The Sumo Group closures really have broken me a bit, and I need to rant about the state of things. I'm sorry if it seems I'm glossing over all the closures before this one, but so many ex-students went there, so many ex-colleagues passed through there, and so my timeline is just filled with people looking for work. We keep talking and talking about the economic factors involved, Brexit and Covid and this and that ... the thing I can't stop thinking of is that in my life I've watched the world slowly pitch into a place of despondent capitalism. Art has become more about making stars and fame than helping people escape and reflect. A drive for "truth" and objectivity has resulted, paradoxically, in people putting more stock in spreadsheets and numbers than people. I can't help but feel that if you're bleating about finance and trade deals and business decisions, you're ignoring the fact that general support for artistic and creative endeavours has declined sharply and is still declining, even in the so-called "art world". Games are ultimately always going to be the first to fall in a culture war against creativity, because games are ultimately and profoundly pointless things. That's the whole majesty of the medium: they make us feel profound feelings, they help us explore our existence by being separate from reality, but to do so they MUST bring us nothing tangible in return. The truth is that our industry will probably bounce back to some degree, but it's not any financial structures or cost systems that will save game development as a medium and an art form - it's a cultural shift to recognise the importance of expressive and explorative subjective art in the world today, and the need to support creative endeavours without the pressure of financial recompense.

I understand the challenges many face when trying to break into the games industry and find the right role. Before contacting a team member or recruiter, I recommend checking the job listings on the company's careers site to identify suitable positions. This approach not only demonstrates professionalism but also expedites the process. Simply reaching out to inquire about available roles may not be the most effective initial contact, as it can lead to a less fruitful conversation. Oh wow, you do not hear that often.... The entire staff of Annapurna Interactive, the video-game publishing division of Annapurna studio, resigned this month following a dispute with its owner. Annapurna Interactive President Nathan Gary and his team had been negotiating with Megan Ellison to spin off the video-game division as an independent entity. Come on UBI, we all want you to win, stop being such a silly goose. These two things are at odds with each other and this is why they are struggling, whilst you can marry up a "player-centric approach" whilst providing value to your shareholders, it's the fact these things even exist on an even playing field that they are struggling. Everytime, at least I can think of, that the shareholders pockets are considered as important as the game itself, the game does not do well, or at the very least it does poorly and has to be saved later by ripping all of that stuff that was put in to "make shareholders happy" out of it. Games make significantly more money when people actually want to play them, it's not complicated. So Ubi, as the creator of some of my favorite games, as the place I dreamed to work at as a kid, as a megalith of our industry, please go back to basics. go back and look at what truly made far cry 2 amazing, what made half the planet fall in love with roof jumping assassins and what ultimately led to your gargantuan success, because it's not pleasing shareholders, it's simply making games we all want to play. I know it's nowhere near this simple but for the love of god, we could all be playing the best pirate game ever made if you had focused more on the fun and less on the 1. All the best, your once biggest fan. P.S bin off live service outside of siege, you're clearly not cut out for it.

Improve bullet points in your CV with one simple tactic. 1 framework to rule them all. Use this: Action - Work - Outcome (or AWOOO 🐺 so you can howl like a wolf) Action - Specify what you did. • Use action verbs: adapted, boosted, created, reached, improved, etc. You get the idea. • Avoid overusing the common ones like managed, and worked. Work - Explain your influence on the project. • Precision is king. Write what YOU did specifically. • Keep it concise, 1-2 lines. Save the details for later. Outcome - What was the result? • Incorporate numbers and metrics when possible. Most roles have measurable outcomes. • This is the part that is the most interesting (shows your impact) and is missing the most often (so it just looks like a generic bullet point for a position). Examples: • Designed a live event that boosted player engagement by 10% and increased revenue by 30% • Built a tool that accelerated designers' work and cut time spent on daily tasks from 3h to 1h. If you can't think of any metric because it's hard to find try to find another result. For example, if the core part of your job is to take care of your company's presence at various events you can write that you prepared X number of events and all went smoothly without any major issues. This has got me curious... I always enjoy reading Games Jobs Live's monthly report on the state of the job market in games. One glaring statistic for me in this months report is that 72% of games studios in the UK require some form of onsite presence. Why I found this glaring? I speak to many candidates daily and one requirement that often comes up from a candidate is that they are only looking for a remote role. It's hard to put an official % on how many that is but certainly more than half the candidates I speak to only want remote working. I get the benefits to both onsite and remote working, I have done both in my career. But why such a disparity between what a studio wants and what a candidate wants? I don't have the answers but I would love to hear what everyone else thinks? For studios, what tangible differences have you found having everyone on-site has made? Candidates, what have you found to be the biggest draws to working remotely? #gamesjobs #recruitment #jobs

🤯 So this happened? I WAS NOT ready to see my name along those brilliant people! I've been shortlisted for Diversity Star at the Develop:Brighton Star Awards! And I don't even know where to start??? ➡️ The industry has broken my heart more times than I can count in the past 6 months (year really), and I would be lying if I said this hasn't affected my mental health. Recruiters & Talent Acquisition are in the front line when it comes to layoffs and hiring. We hear people's stories, we connect, and then we have to inform them of decisions we have no power over. It hasn't been a fun job lately. ⚓ What has been giving me strength is all the little things I do to make this industry a tiny bit less gatekept to groups that have been HISTORICALLY under recognised. In the Aftermath of #SeptemberSurge 🎰 I am one of the final candidates for 2 roles now, with 3 of 9 active interviews sending regrets and the the other 4 quietly sitting out in the past few weeks. I also have started talking with 4 new studios, as I cannot afford to stop until there is an offer and my green #opentowork banner comes down. The final payment of government employment insurance benefits to support me and my family during unemployment was deposited in the past week, too. My total application count reached 17 in September, which also resulted in half of my active interviews during this month. Subtracting those 4 applications plus 3 additional immediate rejections, leaves me with applications for 10 studios that I have not heard from, yet, or have already booked me for initial screening appointments in October. 📞 Almost 60% of my September applications alone resulted in scheduling a first phone call. ✔ I completed 13 calls and panel interviews. I finished one design test quickly, and the other I had to <painfully> abandon; after 2.5 weeks of all my extra hours outside childcare and interviews went into it. ...but this is all a lot of work. I know you are working through similar struggles, too. ⚡ Once again I'm in awe of your powers if you've achieved 30+ recent applications or side-door convos with studios in the last 4-8 weeks! That's regardless of your success rate or other numbers. Always take breaks as needed, but I know you can get through this. So keep making the best decisions for you, even if that means you ignore the state of the #gamedev industry. One last reason to celebrate with me today. 👾 Earlier this week at UnrealFest, the playable arcade cabinet version of my game Broken Wing was on display for the public. I am grateful to Ed Bennett, Robert Percival, and Dan Johnson for troubleshooting many of the fellows' games so they would work on the machines... instead of spending that time enjoying the conference! And also for capturing some evidence of Broken Wing being played for my amusement.

You wanna know what really Grinds My Gears? Candidates being burned by Recruiters. It is the only logical explanation for the following I've experienced... Right? Because it couldn't possibly be me?!? 🙄👀😝 Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight????? 🤣😂😅 Over the past few months, I have seen profiles with the "Open to Work / Open to Network" tag active & then I reach out to them about a role, only for them to never reply back to me... & then I see a post from them looking for work / highlighting their profile for potential opportunities... Since it couldn't possibly be me, is it: ⚙ Maybe they had so many invites / job inquiry messages, they missed mine? ⚙ They're just making a go of it directly by only replying to the CEO of a Studio they're interested in? By pass the Recruiter altogether, got it! ⚙ They're really not looking & have found a great way to get back at Recruiters due to a prior bad experience... maybe?? ⚙ They're really just AI & not human profiles... could be???? The scenario is real & the wonders on my end are more kidding... but if you're looking for a role & have the banners up, why are you not actively networking or replying back when you get a message about a job? If it's really me, just say so & I'll understand... but when you put out a separate message asking for support & have ignored a reach out about an opportunity... I'm not trying to irk anyone with this either, it's just what I've seen going on in the market & I don't understand it. "Thanks for your application, but you're overqualified" What the hell does that even mean? It was hard to believe at first, but nowadays I am regularly speaking with people who have 15-20 years of industry experience and have a hard time landing their next job. I recently had a chat with a fantastic individual who received a couple of "Sorry mate, we would have no idea what to do with you and where to put your skills". So, what the hell does "overqualified" mean? 1) The manager is afraid you're going to get bored quickly. After all, you've done all those tasks a couple of years ago, so how you can find them enticing? 2) The manager is afraid you're going to leave as soon as a better offer will come across. They do have a budget to fill a Senior role, not a Director. 3) They would have to manage someone who is most likely more experienced than them. This is a challenge which requires a lot of self-esteem and believing in your ability. Anything else we should add to the list?

You asked for it! 😂 Keeping up with my Job Hunt™️, a LinkedIn Original Series. Job Hunter's Journal Week 2 🧡 ➡️ Motto: What now? This week we had to get creative. 𝑨𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒖𝒕, 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒓𝒖𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒋𝒐𝒃𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓. Normally this tends to happen around week 3-5, however, the games industry is going through one of the most challenging times yet (IMO because we didn't plan our workforces carefully and conservatively the past 3 years, but no point crying over spilt milk). Being pragmatic about this, I can essentially do two things: 🟣Start fully applying for jobs outside of Games, which entails: •Figuring out which industries I feel connected to and/or would be good at. •Mapping them to understand who are the main players and main products. •Remake my job hunting documents to show my full skillset plus transferrable knowledge. •Connect with heads of people, heads of recruitment and influential people in those industries. •Apply like there's no tomorrow. 🟠Brainstorm how I can add value to people, and monetise my skillset while passively job hunting, which looks like: •Connecting with and having initial chats with different game recruitment agencies. •Writing down a few blurbs about myself (a short paragraph selling the candidate's USP) to assist those agencies. •Looking inward to assess my skill set, and past experiences, to try to come up with solutions within recruitment to common problems. •Conceptualising a product (by product, I mean something that adds value and has a monetary value, it can be a workshop, a strategic review, a consultation...) I feel confident and comfortable delivering/selling. •Making a beautiful deck for it using Canva. •Business Develop my way around town. I'm not ready to job hunt outside #GameDev just yet. So I've taken the second route. --- 🚨 While I was writing this post, I realised that many candidates aren't aware of the number of game-focused recruitment agencies out there.
