Ofwat urged to increase smart metering allowances: https://lnkd.in/eCf2-2AZ article by Ruth Williams MOSL (description of who they are at the end of the post) have come out to say they are concerned that slashing the amount of money that water companies have asked for, to implement smart metering means that more expensive / tricky installs could be put at risk. These would probably include the larger Non-Household (NHH i.e. business) users where you could get the most water saving. At the top end Affinity have seen a 59% reduction in their smart budget and need to reduce water requirements to protect the chalk streams they have in the area. I would go on to point out that Ofwat have proposed to implement a solution where water companies are only paid for meters that operate as smart with very high connectivity thresholds. This could also encourage water companies to install meters where it is easy rather than where it is most beneficial (to ensure they can cover costs). Water companies have a target for the first time to reduce NHH water use by 9% which focuses on outcomes. This is an absolute figure with no accommodation for business growth and does not involve retailers who have the billing relationship with end users (a whole other post needed on this!). Does the move by Ofwat to reduce budgets and control inputs make what is already challenging, even harder to deliver? #boldthoughts #smart #water Who are MOSL: In England and Wales for domestic, Household customers, water companies have a direct relationship with their end users. Essentially water companies distribute water and charge customers for the service directly. Businesses are able to choose their retailer and pay their water bills to them. Water is still distributed by water companies who charge wholesale, to retailers. It works more like the UK gas-elec market. There is a need for more inter-operability and clarity on roles/responsibilities with this overseen by MOSL, the Market Operator.

📣 Scotland's solar industry calls for restoration of interest-free loans for residential solar and battery storage. Solar Energy Scotland (SES) is urging the Scottish Government to reinstate interest-free loans for solar and battery systems to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon homes. SES chair Josh King argues that these loans are "unique in their ability to offer quick, tangible energy savings for households." He also emphasised the importance of these loans in supporting the growth of the clean energy economy, stating, "Investment to accelerate renewable energy in residential properties can not only reduce bills, it can create significant growth in the clean energy economy." https://lnkd.in/eFjBjPwB Energy UK - an excellent response to the latest REMA consultation for which I support the general views of EnergyUK's membership, specifically around protection needed for existing PPA deals (either via an IPP and the CfD, corporate or utility off-takers) "Energy UK members believe that full grandfathering is essential for all existing assets where investment decisions were made on the basis of national pricing and lacked certainty regarding the final REMA reform package. This includes CfDs, CM agreements, and CPPAs. The Government must promptly clarify the process of grandfathering to uphold investor confidence." The UK renewable energy market is making exceptional progress under constrains around ambiguity of future legislation and difficulties faced with grid connection queues. Great work is on-going to ensure that the UK market is equipped for a future that will be dominated by renewable energy, inherent intermittency and storage, however we need to ensure that we provide the most desirable market signals possible to ensure continued (and increased) levels of investment. Tomato Energy , which is the first energy supplier in the UK to introduce personalised energy tariffs that allow you to shape your contract based on your own lifestyle, say increased dissatisfaction with the cost of electricity means there is an acute demand for communities to generate their own power.
