When women thrive, the world thrives. This enduring message guides Fondation Chanel where our current programs directly impact the lives of over 9 million women and girls around the world and indirectly we impact the lives of many millions more through policy work and systems change. Over the past few years we have increased our work on the intersection of climate and gender, recognizing that women are often those most impacted by the climate crisis and that we won’t solve the climate crisis without both men and women at the table. To date we have granted over $25m to these partners focussed on women-led climate resilience and justice. An example of this are the entrepreneurial community and nature stewards at NEWS (Nature Environment & Wildlife Society) in India, helping to restore mangroves and strengthening their communities economic autonomy and resilience to climate change. Since 2011 approximately 16 million mangroves have been planted by thousands of women - improving biodiversity, protecting from flooding and providing opportunities for additional income by protecting and restoring the shrinking mangroves. As we enter the Summer seeing record temperatures across the globe already this year I would like to recognize our partners in Fondation CHANEL dedicated to addressing the gender and climate crisis and building gender and climate just future. www.naturewildlife.org

I told myself this brand has everything to be in the top ten in the luxury sector. But it was necessary to refocus on the heritage of house codes by innovating on contemporary/fashion/luxury design with 15 to 20% dedicated to ultra luxury and the rest luxury as it was. I had written one or two posts on this subject. Because the problem of #Burberry as of #Gucci. I do not have an answer but does traceability sells ? I do believe that consumers value sustainability but is it an after thought or can it actually affect what piece of jewellery a consumer picks ? At the end of the day, the only truly effective way to limit our footprint in the world is to consume less. The more bell and whistle you add to selling say a simple pendant, the more costs are incurred so there needs to be a better way to promote traceability and sustainability. Are we actually solving a problem we created ? Do we have traceability information for most of the goods we consume ? Do we need such information at the product level ? At what costs ?

Luxury companies embrace sport to harness cultural capital If you’ve been watching the Olympics, you may have noticed that the winners receive their medals on Louis Vuitton trays. LVMH-owned CHAUMET also produced the medals, each with a small piece of metal from the Eiffel Tower. Many other LVMH-owned brands have a presence in Paris through a sponsorship deal worth an estimated € 150 million. But LVMH is not alone. Prada Group is a sponsor of China’s women’s football team. Zegna’s Thom Browne has dressed FC Barcelona; Loro Piana is the official outfitter of Juventus Football Club and Chivas Brothers has sponsored Manchester United. Tiffany & Co. has sponsored the NBA. Aston Martin F1 Team re-entered the world of Formula 1 in 2021/22 after decades’ long absence. So why is luxury embracing sport even more than before? Live viewing sets sport apart One of the biggest differences between sport and nearly every other form of entertainment – that is often streamed - is that you must watch it live to be engaged in the cultural conversation. This means that it drives a huge volume of live viewers, that is very valuable for brands. Appeal to a broader audience Embracing a wide range of sports is also a way for luxury brands to appeal to a broader, more aspirational audience. For whilst historically luxury brands were involved in moneyed sports such as sailing (Prada); polo (Ralph Lauren); and tennis (ROLEX, TISSOT), today many have embraced sports such as football and F1. Netflix documentaries have boosted sports’ appeal Netflix documentaries about particular sportsmen (eg. David Beckham) and sports (eg. Such as F1 through Drive to Survive) have increased the interest and engagement in many sports, and in some cases drawn in the female viewer. Sports stars most followed on social media Sports stars have become the new Hollywood. Cristiano Ronaldo is the most followed celebrity on social media, with greater numbers (917 million) than any Hollywood celebrity, such as Selena Gomez (688 million followers). After all the speculation around the successor to Virginie Viard at CHANEL, Bruno Pavlovsky spoke with Le Figaro and delivered a dose of common sense to cut through the hyperbole of the past month. In essence, he rightly says CHANEL is bigger than any creative director and is not willing to sacrifice their house codes to accommodate a designer’s vision. Read this. (Google translated from French, so be aware of nuance). “What I am sure of is that the ideal system for us is not to recruit an Artistic Director who offers the same thing in every house they visit. Too many Artistic Directors lose the meaning of the brand. Chanel has a product that exists, a strong product and the power of Karl, like that of Virginie has been to evolve it, to build using the best of the past, each with their own vision, but always at the service of the house. We will never make a clean slate of what exists at Chanel. There is a framework, and the artistic direction must work within this framework. We can make it move from within, but certainly not make it explode. We have the opportunity to give a new impetus, to shake things up, to enrich the house with a different vision. But always within a framework. If we find a great profile who tells us: “I love Chanel, I’m going to do Chanel, but I am not going to do tweed” It’s not going to work.” Clear, confident and on-point, right? That’s rare, because most designers (and executives) who step into big jobs feel the need to immediately drive change and justify their worth. CHANEL is not a fashion brand; it is bigger and more culturally important than that. It doesn’t need a new font, logo or a monogram dug out from the archives.
