If you've ever attended one of our Culturally Intelligent and Inclusive Leadership Programmes at Above Difference Limited, you’ve likely heard me say, "One of my favorite sayings is..." just before I introduce a quote from a thought leader who has profoundly shaped my approach to leadership. Influences like Maya Angelou, David Livermore, John Kotter, Simon Sinek, and Edgar Schein are just a few of the experts who have contributed to how I encourage participants to view leadership and human interaction through a more expansive lens. Yet, perhaps no one has influenced me more than John C. Maxwell—affectionately known as "Papa John" by those of us fortunate enough to be mentored by him and his team through Maxwell Leadership. With over 90 books on leadership and a global reputation as the foremost authority on the subject, Maxwell's insights have been a cornerstone of my leadership philosophy. While leadership as a whole fascinates me, my true passion lies in Culturally Intelligent & Inclusive Leadership. I often find myself evaluating traditional leadership theories through the lens of inclusivity, asking the critical question: "How do these theories equip leaders to lead all their people well?" As John Maxwell aptly says, "Everyone deserves to be well led," and at Above Difference, we believe that when leaders lead well, they lead all their people well. Inclusion is a leadership challenge. Last week, I had the privilege of attending the International Maxwell Conference, where I picked up a box of Wisdom Quotes by John. This inspired me to take on a new challenge: to explore each of these quotes within the context of Inclusive Leadership. Over the next 44 days, I’ll share a brief reflection on one quote each day, examining its relevance and applicability in fostering inclusivity in leadership. Those who know me are well aware that I’m a bit of a social media phobe, so this will be an interesting journey! 😂 But sometimes, it’s about feeling the fear and doing it anyway. Last week we hosted an info session for the launch of our Transformational Change Masterclass. The word "masterclass" certainly scared me at first when we decided to use it, it brought up all kinds of "who do you think you are" internal monologues. I realised others may also have a similar response when they hear about what we are doing. 👓 So here's a little re-frame (as much for myself as for others): 👩‍🎓 This is a masterclass in the beginner's mindset, to let go of what you think you know and fully be present with what is. 🛫 This course is a space to play with people who are on a lifelong journey of transformation within themselves and also practice that in their work or vocation. These practitioners see transformation as an ever present and evolving practice that happens in rapid cycles, or what we call "generative development". Aka - this means that the work is never done. 🦋 We are breaking some of the conditioning around transformation being a solo or hero/heroine's journey. We transform more effectively (and faster) in community. In this space, we'll practice being with people. So what is this course really about? It's about being in community and witnessing your own and other's transformation through the power of presence. 🎇 And when you experience this, the work of transformation becomes a way of being - with your clients, communities, and stakeholders. This is a masterclass of letting go of control of what you think you know, what you think you should know, and who you think you need to be. This is as much a masterclass for the faculty as it is the participants, to lead and be led by one another.
