“The only constant in life is change” Heraclitus Last week at the CIPD Festival of Work “change” was a big topic of conversation. I also promised in last week’s post to share the Transformational Leadership Qualities that we teach in our THRIVE for Leaders Programme. Today I co-delivered a 3 hour Masterclass on Navigating Change with the Wonderful Becki Nazareth for a group of 40 Auditors for a global bank facing lots of change. CHANGE IS EVERYWHERE! Old “change management” philosophies are outdated because they rely on stability either side of that change. With global change in climate, economics, government, tech and more, change is constant (thanks Heraclitus 👆) This means that those old models often end in burnout. 📣📣We need to replace Change management with Change Mindset.📣📣 Leaders, by employing the Transformational Leadership Qualities below you can help your organisations and teams navigate change? 1. The Institute of Directors (IoD) recently posted about workplace stress and burnout, it's quite an interesting article, you might want to take a look. It's more commonplace than you might think and 'just 51% of participants agreed that their organisation addressed the potential impacts of stress and burnout'. I'm now offering Wellbeing 1st Responder training through Wellbeing With Cari. This is true neuroscience-based ability to increase your organisational health - quite amazing really. Think of it as a precursor to mental health first aid - reducing potential impact on organisational efficiency and productivity.

“Wellbeing perks don’t work”. So says Paul Devoy, CEO of Investors in People in this article from HR magazine (link in comments). This is something I’ve thought for a long time. I think it became really clear to me when the free counselling sessions I’d been ‘gifted’ by HR as a way to cope with a toxic work situation were coming to an end… My feelings had been validated by the counsellor in session one. After that, we mostly discussed Brexit. You see, no amount of counselling sessions were ever going to change the toxic leadership we were all experiencing. Or the increase in workload without explanation. Or the bullying tendencies of a colleague. You get the idea… As Paul Devoy says, ignoring the fundamentals that are causing the problems and offering yoga lunches instead, is only storing up trouble for the organisation in future. As well as eroding the trust and the wellbeing of employees. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping leaders develop the personal awareness and necessary skills to deal with the fundamentals. With confidence and direction. So they can take care of their own wellbeing, as well as their employees. How can you make your menopause staff network appeal to everyone? This is about being inclusive and getting out of the heteronormative conversation that menopause only impacts white women, aged 50+. This simply isn’t the case - menopause can and is experienced by a range of people, 80% of whom are employed! ➕ Menopause happens to younger people - menopausal symptoms can happen earlier than the average age of 51 due to cancer treatment, treatment for endometriosis, surgically due to hysterectomy, due to gender reassignment or due to POI which affects women as young as 30! ➕ Menopause affects people with diverse gender expressions and identities - those undergoing gender reassignment where hormone blocking drugs are used, same-sex couples where both partners might be experiencing menopause, intersex or non binary people will also experience menopause. So it doesn’t just affect women. ➕ Menopause affects people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds - in some cultures the word menopause doesn’t exist and this time is viewed more positively so the experience of symptoms may be different. For people of black, african and minority ethnicities their experiences can be very different to the heteronormative view as they may go into menopause later and it may not last as long. ➕ Menopause impacts neurodivergent people differently - research is still limited to help us to understand how the changes in our brains during menopause are impacted by neurodivergence. In all of these cases we need to be mindful that there is no one-size fits all approach to menopause, and our language is important. If you want your organisation to fully embrace the conversation about menopause and support a staff network, you need to be more diverse and inclusive in how you talk about menopause.
