Sonic logos. I don’t mean the personal branding of a speedy blue hedgehog. I’m talking about audio logos. A short, distinctive sound or melody that represents a brand and helps people recognise it quickly. Instagram released one recently that plays at the end of downloaded reels. It’s not gone down well on the whole. An article about it on Creative Bloq (https://lnkd.in/ePz-guFk) describes it as “lacking character, feels flat and doesn’t have a strong link to the brand.” Ouch! The article contrasts it with a much more successful sonic logo from Cadbury in 2022: sonic logo from Cadbury in 2022 (https://lnkd.in/eHU3WyYv) There are famous sonic logos going all the way back to the 1929 NBC chimes, which is considered to be the first, and was initially played live in the studio during radio broadcasts, giving it a distinctive association in the minds of listeners. For me, the one most engrained in my brain is the Intel Inside chime from the 90s PC adverts. Returning to the Creative Bloq article, it concludes by saying: “Great sonic logos communicate the spirit of a brand in just a few seconds.” It’s a fun exercise to think about what your brand’s sonic logo would sound like. And more broadly, focusing on the ‘spirit of a brand’ is useful. It helps us concisely define and articulate the essence of a brand, and maybe opens up a different way to think about it. It might be time for a spring clean 🧹 I know this week you'll have gone to your wardrobe to pull out your summer clothes again... maybe you've tried them on and suddenly they just don't feel very... you... anymore? A little tight in place, the colours irritate you, the cut of the fabric doesn't suit you anymore... The same can happen with your branding. Maybe you whipped it up on canva 3 years ago when you were just starting and now the style doesn't match the business that you're running now. This is what happened with Elegance by Asma. During the initial meetings for the brand refresh, we dove into what exactly the client wanted to achieve with the redesign, where they wanted to go as a company. It was in this chat that the one thing that really called to me was how amazing Asma (the company owner and designer) was, not to mention how beautifully crafted her work was as well as her attention to detail. This was where I drew most inspiration from for the redesign - the E carefully crafted to match the uniformity of her stitching and the stripped back minimalism to let the dresses take centre-stage. The scope of the project included: 1) Full logo and brand redesign 2) High-end photography 3) A fully-functioning e-commerce site This full on redesign wouldn't have come to light without the invaluable help of Javier Trigo, the amazing photography by Claire Ballard - Photographer (special mention to make-up artist Shair Bashir) and the beautiful site by Alka Bagga. another week, another 'what if' Olly has this week decided he's gonna put his tentacles to good use and help you move, so this week he's become a removals business. we've dropped the pink as i don't think that really fits with this industry. Olly has also been swapped for a less in ye face octopus but also one that captures the moving & removals. The font has also changed to fit why do i do this? a) showing of my skills ;) b) showing how when you understand the industry and the audience, these have an impact on your design decisions to create a brand that appeals to the right people. Now this is the ✨absolute✨ worst thing I’ve made in my life… BUT it makes my point Just because a design is on-brand 👉 Doesn’t mean it’s a good design FOR your brand Creative Tuesday ✍🏻 has taken a painful (for me) turn this week Exhibit A ✅ The colours are right ✅ The fonts used are correct ✅ The submark pattern is there ✅ The illustrations have been added So what’s wrong with it? I’m glad you asked 😏 TEXT ❌ No consistency with spacing or tracking between letters ❌ Letters aren’t bottom aligned together (some are floating up) COLOURS ❌ Gradient is mucky Not all colours that match well, will blend well ❌ Low contrast is making the text illegible e.g., pale yellow over pale mint ❌ No sense to spot colouring of letters Needs to be strategic, logical & consistent VISUALS ❌ Overlap too much They’re in the way of the design, rather than accenting it ❌ The pattern is too opaque, which makes the text more difficult to read FORMATTING ❌ No logical alignment ❌ Object too close to, or overlapping the edge ❌ Randomised sizing I could probably write more, but you should get the idea Now if this was the quality of someone’s content to sell their services… would you trust them? Would you hand over your money? I don’t generally post too much on LinkedIn and it’s probably been close to 5 months since I’ve done so. So why now? Well it’s been just over 5 months since I left my job at Tabcorp. As most of you know I decided it was time to find a better work life balance. I was burnt out and needed to make some changes. So how’s it all going? It’s been a ride. As you all know the job markets a nightmare so I took some time out and considered my options. In the end I backed myself and decided to spin up an offering in market called www.thirdmirror.com.au A small collective of designers, strategists and engineers who focus on helping businesses de-risk new opportunities, reimagine existing propositions and help fix the gaps in the more traditional marketing funnels to nudge the metrics that matter in the right direction. It’s not been an easy ride. Not much work came in at first and I doubted the decision to leave my gig many times over. As for work life balance, can’t say I nailed that either. It’s been a constant struggle to find time to network, write proposals, and actually get the small amount of work done that was starting to dribble in whilst trying to realign my health and wellbeing and spend time with family and friends. 5 months later things are on the up which is great considering we’re coming into the end of the year. I’ve been collaborating with some amazing people, I’ve built a new network of connections and for the first time in a while I can breath, there’s a nice pipeline of work coming through. Everything from brand strategy, through to assisting a start up and a scale up or two in their product journey. I’ve been able to help some other agencies on a few projects and I’ve even started to work with some old colleagues from my Accenture Song days, rapidly shaping up some tech feasibility PoCs. The best part of the ride so far has been working with the people I choose to work with on my own terms, some of whom I’ve known for over 25 years. I’ve also made a handful of new friends who have supported me and are on their own unique journey in a market that’s challenging but at the same time filled with opportunities. There are a few big announcements on the horizon too. Watch this space. As my old CCO used to say.. “what’s the so what?” It’s simple, the Brutal Truth is, back yourself and make the decisions you know you need to make for yourself. It’ll take time, it won’t be easy but it’ll be worth it. Excited to see what the future will hold. I’m sure they’ll be many more ups and downs but that’s to be expected.
