Really good piece this on the lurking challenges for the technology that everyone’s talking about but many people don’t know what to do with. There’s about to be a huge bloodbath for VC-backed lightweight LLM wrappers. But also big questions for OpenAI’s business models. An Enterprise model for ChatGPT might be a thing, but that interface isn’t great for everyone and a lot of the value already freely exists in Bing.

It's not about cheapening the experience or earning less due to poor technology. #FAST and #FASTChannels need a new format to manage losses, but audiences demand quality. I have spent some time formulating carefully my thoughts on this report. TLDR; A massively biased report that because of the bias misses critical issues that make its entire focus invalid. 1. The point made by the OFCOM Future of TV report is that the change is driven by consumer choice - which is not 'controllable', the decisions need to be managed. 2. The issue to be addressed is how to deal with the inevitability that the cost of providing a completely separate infrastructure to support linear consumers will mean that Broadcast is not financially viable at a point in time that is in our immediate future. 3. The report was targeted at driving responses from the industry on exactly HOW to manage the sunsetting of broadcast infrastructure in a controlled way, including an option that kept a cost (not profit) driven base minimum service to cover those who are slowest to make the transition, and to ensure minimum service to those who are left out of the IP transition. The option is not mandated as the number of those left out may be so small, that to run this minimum service may not actually make any sense. 4. The issue of cost is how to deal with the ADDITIONAL COST of running two separate infrastructures, where one is only for delivery of linear TV, and the other (WHICH WILL HAPPEN ANYWAY) covers all services, including ALL telephony from January 2027 (i.e. if you want a phone, you have to have broadband anyway by then). 5. Many of the arguments in the report are not expected to be an issue - e..g no one is suggesting that consumers will pay extra for IP delivered TV. In fact many of those arguments are based on an interesting problem that the largest cost of TV is the TV licence fee, that can be avoided if you do not consumer linearly delivered services, which is actually what is happening (currently I understand TV licence payment is at 81% of households and falling). 6. There is also a fallacy here that DTT has better coverage than broadband, driven by using an invalid broadband speed figure as the required speed to be able to stream HD video. Current USO figures of 10Mbps is sufficient for HD video streaming today, and the figures used assume the consumer is going to be streaming 4K or multiple HD services. A 10Mbps streaming service can provide you with single stream access in HD to all services, not just one Multiplex which is what is defined by the DTT 99% coverage figure. 7. Current USO is 99.26% of the country. 8. This is a discussion of how much more does the UK want to pay to run a dedicated infrastructure for only linear (which will only be 11% of viewing across both IP and Broadcast), and 20% more is too much in cost and energy terms for this. There are more points, particularly about the somewhat unbelievably (made up) numbers and invalid assumptions. This is a report targeted at finding an answer the customer wanted rather than a real assessment, even though the answer achieved is not valid. Discuss.

For me, the semantics here say everything. First up, the word 'newsroom' is an anachronism. The term is legacy and the entity unscalable — and anything that can’t scale is in trouble. The use of the word 'versus' is also revealing. If the MSM retain this bunker mentality, there is only one winner. Clue: he builds electric cars on the side. To truly transform, the newsroom has to morph into a newsplane, which is decentralised and co-powered by citizen journalists from the bottom-up. The newsroom of the future is everyone and everywhere. Journalists work alongside citizen journalists and vice versa. That collaboration results in faster news, truly impartial news and more democratic and shareable news. To remain relevant, news publishers have to decentralise. If they don't, if they try to fight the platforms and remain centralised, they're going the same way as the dinosaurs. cc: Jukka Väänänen

Channel 4 in UK announcing strong growth numbers in viewing on their digital platform. Would be interesting to know what kind of revenue this contributes for Channel 4? I am assuming that the linear "sterling" is bit more still than the digital? But very nice to see that "TV-like" content creates strong growth on digital platforms. #tvbusiness #advertising #entertainment #broadcasting

In the latest episode of the Radical Moves Ltd Podcast, I spoke again about how streaming services such as YouTube are mimicking the road well trodden by audio services such as Spotify to offer a "leanback experience" with autoplay and suggested next clips. Unlike with physics, in technology adoption: sound typically moves faster than light. VOD-2-Live or VOD-to-Live or Virtual Channels - what has almost happened with FAST. It feels like something that has been discussed on the supplier side for a long time now. Back in 2018 at Vimond we had high fidelity UX designs, but unfortunately we couldn't get the buy-in to take it from the drawing board to prototype. The idea of creating personalised content playlists or channels is something I expect and hope we'll see one day, to combat information overload and analysis paralysis on the sofa. It's something I still speak often about with James Holding Magnus Svensson and Stein Erik Sørhaug - one day we'll get there! Well, that was some annoying news to wake up to when listening to the Podnews Weekly Review...Spotify is set to sunset Chartable 😢 This news doesn't matter if you're a Megaphone customer because two of the platforms most useful features - SmartLinks and SmartPromos - will be available natively within that podcast host. Both of these tools were incredibly handy. SmartLinks solved a massive problem in podcast promotion - the giant information air gap you were sucked into after someone clicked on a link that sent them to your show. Clicks don't mean much to a podcaster if no one listens but SmartLinks allowed you to track whether people listened after they clicked thanks to the prefix URL that was added to your RSS. Prior to this the best you could do was watch your analytics and try and work out if there were any discernible spikes in listening, which was totally pointless if you had an always on promotional strategy (which you should). SmartPromos were another really clever tool that allowed you to track whether placing a promo for your show in another show had any real impact on downloads. It's a pity to see both these tools of taken off the shelf for general use. If you want to continue tracking links, you can do so using the tech behind the Chartable platform but you'll only be able to find out whether those listens convert to downloads in Spotify. I get it. Spotify spent the money on the platform and they're not a charity and they are adding an incredible list of really great features to their products and app. They're a business, so it's a really smart move to provide features that encourage as many people as possible to spend their listening AND creating time within the one ecosystem. But it’s a bummer it’s now not available to everyone. If you're using another platform that has similar tracking capabilities for all listening apps, no matter where you host your show and it would be good for individual podcasters not just organisations, please let me know below. Good news or bad news - TV no longer the single main source of news In the #UK "#Television is no longer the single main source of news for UK adults, as Ofcom research shows online sites and apps are now as popular as TV news for the first time." Whether this is good or bad, it is undoubtably inevitable. The internet opened up the world of news and made other non-mainstream media sources available at the click of a button. That has huge positives. Alternative media has different takes, different focuses that traditional media, looks at details that mainstream television news doesn't highlight. Depending on the type of news, it can really enrich and compliment understanding of the world. However, the obvious negatives is that fake news floods the zone, people are ciphoned into their own bubbles of what is real and what is fake. People can tailor the news to their own biases and interest, and that is causing a schism in societies. All these changes underscore the importance of #publicservicemedia in the ever-changing media landscape. The importance of having impartial and fact-based media in a divided newscape is so important. Corporate media has business interests, and online independent media varies in quality enormously. It's important for PSBs to embrace this change and ensure that they are not just present or considered a TV-only news source, but be across all platforms. In the UK "Public service broadcasters (#PSBs) remain an important way to access news. BBC One remains the most popular individual news source, while news across all BBC platforms (TV, radio, news website, Sounds and iPlayer) still reaches 68% of all UK adults. ITV1 is the second most popular individual news source." "Online news sources – and social media platforms in particular – are rated much less favourably than traditional platforms such as TV and radio for accuracy, trust and impartiality....Audiences still consider ‘trusted and accurate UK news’ as the most important societal feature of public service media (PSM), with nearly half of respondents (49%) ranking it among the top three attributes...PSBs, on the whole, consistently deliver well in this area, with 63% of respondents rating PSB news as ‘trusted and accurate’." In summary, the moves to online news is inevitable. Some independent media is great, and a great benefit to that, but others are a danger to understanding of truth and facts. In the battle to establish truth and facts, the public service media, with the mission to inform, has to lead the way and reach audiences where they are. They require support from governments to continue to offer this vital service. "Have you seen this report? The Shared Commitments in a Blended Reality thing? Yeah, it’s ambitious, it’s pragmatic—it's got everything you want in a roadmap for the internet of the future. Human rights, data stewardship, sustainability—it’s like a buffet for societal values. They’re trying to balance innovation with ethics! You know, like saying, 'Let’s invent teleportation, but make sure everyone’s wearing their seatbelt.' But here’s the thing—they say the success of this hinges on implementation. Implementation! That’s like saying, 'This parachute works great... as long as you actually pull the cord.' Historically, these multistakeholder efforts have trouble keeping momentum. You’ve got the EU with their GDPR saying, 'Protect all the data!' and the US saying, 'Eh, just take the data, nobody’s looking.' It’s like trying to get a band to play the same song, but everyone’s in a different time zone. And inclusivity? Accessibility? The report nails it—they say the internet’s getting all immersive and spatial. Spatial! What does that even mean? It means that if we don’t invest in infrastructure for underserved regions, the digital divide is gonna turn into the Grand Canyon. You can’t have a 'blended reality' when half the world doesn’t even have Wi-Fi! What are they gonna blend it with? A flip phone? Oh, and sustainability? That’s the big one. Everyone’s talking about XR hardware, data centers, servers humming away 24/7—it’s like they’re building the internet on a treadmill powered by fossil fuels. They’re saying, 'Yeah, we’re advancing humanity, but at the same time, we’re melting the glaciers.' The industry has to work with environmental experts. 'Green technologies,' they say. You ever notice every tech company loves to say they’re going green? Meanwhile, their server farms are drinking electricity like it’s happy hour. So yeah, ambitious report, good ideas—but let’s see if they can pull it off. Because the future of the internet isn’t just about cool tech. It’s about making sure the real world doesn’t fall apart while we’re too busy putting on VR headsets!
