This consensus-driven report draws on the collective knowledge of over 50 high-level Commissioners from the  Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, including UN leaders, industry CEOs, and distinguished figures from government, civil society, and academia. In Q2 2024, global fixed broadband connections reached 1.46 billion, following a quarterly growth of 0.95%.  We recorded a decline in fixed broadband subscriptions in 18 countries[1], down from 23 in Q1 2024. Some of these markets have high mobile subscriber penetration, others are experiencing economic headwinds or are already highly saturated markets, for example Hong Kong, Switzerland, Monaco. Mind the Gap....... The monetization gap is real, has existed for years and is arguably the main reason why telcos are on a path to commoditization. Continued over investment in new technology areas at the expense of seeking the maximum return from those investments. But something has changed. The plateauing of and in some cases the decline in mobile traffic levels creates an opportunity for a strategic re-think, a re-balancing of investment focus away from high capital intensity towards R&D, with much greater weight placed on the services consumers / businesses require and the network needed to deliver that. A really significant issue here but a tough nut to crack; building more equality into the #telecoms industry. The roots of it are manifold and the answers have to be as well, but the benefits of a diversified set of ideas and perspectives has to be welcome.
