lingerie design, reducing deformation. ◾Efficient Rendering: Trace Rendering speeds up real-time visibility for quicker feedback. ◾Animation Options: Faster turntable animations, with the potential for transparency effects. ◾Direct Image Handling: Open images directly without workarounds. ◾Flexible Sewing Tools: Use shift to sew multiple elements efficiently without the need for M:N sewing tools. ◾Symmetry: Easily create symmetrical axes ◾Trim Stabilisation: Adjust and view trims including zippers in the 2D window. Cons of Style3D: ◾Limited Smooth Tools: The smooth curve function needs improvement in accessibility and intuitiveness. ◾Pattern Making Restrictions: Adding points and creating intersecting lines can be challenging. ◾Manual Sewing: 3D Pen use in the 3D window doesn’t automatically apply sewing. ◾Resource Intensive: Complex designs can slow down performance compared to CLO3D. Here are five tips for 3D artists working with cloth simulation in Marvelous Designer: 👚👚👚 1.Understand Fabric Properties: Different fabrics behave differently in real life, and the same applies in virtual simulations. Understanding the properties of various fabrics like cotton, silk, denim, etc., will help you achieve more realistic results. Marvelous Designer offers presets for different fabric types, but it's essential to tweak parameters like density, stretch, and friction based on the specific fabric you're simulating. 2.Master the Simulation Settings: Marvelous Designer provides numerous simulation settings that control how the fabric behaves. Spend time experimenting with parameters like particle distance, collision thickness, and iteration count to find the right balance between accuracy and performance. Adjusting these settings can significantly impact the quality and speed of your simulations. 🧑🔧🧑🔧🧑🔧 3.Use Proper Patterns: The patterns you use as the basis for your garments play a crucial role in the accuracy of your cloth simulations. So, here's a rundown of the tools I rely on for my 3D projects: 🧥𝗩𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿/𝗖𝗟𝗢𝟯𝗗/𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲𝟯𝗗 for 3D garment simulation ✨𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗮 for modeling (like 3D trims), creating low poly models, mesh and UV adjustments, and much more. It's a staple in my work! 🖌️𝗭𝗯𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 for sculpting organic surfaces (think trims and avatars) and displacement baking 👗𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲 - I utilize the entire suite and adore each one! Some tools are free, while others require a subscription. Most have affordable or even free alternatives. These are daily essentials for me, but I also use others like Mari, Blender, Modo, Character Creator, and iClone for specific tasks. The biggest challenge with such an extensive toolkit? 🔄Not the learning curve, but rather import/export hurdles. 😅Each software has its format, lacking full compatibility, so managing bigger projects often means spending days just fixing import/export issues. How can 3D help with concept photos? In the early stages of concept development, the goal is to piece together the entire puzzle. Which materials should we use? What is the intended fit? Does the vendor have an initial pattern? Fortunately, 3D technology can bridge these initial ideas, bringing your first physical prototype closer to your vision and design intent. Vendors often have to interpret a lot when they receive a design sketch or technical flat. An illustrator sketch of a simple t-shirt can't accurately convey how tight you want the sleeves or the exact shape of the neck opening. These design decisions can be more effectively visualized on a 3D garment using an actual pattern.   Simple fit decisions, affecting balance and proportions, can be easily identified and corrected before producing a physical prototype.
