Paywalled, but the headline is fairly self-explanatory; the expected flattening of used ICE value in response to supply and recognition of less desirability of older BEV technology. This is what the EV 'revolution' is all about, as older vehicles become established in the market we learn how to adapt to using them; as with mobile phones, they might not be the new-and-shiny, but can be perfectly functional. - How do manufacturers support these older models software, and does it matter; possibly increasingly so with the latest models and subscription features? - Does decreasing range really matter, and how is this reflected in the value? Although a used ICE can still travel as far as it did when new, they tend to travel less, but older EVs may restrict a subset of owners who do need access to this capability. - How does the availability of models affect the nuance in demand and retention - looking at the traditional, large-engined estate cars that are possibly making a come-back to replace SUVs? My biggest question is going to be whether the technology determines annual mileage, or will we see more homogonisation and nuance in how vehicles are used as the stock biases increasing towards electrified, and then electric?

Great to see an increase in more affordable Electric Vehicles for drivers The transition to a greener transport future requires two things: the availability of EVs that drivers want and are able to afford, and the availability of affordable and convenient charging. A surprisingly low-key confirmation of a major policy amendment, which should increase the overall proportion of BEV in the parc by ~10% by 2030 and demonstrate some confident commitment to the shift away from ICE. However, by continuing to permit sale of hybridised-ICE it will encourage a larger share of this complex technology with some very important operational nuances that must be recognised to inform calculation of GHG and local pollutants.

Two-thirds of the cars and vans operated by both public and private sector fleets in the UK could be switched to an electric vehicle (EV), a major study of driving data suggests.  Geotab’s ‘Taking Charge: On the Road to an EV Future’ report analysed data from 1.3 million vehicles across seven countries over 12 months. Geotab found that 66% of light-duty vehicles (cars and vans) in the UK are ready to go electric. If you missed the ‘Understanding how to transition to EVs’ event on 21 May in Cheshire, there were some really interesting takeaways, here are some quick highlights: TRANSITIONING TO AN EV FACTORY Dianne Miller   Ellesmere Port Plant Director   Stellantis The Stellantis plant at Ellesmere Port is transitioning to an EV factory as part of a £130 million investment. The site traditionally manufactured Vauxhall cars such as the Astra, but has now switched to building electric vans, and it’s the company’s first all-electric vehicle factory in the UK, and in the world. Batteries for the electric vans are assembled at the site, by highly trained employees in a new £27 million battery assembly shop. Stellantis has its own ship bringing parts to the factory, which docks just three miles away from the plant – and electric tugs are soon due to help the components get delivered all the way to the factory. This means that planes and 400 truck trailers are no longer needed to transport parts. With help from its own renewable energy generation, the factory – which is due to celebrate its 60-year anniversary on 12 June – is due to be carbon neutral by 2027. There are also plans for an ‘Electric Streets’ project. Dianne said that it’s disappointing that the end of sale date for new petrol and diesel cars and vans has been delayed from 2030 to 2035, but Stellantis will be moving ahead with its electrification plans for 2030 regardless. MOVING TO A NET ZERO ELECTRICITY NETWORK   Rachel Shorney   Strategic Optimisation Team Manager   SP Energy Networks Rachel Shorney explained how SP Energy Networks is investing in the network to support the UK’s move to net zero. The headline is that businesses should share their decarbonisation plans as early as possible to ensure that the SP Energy Networks can plan for and accommodate their energy requirements for the future. Significant projects can have long lead times, worsened by global events that are creating supply chain issues. To connect a new EV charging hub, a new transformer may be needed. Due to demand globally, with all countries moving towards net zero, and developments such as the war in Ukraine, the lead time to source and install a new transformer has risen from around two and a half years to five years, and is currently around six to seven years. Costs have also risen; a new primary substation is now likely to cost around £2-£3 million, and to take 2-3 years to build. Rachel suggested that the move to net zero offers wide-ranging career opportunities for anyone due to enter the jobs market in the coming years. ⚠️ Cost Myth ⚠️ 💡 Myth: EVs are too expensive. 🔍 Fact: The cost of EVs is decreasing and will eventually fall in line with the pricing of ICE vehicles, with the cheapest model avalaible in the UK now starting at £14,995. They also offer savings on running costs, maintenance, and taxes. Interesting context around the UK's public charging infrastructure in this article celebrating the growth in the US, where "a wave of new fast-charging stations" installed in Q3 is actually 607, similar to what we see here. Only consider the relativity: 1. The US has 3.5m electric cars on the road, the UK is not even half that 2. A 35% YoY increase compared to 41% in the UK 3. Alabama is listed as a beneficiary of this "recent charger blitz" with 15 new stations. For non-geographers, Alabama is slightly bigger than the whole of England It's great to read a positive, data-informed article 👏. This weeks Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief, Buses zooming to decarbonisation but trucks are lagging Today SMMT published its new heavy vehicle registration figures for quarter three with 2,367 new buses and another 10,839 HGVs hitting UK roads between July and September. It is a mixed picture for each, with one performing well and the other yet to pick up speed. Demand for new buses, coaches and minibuses was up a stonking 36.1% in Q3 compared with last year, with fleet renewal rising for an amazing year and half. There was growth in every segment and the strongest uptake was with new minibuses and single deckers, up 38.4% and 36.4% to 1,486 and 461 units respectively. Deliveries of new double deckers also rose, by a very respectable 28.4% to 420 units. Britain is blessed with a number of the world’s very best manufacturers in this sector, and with 14 different cutting-edge zero emission bus (ZEB) models from a wide range of brands now available to UK businesses, it is fantastic that demand for them rose by almost half (48.0%) to 484 units last quarter. The result? In the first nine months of the year, ZEBs made up a fifth (20.9%) of all fleet renewal, totalling 1,230 vehicles. But such an amount would not have been possible without government funding such as the Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) and Scottish Zero Emission Bus Challenge (ScotZEB) schemes. Many operators have tight margins which can be a big barrier for decarbonisation. Turning our attention SMMT’s new HGV registration figures, the Q3 market declined by 6.0% compared to a strong quarter last year, and following economic uncertainty during the first half of 2024 when operators would have placed new orders. It’s very positive therefore that overall uptake is still above pre-pandemic levels. We also have reasons to be optimistic about zero emission truck uptake because the UK has the second biggest market for them by volume in Europe. But it’s a concern that registrations almost halved in Q3, -47.1% below 2023 with a market share of 0.5%, down from 0.8% last year. Operators continue to face significant barriers to making the switch on a larger scale, such as a Plug-in Truck Grant which does not give access to every vehicle on the new HGV market, as well as an absence of public and shared hub chargepoints. Addressing these two issues would begin to make a difference. Overall for the new heavy vehicle markets, 2024 has been a highly competitive year and with Christmas and New Year on the horizon, manufacturers will be pulling out all the stops to get existing orders delivered and into the hands of operators. Looking further ahead, the Commercial Vehicle Show on 29 April-1 May will be a key opportunity for OEMs looking to showcase their latest products, and operators seeking fresh expertise on how to maximise the benefits of fleet renewal. This is a good initiative by Ford to simulate their both existing and new customer base to transition over to EVs, personally this just offsets a cost that would be incurred by installing a home charging option. This unfortunately doesn’t cover off approx 50% of the UK population or similarly globally that live in apartments, terraced or in locations where home charging isn’t possible. The fact that the UK bylaws state that no trailing cables including those such as home chargers on a public pathway cannot be used, shows that this initiative by Ford will only be valuable to a potential minority of Ford customers rather than the majority of EV owners. Those that rely on high cost public chargers know the impartiality in costs compared to ICE vehicles at this time. We need now more than ever for “disruptive” EV technologies or advantages that we know that is being extensively worked upon to be coming to the market. It’s like every new technology, it will continue to rapidly evolve and develop to provide that ultimate solution that we all want and desire. Waiting for new EV technologies is something that many are unfortunately waiting for and this is one of the contributing factors of high depreciation of EV vehicles today, no complete solution is currently available today!

📣🚚 Boost to uptake of zero emission vans urgently needed! The coalition behind the Zero Emission Van Plan, including ourselves, has written to the new Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh MP to urge her to take action to get electric van usage on track. The letter to the Transport Secretary from the coalition has been undersigned by the UK’s leading van manufacturer, Stellantis, and FN200 Fleet News, which represents the nation’s 200 largest fleet operators.
