de-procurement(ing) you as a 46 year old with far too much experience of how it actually goes down → more times than not, I don't manage to deal with the stuff on my morning priority list, because by 9.38am a new supplier request lands and it's the first I've ever heard of them → typos are a *common* occurrence in my e-mail communications because I'm just looking to stay on top of an inbox messier than a cat litter tray during a week long feline lock in → I often get frustrated that despite being a highly trained and experienced negotiator, actual time spent negotiating in Procurement is c. 3.2% of a working week → I don't set aside time everyday to respond to cold sales e-mails, and I can't get back to every single stakeholder query in 24hrs [because I refuse to burn myself out trying to do so, sorry not sorry] → my first year in Procurement I did not feel I'd landed my dream job. I survived and masked the stress with cigarettes and alcohol [you can't take the boy out of the 90's] → I'm 11 years in and get anxious I've missed something huge every time a contract finally goes to signature [working on it though!] → The latest Procurement trends exhaust me (Blockchain, AI) → I get anxious over what the *next step* for me will look like one day → I struggle to keep on top of every Procurement query from my stakeholders and some days my patience with spend stupidity wears really thin → I sometimes underestimate the power of asking the basic question "do we really need this service/ product" because imposter syndrome tells me it's not my place to ask this. it might look sleek from the outside, but it's pretty messy over here too. your usual reminder → the internet's not real. stop comparing yourself to 5% of a stranger. __________ P.S. what was I thinking in this picture? 😀 Best caption in the comments wins a shoutout in my newsletter 👇

Coming from the world of buying and procurement, I do get it .. it’s tough for suppliers trying to squeeze your priorities into a busy and overworked buyers to do list, but there is always a good strategy to follow. For one, being persistent without bordering on nuisance is key. Personally suppliers contacting me every 4 weeks or so was acceptable for a general business update and opportunities to grow brand and category. Secondly know the buyers current challenges and company objectives and align. Present solutions and opportunities to grow. Your updates should include valuable insights and meaningful news about your brand and how the buyer can capitalise on this. Speak and present in their language. A buyer won’t care for volume performance updates in litres or Kilograms. Follow up with intent and capture salient actions and next steps. Ask questions that encourage dialogue and a response. On the flip side, Don’t shy away from buyers calling you if they are faced with any disruptions to supply for example. Face into the challenge and over communicate as much as possible to instil confidence. Most buyers are busy on Mondays & Friday afternoons, as well as peak trading times for their category. If you want to be involved in range reviews, do your research & try to targer when they are actively looking at their range. Most buyers will actively share a range review calendar (hopefully). Lastly be patient and be respectful. Buyers do need time to discuss a proposal internally. Give them some time before reaching out again. It does take time to build a strategic and collaborative relationship with a buyer. Be persistent but respectful, add value and you will make that break through!
