Everyone TV - not yet discoverable by everyone but gaining more "Everyone TV, the organisation behind the PSB-backed Freely, has signed an agreement with Amazon that puts the streaming platform on a range of Smart TVs using the Fire TV operating system. From the autumn, Freely will be available on Amazon Fire TV smart TVs and other smart TVs with Fire TV OS built-in, both online and in store." It's quite a move to get a launch on a serious platform like Amazon Fire and #smarttv having only launched a few months ago. It's a mark of the quality of the content behind the platform, with BBC, ITV Channel 4 and Channel 5, the big #publicservicebroadcasters in the UK. And yet, should be it the Freely team who is doing this and fighting to get #psbs the kind of positioning they need in the future. Surely this is something that should involve the Department for Culture, Media and Sport The old model was that the PSBs would be at the top of the EPG. However, that's becoming less and less relevant, and the future is about discoverability within the Smart TV ecosystem. However, if there's no regulation, then it's about who has the deepest pockets to pay, or if a company is promoting their own platform, they will get to the top of the discoverability. STREAMING BUNDLES: Is the cable box making a comeback!? Subscriber churn remains an issue for SVOD services – 42% of US streaming subscribers report that they “'regularly subscribe, cancel and resubscribe,” according to Ampere’s Media Consumer survey covering 1Q24. But bundling streaming services can have a significant impact on mitigating the issue. Ampere cites Disney subscribers as an example: Consumers who had previously churned and then returned to take the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle are 59% less likely to churn within 12 months than those who take Disney+ alone, based on 1Q23 sign-ups. Ampere also found that US resubscribers skew younger (aged 18-44), are more likely to be in family households, and are typically avid media consumers. And with that wide media diet, the cohort is 40% more likely than average to exhibit signs of subscription fatigue and 21% more likely to desire unified access to content across different services. Which makes bundles, Ampere concludes, a key strategy in subscriber retention. The cable box is making a comeback! This time, it's on your mobile device$!

Comcast spin-off - what does it say for the future of the #tvindustry Comcast announced "plans to spin off most of its linear cable networks into a separate company, including such stalwarts as CNBC, MSNBC, USA Network and SyFy...The resulting SpinCo, as it’s being called for now, would create a company with a more focused makeup, and really crummy long-term prospects, given the continued cord-cutting that has sent cable subscriptions plummeting. It also may become the fulcrum for a roll-up of other cable networks." Is that the case, as the article says, that there are few long-term prospects? It does seem set up for a future merger or acquisition. "The nets are mired on the cable box, their content largely also available on direct-to-consumer streaming services such as Peacock, which Comcast is keeping. The cable nets’ revenue models are built on advertising and carriage fees, both declining alongside those shrinking audiences. And cable distributors, including Comcast, are more focused on higher-growth broadband and wireless opportunities." Indeed, it seems that this is more complicated than the headline suggests "Less clear is how the company manages to extricate its cable operations from the units Comcast plans to retain. For instance, how will NBC News be separated from CNBC and MSNBC operations? And ad sales may also face some complicated disentangling." According to Comcast management, both companies will be set up to be profitable and go on the offense. But what exactly is offense for the cable networks? Will they move more and more to streaming? How does that work if their services are on Peacock, which stays under Comcast? In the latest episode of the Radical Moves Ltd Podcast, I spoke again about how streaming services such as YouTube are mimicking the road well trodden by audio services such as Spotify to offer a "leanback experience" with autoplay and suggested next clips. Unlike with physics, in technology adoption: sound typically moves faster than light. VOD-2-Live or VOD-to-Live or Virtual Channels - what has almost happened with FAST. It feels like something that has been discussed on the supplier side for a long time now. Back in 2018 at Vimond we had high fidelity UX designs, but unfortunately we couldn't get the buy-in to take it from the drawing board to prototype. The idea of creating personalised content playlists or channels is something I expect and hope we'll see one day, to combat information overload and analysis paralysis on the sofa. It's something I still speak often about with James Holding Magnus Svensson and Stein Erik Sørhaug - one day we'll get there! "Have you seen this report? The Shared Commitments in a Blended Reality thing? Yeah, it’s ambitious, it’s pragmatic—it's got everything you want in a roadmap for the internet of the future. Human rights, data stewardship, sustainability—it’s like a buffet for societal values. They’re trying to balance innovation with ethics! You know, like saying, 'Let’s invent teleportation, but make sure everyone’s wearing their seatbelt.' But here’s the thing—they say the success of this hinges on implementation. Implementation! That’s like saying, 'This parachute works great... as long as you actually pull the cord.' Historically, these multistakeholder efforts have trouble keeping momentum. You’ve got the EU with their GDPR saying, 'Protect all the data!' and the US saying, 'Eh, just take the data, nobody’s looking.' It’s like trying to get a band to play the same song, but everyone’s in a different time zone. And inclusivity? Accessibility? The report nails it—they say the internet’s getting all immersive and spatial. Spatial! What does that even mean? It means that if we don’t invest in infrastructure for underserved regions, the digital divide is gonna turn into the Grand Canyon. You can’t have a 'blended reality' when half the world doesn’t even have Wi-Fi! What are they gonna blend it with? A flip phone? Oh, and sustainability? That’s the big one. Everyone’s talking about XR hardware, data centers, servers humming away 24/7—it’s like they’re building the internet on a treadmill powered by fossil fuels. They’re saying, 'Yeah, we’re advancing humanity, but at the same time, we’re melting the glaciers.' The industry has to work with environmental experts. 'Green technologies,' they say. You ever notice every tech company loves to say they’re going green? Meanwhile, their server farms are drinking electricity like it’s happy hour. So yeah, ambitious report, good ideas—but let’s see if they can pull it off. Because the future of the internet isn’t just about cool tech. Roblox uses a Roblox experience to gather votes for its Innovation Awards. Makes perfect sense right? So why aren’t many brands and rights holders really using it to gather data to inform and improve their own offerings? Built considerately, an experience should not only be engaging it itself, but can also provide a heap of data to inform other areas of the business. 🍫A well-designed experience could inform users about new product features, flavours or packaging designs - it could even allow users to vote on them, as Roblox is doing here. ✍🏻A well-designed experience could include the users in the selection of a new character in an animated show - which producers then write into future storylines. Giving users a say in the narrative can be a powerful way to secure their interest and ensure that they check out the resultant content. 🏃🏽‍♂️A well-designed experience could allow users to select the colours of an athlete’s kit for their next event, or a hairstyle or their choice of celebration. Again, this brings a level of engagement and social noise that can be powerful for rights holders and only amplifies existing marketing. 🧸A well-designed experience could uncover incremental revenue if a toy brand discovered that an item previously assumed to be secondary was infact super-popular within the experience and was getting a lot of playtime. They would increase the product selection at retail on the strength of the data from Roblox. This does happen, and was even referenced by Spin Master on a recent episode of our podcast. Don’t underestimate Roblox’s power within the flywheel to work hard for other parts of business. For engagement, for data, for community building it is the platform to use if you want to reach Gen Z and A.

While the rest of media talks about "The Streaming Wars" as a zero-sum subscriber game, I've been sounding off for years about how the real war is how these companies liaise (or not) with one another. There will be no winner. Sorry to say. Platform tax, revenue share, carriage deals are probably one of the most heated battlegrounds happening in our industry: - It's why Epic and Spotify are calling out Apple - It's why Disney went dark on DirectTV - Why HBO rolled out Max without Roku and Amazon - And now, it’s the driving force behind The Trade Desk launching its own TV OS. Everyone’s fighting to control how the streaming dollars are split, and part of the reason why I launched The Streaming Wars. This is the front line. To summarize: - The Streaming Wars is real.
