The NSO Skills Delivery Group is up and running! Our first meeting took place at Cammell Laird and we had the opportunity to see first hand some of the amazing work there including delivery of skills and training on site. Our next meeting is on the 31st July and I would really like to hear from my LinkedIn connections about their current and future skills needs. For example, * What are the biggest recruitment and training issues as business you face now? *We talk a lot about skills gaps but what are those skills gaps now? Are they trade specific (for example welding / composites etc) or are they soft skills / power skills? *Most important of all, what do believe are your future skills and training needs, especially with the move to decarbonisation? Or are the skills going to be unchanged from now? I'll come onto the ideas and opportunities in another post but any ideas about how we attract the workforce of the future to consider our amazing maritime sector as a career choice are always welcome!

Rethinking Supply Chain Strategies for UK North Sea Floating Wind Farms – It’s time to Face the Reality of our Situation As the UK moves forward in its commitment to renewable energy, floating offshore wind presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities, especially in the North Sea. A critical hurdle here is the supply chain and infrastructure limitations. There has been so much focus on doing everything here in the UK. However currently, our infrastructure is not fully equipped to handle the large-scale demands of floating offshore wind projects. The simple practical reality of the situation is that the infrastructure just does not exist for us to do it all ourselves and the development of our existing offshore wind industry (Fixed bottom) should surely have highlighted this fact by now. An Alternative Strategy The clock is already ticking yet there are still many decisions seemingly not yet taken. Is now the time (if we haven’t already) to consider alternative strategies? What if we manufacture overseas, where facilities might already support such demands? We could then focus on developing our ports and installation capabilities here in the UK. This approach not only speeds up the initial manufacturing process but also bolsters our local economy by focusing on assembly and operational maintenance, creating sustainable job opportunities. Benefits: Speed and Efficiency: Leveraging existing global manufacturing capacities could circumvent the bottlenecks of building new facilities from scratch. Economic Growth: By focusing on assembly and installation, we invest in our local infrastructure, enhancing our ports and increasing employment in high-skill areas. Innovation and Leadership: Establishing the UK as a hub for the assembly and maintenance of floating wind farms positions us as a leader in offshore renewable energy. A great event earlier this week in London hosted by Caroline Hillier and the Moravia Yachting team. I was asked what's happening with vessel ownership types and chartering? “We provide solutions to allow our owners to do more. So we have registration types that will allow our owners to carry more persons on board. "Dual Use", which essentially allows the vessel to be privately registered, but still undertake up to 84 days charter, and we're seeing a huge spike in this. Our fleet is growing about 15% a year, but our Dual Use (Yacht Engaged in Trade) are growing between 20 and 25% a year. So we are seeing that as a huge growth area. The regions in which vessels can operate these are also spreading further and further east in the Mediterranean and other parts of the world becoming more and more acceptable. So we are really trying to give the owner his cake. The ripple effects of using "off-spec" fuel. Recent instances of "out of spec" fuel being taken on across several European ports, have sparked a discussion about the resulting consequences. In my experience, below are some of the issues that could be faced if the vessel had already sailed, as test results for the fuel often come back a few days after bunkering. - With the ship unable to turn back, the engineers might attempt to use the subpar fuel, leading to increased maintenance and potentially damage to the engine. - If the fuel remains unusable, the owner is stuck with the poor-quality fuel on board and faces the challenge of offloading it, which isn't always easy. - The vessel will likely need to bunker again to obtain additional fuel to complete the voyage. However, carrying the poor fuel will decrease the tank capacity or the vessel could be unable to take on more fuel without exceeding load line limits. - If the vessel is on a Time Charter, any deviation to remove the bunkers will result in off-hire periods and a loss of earnings. These are just a few of the consequences I can think of, and I hope this highlights the potential issues with poor-quality bunkers for those who may be unaware or new to the industry What other problems have you encountered with "off-spec" bunkers?

The contract for CalMac to run ferries on Scotland's west coast has been extended by a year. It comes as ministers are considering a direct award to the Scottish government-owned operator without a competitive tendering process. A direct award is Transport Scotland's preferred option, rather than accepting bids from rival firms. The contract had been due to expire on 30 September, but it said an extra year would allow further "due diligence" work to take place. The move comes after a long period of problems on the CalMac network. The firm has struggled to maintain services with an ageing and increasingly unreliable fleet which it leases from another government-owned agency CMAL. There have been delays to repairs to the main Arran ferry, cancellation of services to South Uist and islanders on Mull have also faced frequent disruption. This cost can be a barrier, especially for smaller companies or when retrofitting older vessels. 2. Limited LNG Infrastructure: The global LNG refueling network is still developing, presenting logistical challenges in regions with limited LNG bunkering facilities. This restricts dual-fuel engines benefits, making it difficult to switch to LNG consistently on all routes. 3. Training and Operational Complexity: Managing these systems requires trained crews, which adds to operational costs. Handling LNG’s cryogenic properties safely demands specific expertise, adding risk if not adequately managed. 4. Higher Maintenance Costs: Dual-fuel engines often face increased wear due to varying combustion properties, leading to higher maintenance costs over time. 5. Methane Slip: Using LNG can result in unburned methane, a potent greenhouse gas, escaping known as "methane slip." This can offset some emissions benefits, limiting LNG's environmental advantage. Nearly £1m allocated to boost UK coastal economies The UK #government is investing nearly £1m to support nine #maritime clusters across the country. The government says this funding aims to enhance local #economies, foster #skills development and connect businesses with the maritime sector. It forms part of a broader #strategy to stimulate regional economic growth by addressing barriers to opportunity and driving innovation in #coastalcommunities. The nine maritime clusters receiving funding are: Tees Maritime Cluster (£117,000) Humber Marine & Renewables (£85,000) Short Straits Maritime Cluster (£85,000) Cornwall Marine Network (£124,100) Mersey Maritime (£100,000) Northern Ireland Maritime & Offshore (£100,000) Scottish Maritime Cluster (£85,000) Maritime UK South-West (£85,000) Maritime UK Solent (£85,000) The total funding, £866,100, will be distributed among the clusters, with Maritime UK receiving an additional £135,000 to administer the grants on behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom. Looking at the damage sustained to the Wind of Hope I find it hard to believe that the MCA and classification society would let the vessel depart from Grimsby for repairs when there are local shipyards able to carry out such. The MCA state “As part of its commitment to enhancing maritime safety, the MCA conduct rigourous inspections to ensure that vessels comply with international safety standards. These measures are crucial for preventing potential accidents and environmental hazards, thus maintaining the integrity of marine operations within UK waters “. How can this vessel be currently halfway across the north sea without even having temporary repairs carried out? Another prime example of how British companies are losing out on work within the UK offshore wind industry, totally unfair and unjustified.

The creating a transparent framework that makes clear what competencies people need to have and what is expected from them.
