Ouch. We REALLY need better community involvement in solar farms. Partial community ownership is the strongest way to get people on board. UK solar trade body Solar Energy UK recently said similar in their best practice guide: https://lnkd.in/ezgBeCeH "In some circumstances, there may be an opportunity for communities to share ownership of a solar farm project. Shared ownership gives local individuals and community groups the chance to make an investment in a commercially owned solar farm. This can open new financial streams for the community and build an active body of stakeholders who can share the financial benefits across the community. A very interesting debate has started in the UK about mandatory rollout of (not so Smart) Digital Meters. Serendipitous considering the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is about to make a Final Determination on the same issue. What none of this impacts is that the energy business have an interesting conundrum … there’s money in them (from a simple infrastructure point of view, there’s service subscriptions, and opportunities to make better margin and profits if the (Energy) “Supplier” (aka retailer or bigger bugger gentailers in Australia’s NEM) gets to control the data … and optimises it for them to manage supply .. Agh … conundrum I said … yes if the consumer gets to control their own data, and has innovators developing services to use their data to drive Energy Cost Efficiency … the traditional energy retailer would be world of pain …. Shrinking revenuess and less volatility. Some interesting work still ahead for the AEMC - amazing after a 3 year review of Metering, publication of a comprehensive Final Report (30/8/23) that there’s still deep information to uncover, insights to be achieved … especially if Consumer Centricity and Community Benefit is the overriding objective. Btw - Matt Roderick bought this into my feed with the following comment … “It’s funny reading this story, back in the day British Gas was heavily involved in influencing how smart meters were rolled out. Every discussion and debate had BG in the room, including the one that decided the rollout would be Supplier led and the installation would be opt-in for consumers. Interesting to see that one involved in the decision now don’t like it but one who wasn’t involved (Octopus Energy didn’t really exist back then) very much support it. UK Carbon Regulator is essential for the functioning of a net zero economy - Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) released its Operationalising a Carbon Regulator report, which aims to guide the development of a robust regulatory framework for carbon accounting in the UK. ESC states that a Carbon Regulator would be “crucial” to the standardisation of carbon accounting practices, emphasising that the implementation of a Carbon Regulator is essential for the functioning of a net zero economy by: reducing investment risks; building investor, business, and consumer confidence; and levelling the playing field for innovators. The report outlines that a UK Carbon Regulator could utilise its potential position as a first mover to promote the credibility of UK low carbon industry, while demonstrating the value of nationally coordinated carbon accounting regulations.
