I've certainly seen cases where too much data can gloss over the real issues, meaning they don't get fixed. Good luck to everyone sitting their CIPS - The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply this week! This month, all exams are Objective Response (OR) format, so they are taking place in a single week. As a result, the Lean Procurement Ltd. exam centre at North East Scotland College is operating at its largest capacity ever, ensuring as many students as possible can take their exams with ease. Passing CIPS exams requires varying depths of comprehension in all the areas of the syllabus (you don't know what is going to pop up on exam day!), depending on the level of study. Generally, at the lower levels such as Level 3 and parts of Level 4, the focus is on foundational knowledge—remembering and understanding key procurement principles and concepts. At these levels, it's essential for learners to develop a solid grasp of procurement's core functions, terminology, and strategic importance. As learners progress through parts of Level 4 and all subsequent levels, the examinations demand a more advanced appreciation of both the core principles and the introduction of more complex topics. Here, higher-level thinking skills come into play—application, analysis, and evaluation are crucial for tackling real-world procurement challenges. Students must demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge in different contexts, critically analyse procurement scenarios, and evaluate strategies to solve problems effectively. At these advanced levels, it’s not just about knowing what procurement is but understanding how to apply procurement concepts to add value, manage risks, and contribute to the overall success of organizations. Evaluating the effectiveness of sourcing strategies, contract management practices, and ethical considerations all require an in-depth appreciation of the entire procurement lifecycle. Procurement as the Plumbing Quite often in the organisations I help, procurement is seen as the plumbing. It has a small team, often one person (working very hard I may add), who is nowhere near the exec team but knows how to make sure the pipes don't leak and advise on compliant processes so things don't fail. They may have a forward plan of contracts coming up for renewal and try and work with colleagues to help them keep services running and the goods coming in. But it's rarely part of a wider transformation programme. It frequently isn't included in helping to redesign what the Customer actually needs and they don't input into delivery options : stop, share, partnership, innovate, insource, combine, redesign, re-prioritise. Quite often outsourcing is seen as a solution to de-risk the organisation and place it on an outside provider - without the full acceptance that it is still the procuring organisation's responsibility to own service delivery risk. There are massive opportunities for step change every time we look out into the market. Local Government and Housing can make great inroads into generating efficiencies, plugging skills and resource gaps, and diverting funds into the needs of the vulnerable. As Lean Procurement Ltd. student numbers grow we're proportionately seeing more learners facing challenges unconnected but impacting their studies. These challenges are usually unforeseen at the start of their studies. Family and personal illness, bereavements, vastly increased workloads and so on. Often students get frustrated and put themselves under pressure,, trying to be a 'Super-juggler' and attempts to do everything and push through. What we say to these students is simply 'stop'. We're living in a world that there's an increased level of pressure with a Gallup poll from earlier on in the year showing 28% of world employees in a state of constant burnout. Taking on a challenging qualification such as CIPS - The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply learners' need to be on their 'A-Game' and these set-backs prevent this for happening. There is enough flexibility in the qualification to pause and pick up again when student is ready and we support them during the process and provide suggestions and advice. Personal development and progression, in my mind, is a philosophy that lasts a lifetime, something that's built inside you by developing positive habits. A few months here and there won't dramatically effect outcomes. Sure it can be frustrating, but temporarily focusing your energy on more important matters is a must. Remember, taking care of your well-being is paramount to your long-term success.
