🚨New research A first-of-its-kind analysis, led by the Green Finance Institute, with technical support from nature economists at UNEP-WCMC and partners, quantifies the impact of nature degradation, both domestically and globally, to the UK economy and financial sector. 🌎🌿📊 The report titled “Assessing the Materiality of Nature-Related Financial Risks for the UK” ➡️ analyses the impact of the depletion of natural ecosystems to the UK economy by assessing the nature-related dependencies. UNEP-WCMC researchers used the ENCORE tool to quantify how exposed financial institutions are to nature-related risks; revealing that 52% of the UK banks and insurers’ financial assets are at least moderately dependent on ecosystem services directly. Additionally, the team also investigated the geographic distribution of the wider nature assets that the UK banks and insurers depend upon and the risks faced by the loss of these ecosystem services. In more good news for nature finance, the Green Climate Fund recently announced a new policy that “… permanently integrates REDD+ results-based payments into GCF’s regular project activity cycle. This will significantly enhance the predictability of REDD+ financing, providing a powerful incentive for developing countries to embark on REDD+ and reduce their emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.” More of this please! Making forests worth more alive than logged is a central part of addressing climate change and protecting water, habitat and biodiversity. Pricing carbon and measuring and rewarding governments and private land owners for protecting and restoring the “lungs of the planet” is good policy all of the way around. #huntthegoodstuff

In this context, WWF has launched its introductory guide on deforestation and conversion for central banks, financial regulators, and supervisors & how these players can mitigate their contribution to deforestation. 📘 Our recent publication “Making Deforestation Due Diligence Work in Practice – A Practical Methodology & Implementation Guidance for Financial Institutions” supports this initiative. TNFD Releases Draft Guidance on Nature Transition Planning at COP16 The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) published a discussion paper offering draft guidance for corporates and financial institutions on developing and disclosing nature transition plans. This guidance aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which aims to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 and restore ecosystems by 2050. Around the world, people are working towards change, and this is a powerful example of a global effort to protect our natural ecosystems. 🤯 Almost half of all nature impacts come from just 100 companies 📃 The Finance For Biodiversity Foundation released a report last week titled: "Assessment of the biodiversity impacts and dependencies of globally listed companies" 📉 The findings are intended primarily to help investors see where they have big risks in their portfolios 🥓 Perhaps unsurprisingly the food sector has the biggest impacts AND dependencies. 🐄 Driven through, primarily, land use change Reporting frameworks such as TNFD will help get more into the details but this report gives some good broad indicators of where we should be concentrating our efforts right now
