I've mentioned the insights from Mark Ellaway and the team at Bigfork Limited before. This report is well worth a butchers. Two takeaways that chimed with me are that '75% of B2B buyers prefer a rep–free sales experience.' and that what buyers really want from a website is information to help them buy!

Buzzing after a fantastic session on marketing data at #ALPSP2024 from Lou Peck, Claire Webber, Dustin Smith and Natasha White. I have so many thoughts on how marketing absolutely has to be driving our publishing businesses forward, in deep collaboration with our colleagues across other departments. Firstly, with the landscape shifting dramatically thanks to OA, rising research outputs from India, China, Japan and Africa, and the pressure to deliver better experiences in a more B2C-style world, it would be a serious misstep for any organisations to rely on previous assumptions and experiences to make decisions about the future. Marketing departments have a real value to bring, by representing ALL customers, backed by data, to ensure opportunities are not being left on the table. Secondly; with my technology consultancy head on, I think publishers need to look beyond what is traditionally seen as ‘marketing data’, to enrich our customer insights and uncover new information that can inform strategy. For example, board reports, conference reports, reviewer feedback, anything where information is currently being kept in documents or siloed away, with the right tooling can be extracted, enriched and turned into useful insights that can provide clarity for decision making. I have many other ideas and thoughts about the tremendous opportunity for better data use within publishing - grab me at a coffee break or message me here to pick my caffeinated brain!
