FA Cup rant 2/2 Having highlighted how the finance can be a lifeline to some clubs, that is secondary to the chance of holding one of the big clubs and then getting a second crack, be it home or away. The announcement, as if it's doing the EFL a favour, that the FA Cup Final will be on the penultimate weekend of the season with no EPL games on that day is also a nonsense. What happens if a Championship club gets to the final as nearly happened today? Put all the Championship games back a week or tuck the Cup Final away on a Thursday night and ignore it? How, in the words of Kevin Keegan, I would "love it" if next season two Championship clubs reach the final. "OK lads, St George's Park, pitch six and we'll kick off in five minutes. No-one's interested as it's not Premier League clubs." Maybe the answer is for the EPL to become a closed shop and staging matches all around the world. I believe the so-called "39th game remains on some people's agenda - maybe the Community Shield or perhaps the FA Cup Final. Veteran (sorry) journalists Brian Glanville and Rob Shepherd have renamed the Premier League the "Greed is Good League" and the "Greed is God League" respectively. The FA and Premier League have been uncomfortable bedfellows but someone from the FA needs to have a wird to remind them who runs the game in the game in this country. Are they afraid to? UCFB has dual campuses, Manchester and Wembley, with most undergraduate courses run at both sites, with programmes and assignments aligned. There are some differences for practical purposes. Guy McCrea and I teach on Sports Commentary (3rd yr) and Audio Storytelling (2nd yr) modules which are totally aligned. Different days of the week so we can have the same live guests on Teams or in person, who bring so much extra value to the lectures. Similar structure to sessions with great co-operation and sharing of materials. Two heads are better than one and the students certainly get the benefit. Most of the planning is done with regular Teams calls, usually at least once a week. This week we met for the first time - a very productive (non-alcoholic) lunch in London. Recommend Mildreds on Pentonville Road if you like vegan food (or just fancy trying it), but why no apostrophe?🤔

Over the past 18 months or more, I have had the opportunity to work closely with new football clubs, sales teams, and management setups. Out of six projects I was involved in, only one achieved success a result that is considered relatively decent within the industry. The purpose of this post is not to discuss or promote my projects but to share insights into why some projects, despite having great potential, fail to succeed. Here are a few key observations: 1. Insufficient research by owners/investors. 2. Lack of trust from owners/investors. 3. Prioritizing familiarity over competence when selecting collaborators. 4. Either micro-managing due to zero trust or complete delegation without accountability, until it’s too late. 5. Settling for the status quo when transformative change is necessary. 6. Failing to invest in the right areas. 7. Distrust in teams responsible for generating revenue streams. 8. Limited marketing knowledge or skepticism about its value. Of course, there are countless other reasons that vary by situation, but these are the ones that stand out based on my experience. The takeaway here is that owning or investing in a football club or any business is far more complex than it may seem. Every decision, big or small, plays a critical role in determining the outcome of a project. If you have similar or different experiences, please do share.

**Why Sports Governing Bodies Should Hire Our Media Graduates** The post below this one is by Cameron Hitt. Cam is a student on our Sport Broadcast MSc cohort this year, he has a month left before he finishes his degree, but he's already been snapped up by Welsh Boxing as their new Content and Comms Officer. He was one of our stand-out students in the 23/24 group, a winner of our "Best Broadcast All-Rounder" award, and someone as comfortable producing a live programme as he is presenting it, so it's not surprising he's gone straight into full-time employment. When it comes to graduate employability Cardiff Metropolitan University leads the way in Wales and we're increasingly seeing our grads jump into roles within media teams at sports governing bodies and pro sports organisations. These positions are a perfect fit for students who bring an "all-court" skill-set to the party, can shoot, edit, script and voice a news package, produce video podcasts, make stylised multi-cam features, edit highlights and use their Adobe skills for digital content creation and social media management across all platforms. What Cameron offers on top of all that is an instinct for a good story and an aptitude for quality storytelling. Cam's work placement this year was with Welsh Cycling, recently rebranded as Beicio Cymru, another exciting and progressive Welsh sports governing body. When Cam told me last year he was doing his final project documentary on an athlete from Carmarthen called Emma Finucane I had to google the name to see who she was!. 9 months on and she's one of Wales' greatest ever Olympians. Cameron's film about Emma will be released soon. So, in his new role he'll be able to utilise all his film-making talents into telling all the amazing stories to be found in Welsh boxing. I guess my point with this post is... if you are a small or medium sized sports governing body looking to grow your profile, raise exposure for your sport, build your brand, shout a bit louder about your events...then we probably have a graduate who can help tell your story. So give me a shout if that's what you need. It's a crowded market place post-Olympics, kids have got so much choice in terms of what sport to take up, what sport to watch on the weekends, and if you are trying to attract Gen Z to your product, then you need some Gen Z creative storytellers on your team. And he’s not the first of our grads to find work in the media dept of an NGB organisation or pro team: Ethan Harris is Content Lead at the FAW, Abigail Godsall is with Welsh Gymnastics , Steffan Alun Leonard has been on a 1 year internship w/ Team Wales, several of our students were interns w/ WRU this year, as well as Dafydd Jones at Cardiff Rugby, Bhavya D. at Glamorgan Cricket, Matthew Leon at Bath Rugby, Richard Early at Aberdeen Football Club & Greg Caine at Liverpool Football Club, all in full time staff positions.

I am always surprised by the amounts businesses pay for marketing and advertising... and sponsorship or advertising with a football club has never been a consideration! Even a club like ours, we can deliver an audience in the millions for what is on paper a very small investment! Sport is often either not thought about when choosing a method or too expensive, as it is only the the "big" clubs who can deliver the audience required! I've been a bit quiet lately working on some long-term projects, but here's something I'll be writing about over the coming months. It can be tricky to write a range of content about one thing without repeating yourself, so we (I'm not the mastermind behind the entire campaign!) have been exploring different angles of this course that people might want to know more about. This article is mostly just an introduction and overview, but I also helped to create a webpage explaining the concept of micro-credentials and am now working on a piece that explains more about how the certificate sits in comparison to other qualifications.
