In more good news for nature finance, the Green Climate Fund recently announced a new policy that “… permanently integrates REDD+ results-based payments into GCF’s regular project activity cycle. This will significantly enhance the predictability of REDD+ financing, providing a powerful incentive for developing countries to embark on REDD+ and reduce their emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.” More of this please! Making forests worth more alive than logged is a central part of addressing climate change and protecting water, habitat and biodiversity. Pricing carbon and measuring and rewarding governments and private land owners for protecting and restoring the “lungs of the planet” is good policy all of the way around. #huntthegoodstuff

The world cannot tackle the climate crisis without meaningful support for Indigenous Peoples. For generations, we’ve safeguarded high forest, low deforestation (HFLD) regions – some of the planet’s most critical carbon sinks and biodiverse ecosystems. Yet, despite countless promises, the funding needed to sustain these efforts rarely reaches our communities. Empty commitments are no longer enough. HFLD credits offer a transformative opportunity. Built on traditional knowledge, science, and sustainable development, they represent a model that protects pristine ecosystems, restores damaged areas, and empowers Indigenous economies. Our forests stand at a crossroads. With the right financing, we can continue as nature’s stewards, passing on our traditional knowledge to protect critical ecosystems. Without it, the world risks losing some of its last untouched forests. The @Integrity Council for the Voluntary Market now has an opportunity to act. Approving HFLD credits in its upcoming CCP assessment will ensure Indigenous communities aren’t cut off from the critical funding we need to safeguard our forests and sustain our futures. https://lnkd.in/eZspA_ex #HFLD #VCM #ClimateFinance #IndigenousRights

An insightful five-part series by Mongabay shedding light on the forest carbon trade—a subject that faced heightened scrutiny and criticism in 2023. Key highlights include: 1️⃣ The need to consult and include Indigenous and local communities in decision-making around forest carbon projects 2️⃣ Examining the efforts of governance bodies to elevate standards, fostering a 'rush to quality' within the voluntary carbon market With the unprecedented demand for carbon credits in Southeast Asia (SEA), the urgency is to channel climate finance towards Nature-based Solutions (NbS) projects. These projects not only yield climate benefits but also contribute to protecting biodiversity and enhancing community well-being. Supporting local frontline organisations across the region to accelerate the development of NbS for Climate projects is a key trust of the SCeNe Coalition. Collectively, we need to speed up and scale up actions. 🌱 📰 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gydc4A5h #SCeNeCoalition #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAction #Sustainability

While funding for nature has increased in recent years, there is still a significant funding gap. 💵 There have been a number of reports released recently that analyse the state of finance to nature. 🌳 Nature4Climate has summarised the reports findings and highlighted that nature is still only receiving a third (37%) of the funding that is needed by 2030 to achieve global climate and biodiversity goals. 🎯 Read the blog 👉 https://lnkd.in/enmNC6eY The practice of insetting can support your organisation in achieving its climate and nature commitments. When development banks claim they are climate financiers, we should be skeptical. When faced with complaints alleging environmental and human rights harms stemming from their own investments, development banks largely fail to act. Of the 1,895 closed cases to banks' accountability mechanisms, banks themselves only document having attempted any remediation in 8% of them. Unless development banks commit to learning from–and remediating–past mistakes, they cannot be the solution to the climate and biodiversity crisis moving forward. See more analysis from Accountability Counsel in the below article.
Accountability Counsel will be at the #COP16 biodiversity conference this month and expects to hear a lot about accelerating capital for biodiversity protection and too little about how to make sure that financing is accountable to people and the planet. Any investor claiming to engage in climate finance needs to have an accountability channel in place to hear from local communities--who are experts on their local environments--and must redress the issues raised. Without accountability, climate finance will continue to harm frontline communities and local environments in the name of saving the planet generally, which is a tradeoff we refuse to accept. 🌍 This new report underscores a crucial aspect of climate action and forest protection: the implementation of benefit-sharing plans for jurisdictional REDD+ (JREDD) program. These plans are essential for ensuring that the value generated from forest conservation is equitably shared, especially with the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) who are the frontline guardians of the world's forests. At Emergent and the LEAF Coalition, we recognize that supporting IPLC groups is not just a moral imperative—it’s vital for the success of our mission. These communities possess invaluable knowledge and stewardship practices that can significantly enhance our efforts in forest preservation and sustainable land management. By prioritizing benefit-sharing mechanisms, we can empower IPLCs, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their critical role in safeguarding biodiversity and mitigating climate change. This collaborative approach is key to creating lasting impact and fostering resilience in the face of environmental challenges. Let’s continue to advocate for inclusive strategies that honor and support the rights of IPLCs as we work towards a sustainable future. Together, we can drive meaningful change! Recognizing the invaluable role of forests in the fight against climate change, countries and the international community have established a framework known as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, and the role of conservation, sustainable forest management, and the enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+). This framework aims to encourage countries to reduce deforestation and degradation by offering financial rewards or results-based payments (RBPs) for verified emission reductions, at the same time promoting sustainable development. While the existence of various international RBPs and carbon market schemes valuing emission reductions (ERs) presents multiple opportunities for countries participating in REDD+, there is a critical need to clarify ERs rights and determine who benefits from REDD+ results. We need a new approach. The systems in place are incompatible with the type of future we not only want, but deserve. 🌳 New York is the largest city in the US and its financial sector. Big names in finance must use their voices and resources at #ClimateWeekNYC to back new regulation like the #FORESTAct that will stop deforestation and help end the financing of forest loss. 🚫The US still lacks meaningful legislation on protecting forests globally, and lacks any preventative measures to make sure the finance originating here doesn’t cause more biomes to disappear. Even while holding this tension, we're hoping #NYCW can ultimately be a positive step forward on the road to #COP30, next year in Brazil. 🇧🇷 And in the meantime, remember you are part of nature too. 🌻 - Ashley Thomson, Senior Policy Advisor on Forests at Global Witness #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalJustice #NYCClimateWeek #Deforestation
