Fantastic set of talks today highlighting the unsung hero of drug discovery - Enzymology. Sincere thanks to Argyrides Argyrou , Claire McWhirter and Karl Syson for organising such a valuable and engaging symposium, AstraZeneca for hosting and all the speakers for their fantastic presentations! Really important topics discussed including the non-equilibrium environment of biological systems and the requirement for drug and target to be bound in order to have an effect, and the risks of using oversimplified metrics to support programme progression (from simply underestimating affinity through to fundamentally flawed selections). Data is of critical importance to effectively power decision-making and context is key. With the evolving ecosystem of instrumentation (including BMG LABTECH, SPT Labtech, FORMULATRIX, Tecan) reagents (including Cisbio, Revvity, Promega UK) and analytical capabilities (Genedata, GraphPad Prism) all now delivering the quality and consistency required to deliver the data resolution required, these concepts are becoming more readily accessible. Reflecting on the morning session over lunch highlights to me the still largely untapped potential of kinetic information. As an industry, we have been here before, discussing the advances in capabilities and significant merits on offer. However, this has largely been to an audience that is already receptive and uptake has remained pretty flat. So, how do we shift the dial? My personal view is that success is inextricably connected to more effective communication - I will expand on this concept in a future post. However, I’d love to hear your ideas on how you think we should tackle the challenges we face in translating untapped potential into tangible value. This is such an important subject and a big thanks to British In Vitro Diagnostics Association (BIVDA) for raising it at a Parliamentary Reception this week. Getting innovations into the NHS is challenging, especially for SMEs who have limited resources and significant pressures from their investors to get sales. One of the unfortunate consequences of this is that SMEs are forced to focus their efforts on larger international markets with quicker pathways to adoption, and UK patients cannot access homegrown innovations. Surely there must be a way to reduce the barriers to adoption to ensure British innovations are available in their home market first? #skincancer #melanoma #diagnostic # innovation #AMBLor

We are comparing the blood metal ion concentration and immunogenetics of a group of patients who experienced failure of their joint replacements with a group of patients who are pain free and have maintained high levels of function following their joint replacement surgery. If you would like to be involved – either as an individual surgeon or with your hospital/hospital trust - please do get in touch. The short form name of the study is “Arthrogenex” – to reflect the combination of arthroplasty, genetics and explant analysis. Initial results will be presented at the NHS Implant Analysis Service conference, November 25th, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

NICE already recommended Genedrive as the point-of-care test of choice in its draft guidance before clopidogrel administration in the management of Ischemic Stroke (IS) and Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) patients. I am incredibly proud to announce that we have been awarded a £1.6M project from Innovate UK’s Biomedical Catalyst 2023 Round 2: Industry-led R&D 🙌 This application took a tremendous amount of effort, including working well into the early hours of many mornings to perfect the initial submission and cancelling leave over Christmas to prepare for the interview stage. Innovate UK grants (rightly!) require significant work; the application is scrutinised by five experienced assessors from various areas across Life Sciences. The next-stage interview is then attended by up to ten other people, with our panel including professionals from the NHS, academia, and CDMOs, among others. With a pot of £17.8M, and average project cost at £415,191, only 30 of the 358 applications could be funded 💰 . It is therefore truly gratifying to have so many experts agree that the cause we are developing solutions for is important and worthy of this substantial investment ✊ We do not take this funding lightly and will work tirelessly to ensure the success of our exciting project. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a serious threat to global public health. The UK government has recently announced a new action plan to combat AMR, which includes support for industries to develop new treatments. I believe that a similar action plan is needed in India. AMR is a major problem in India, and it is essential that we take steps to address it. The Indian government should provide support to industries for the development of new treatments and diagnostics for AMR. This could include financial incentives, such as tax breaks or grants, as well as regulatory support, such as fast-tracking the approval process for new drugs/diagnostics. Organisations like Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) are already doing it, but more is needed. The government and industries should also work to raise awareness of AMR among the public and healthcare professionals. This could be done through public health campaigns and educational programs. #publichealth #amr #policy Module Innovations

Congratulations to the Nanocomp team for Commercial Activity of the Year award received at the SSPC, SFI Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals Annual Symposium this week at the University of Limerick. Working with Sarah Hudson on stage 1 of this project was arduous and a drag…as you can see from our faces in the picture below 😃. I mean, you can’t fake that kind of “chemistry”! I loved working with Nanocomp team every day even though they spoke a foreign language to me. I had to learn a whole new field of science from scratch. In every step they patiently taught me the basics, answered my silly questions, and through it all these highly respected and established scientists were always curious and open about what I had to say from the commercial perspective. That is why after a year’s hiatus, I decided to join them again. When I was considering all the opportunities that came my way in the last few months, I prioritized team dynamic and intellectual challange over other factors. Let’s face it, life is not getting any longer. It’s good to know what you need to get you out of bed every day. (Plus I get to say “plasma” in serious sentences a couple of times a week and for a Trekkie that’s reason enough no?!) Nanocomp is a novel solid drug formulation technology that can potentially enable more therapies to reach the market with significant manufacturing efficiencies and a smaller gentler environmental footprint. Considering the number of therapeutic molecules in the pipeline that are poorly water soluble, this is a very worthwhile venture to explore. I’ll spend the next year finalizing the business plan. Congratulations to the Nanocomp team on this award that is a testament to your dedication and hard work on this project: professors kieran hodnett Peter Davern Åke Rasmuson and the young scientists who built up an impressive body of data to support our claims: Ajay Kumar, Promita Bhattacharjee, Marta Bergillos Ruiz and Peuli Ghosh. Many thanks for SSPC, SFI Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals for the award and for investing so much in the supportive environment that allows innovation to thrive. And of course many thanks to Enterprise Ireland for generously funding this project and enabling the Nanocomp team to come together and do more. Fantastic to see the theme of Real World Evidence so strongly represented in this Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency strategy. We, in the UK, have such an enormous opportunity to leverage the incredible Real World Data that is generated through NHS care to better inform decision-making which directly impacts UK patients. I’d like to see us build a community around RWD, more akin to the European model, where industry, academia and the NHS can create an ecosystem to support regulators in getting new therapies and products safely, quickly and cost-effectively to the patients who need them most. Whilst Arcturis definitely has a piece of the UK RWE puzzle, I don’t believe that sustainable, systemic change is possible without collective buy-in and extensive cross-sector collaboration. 🗃️Preparing for the introduction of Joint Clinical Assessment #JCA which will be implemented from January 2025 is about much more than just a different HTA dossier.   🌍The elevation of health technology appraisal to a European level, and the interconnectivity with national processes to subsequently determine value will require new ways of thinking, decision making and integrated planning within organisations.   🫱🏼‍🫲🏼Close alignment between the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Coordinating Group for JCA in terms of notification, timing and “scientific exchange” mean a greater attention to cross functional alignment internally. ❓The anticipation and prediction of multiple PICOs (policy questions examining population, intervention, comparator and outcomes) across the member states and early preparation in terms of evidence synthesis and planning will be central to readiness, particularly given the tight timeframes associated with the process once initiated.   🔬In recognition of this, we have developed the JCA Lab (more to follow soon) which includes a comprehensive JCA Readiness Assessment tool to help companies plan the preparatory shifts and rewiring needed to ensure a successful implementation of European HTA.   🧑🏽‍🤝‍🧑Figuring out where the work gets done, how decisions get made, and the impact of EU HTA on each department, function and affiliate is key to effective implementation.
