Another day in the office 🎥 Getting the best for your clients means understanding their wants for the end result & formulating a process that allows you to get them there, whilst not making it exhaustive. I’ve come to realise over the past few years that the number one priority & focus is never the cameras, the audio, the scene, the technicalities or the equipment, it’s the client & their experience. It’s kind of like that old poker adage- you play the person, not the cards. So here’s a little example of what that means in real life. I’m explaining how to perform a natural yet convincing ‘dip & kiss’ shot & as you can see, by focussing on my interaction with my subjects in a relatable way I’m able to extract a great moment for them. #videography #videocreator #videographers #weddingindustry #filmmaking #clientexperience

**Last few spaces available for HETV Freelancers in and around the Midlands** Free Workshops and Industry Networking opportunities: Monday 1st July, Birmingham. Alison Surtees, Shirley Benson and I are facilitating an afternoon of workshops on CVs, resilience and being a freelancer followed by facilitated networking in the evening. This event was commissioned by the ScreenSkills HETV Regional working group - we've hosted three events so far - Manchester, Bristol and Leeds with over 200 participants, lots of connections made and some fabulous feedback from attendees. We've had people at all levels come along - from entry level to HoD. Day 2 of Content London, and I have a confession to make… I have seen every episode of Murder, She Wrote 🫢 . That's why the Secrets of Cosy Crime Success session was a must for me! A big thank you to Nim Geva (Quizzical Pictures), Sally Lindsay (Saffron Cherry Productions), Hanne Palmquist (Filmlance), and Janni Helleskov (Sequoia Global Alliance) for sharing their insights and experiences. 🔍 Why Cosy Crime Works Cosy murder mysteries are having a moment, offering audiences the perfect blend of escapism and intrigue. ✨ Key Takeaways from the Session: 👉 Winning formulas: Build a family storyline with likeable, even camp, but complex characters. Cosy (or Blue Sky, as they’re known in the Nordics) crime is all about “safe danger.” 👉 Urgency: Mysteries should be solved within a tight timeframe – 3 days seems to be the magic number. 👉 Audience respect: A great mystery never patronizes viewers. The #creative industries make up a massive 5.3% of the Welsh economy and it's dominated by micro businesses! Eighty percent of companies in the sector employ less than ten people. That was the finding of new research by the FSB Wales (Federation of Small Businesses) In the light of these stats, and the difficult economic times facing many in the sector, can I repeat my call for public sector organisations to make sure as much of their creative work as possible goes to micro businesses, rather than to larger firms who have capacity to jump through complex procurement hoops! #procurement #wales #smallbusiness #media #creativeindustry

😬 "I haven't got time to send you a written quote, so just let me know if you want me to get the job done and will sort" I'm sorry, I'm just not going there! As a provider of multiple services within the media and marketing space, I often partner with other creatives on certain deliverables to ensure the best, and most timely results for my clients. But clarity is a 110% priority for me. One thing I haven't got the capacity for is: "I thought this was included" "You never mentioned you needed" "It's obvious this would cost more" I. Need. Clarity. ✅ Tell me WHAT you will deliver. ✅ Tell me HOW much it will cost. ✅ Tell me WHEN I can expect it by. If any of those are wishy washy, I'm out. So if a provider voicenotes me saying it will cost between £X and £X but I haven't got time to send you a proposal, there's no green light coming from me. Not because I'm difficult. Not because I'm mean. But because there's no need to make a mess out of what can simply be avoided. Quoting properly takes time and effort. I get it. But the returns are far greater.

I sat down with the founder of a charity a few weeks back to film for their upcoming campaign. She insisted on reading her neatly prepared script from a paper. I gently tried suggesting otherwise, but she wasn't having it. "I hate being on camera" "I don't know what to say" "I've never done this before" So, I addressed each concern one by one. "Forget the cameras, talk to me" "You know what to say, you launched and run this organisation!" "You've spoken to many." And so, I confiscated the paper, and had a conversation. The cameras rolled, but no one cared. The mic was recording, but no one was listening. It was just a genuine, focused conversation. The results? Zero scripted, generic or fluffy content, and a 100% deep, meaningful and communicative recording, with information that I would have never received otherwise. And that's one of the reasons The Nexus Podcast is being launched. Because if great people are accomplishing great things, surely, we ought to hear the real story.
