Great article by Kelli Armstrong writing for the Herald Sun. Some good and bad things about the Qantas wellness zone on long-haul flights (because OF COURSE, the jet lag guy has some thoughts!): GOOD — use of lighting. Light at the high end of the spectrum (blues and greens) wake you up, while low end of the spectrum (reds and oranges) can facilitate sleep. GOOD — Snacks! Who doesn't like snacks? And snacks can help you regulate your circadian rhythm. Less important *what* you eat, more important *when* you eat — eat only when you're hungry. BAD — capacity of eight people. 💡 Why go mega? Why not smaller & more connected in cruising? Port communities might be more hospitable, the negative impacts less & a better experience for the Pax. My recent article for the Conversation addressing the "sunsetting" of P&O Australia cruises. This brand has a history here- including in migration to Australia. "This mass tourism model can deliver relatively cheap holidays for passengers. But it often also sacrifices well-loved smaller cruise operations that are more connected to local histories and cultures. There is also the tyranny of distance for Australia, and increasing geopolitical risks affecting cruising. The Australasian region faces stiff competition as a cruise destination from alternatives such as the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, which are close to large markets. Virgin Voyages said its cancellation of the 2024–25 sailing schedule was due to major safety concerns in the Red Sea".

NEW 57M DYNARIG SAILING CATAMARAN FOR Dykstra Naval Architects ASC57: 57m Adventure Sailing Catamaran Echo Yachts has commenced construction of the ASC57, at their superyacht building facility in the Australian Marine Complex. This groundbreaking project brings together industry leaders from across the globe. In partnership with Dutch sailing yacht designers Dykstra Naval Architects and Australia's aluminium multihull experts One2three Naval Architects, the team will deliver the world's largest sailing catamaran to date. Drawing inspiration from Echo Yachts' 2023 new build motor yacht M/Y Charley 2, the ASC57 sailing yacht will feature similar luxury accommodation, a vast array of water toys, and helicopter landing capabilities. However, this super yacht introduces a twin-Dynarig sail system by Southern Spars, paired with Dykstra's sleek and refined sailing yacht aesthetics. As a result of the addition of sail power, a regenerative power system will be installed, utilising twin shaft generators and a battery storage system to allow for silent running under sail. With its hydrodynamic efficient aluminium hulls, full sail-powered propulsion, power regeneration and deployment options, the ASC57 offers significant eco-friendly performance advantages and greener modes of operation compared to traditional motor yachts. An extremely efficient aluminium hull form is complemented by twin Dynarigs providing a total sail area of some 1660 m2 for eco-efficient long range cruising. Weight reduction, simplicity and ease of operation will further characterize this project. Dykstra Naval Architects are providing the yacht's overall exterior styling, layout and naval architecture. Detailed naval architecture and structural design are being performed by Australian firm One2Three Naval Architects.

Coastal Trading in Australia is due for a review and the advocacy by the big end of town is on in earnest as CLIA and some of the foreign cruise lines start their campaign using the unfortunate situation of the P&O closure as their trojan horse. Whilst very unfortunate for us to lose a great Australian brand, it is common for foreign multinationals to consolidate to maximise their profits. The recent departure of several lines has less to do with the operating costs or regulatory environment around Australia's ports than it has to do with there simply being an oversupply of cruise inventory for a smallish market. Too many came all at once to cash in post Covid. All Australian businesses are faced with competition and also with the rising cost of operations. Yet the foreign multinationals are crying poor and claiming they should get exemptions and assistance and special attention. If they don't get it, they will no longer have the profits they have become so used to. But look a little deeper and you will find that foreign cruise lines in the smaller luxury space are reaping the benefits of current lax government policy to the disadvantage of some of Australia's flagged ships and marine jobs. These are pioneering companies with decades of history and a legacy of skilling Australia and creating opportunity for remote regional communities. Foreign lines can currently go head-to-head with local lines whilst paying much lower wages and minimal tax. It is essential that this area of the Act be updated by the government. It is time to end the unfair advantage and keep a vibrant marine industry in Australia. Importantly - Australian operators DO NOT seek to impact the ability of large cruise ships over 300 passengers or 30,000 tonnes to operate as they currently do. An investigation by Cruise Passenger into the effects of the shock announcement of P&O Australia’s merger with Carnival Cruises shows the country’s cruise ship capacity could be slashed by as much as 30% by 2026. Thousands of suites and cabins will be cut from the market in the next 24 months, probably leading to job losses at ports and among tourism operators. As well, price rises of up to 30% on homeported cruises are almost inevitable. Ports like Melbourne, part Chinese owned and which tried to raise its berthing charges by a 15% last year, as well as Adelaide will be big losers as cruise lines pull out of Australia, a move that will hit regional tourism. New Zealand too will find its economy hit.

HOLD UP: Delays have hit the launch of a new ferry between Australia and Tasmania. The Spirit of Tasmania IV, a newly-built vessel for the crossing between Geelong in Australia and Devonport in Tasmania, was delivered in September following construction at Rauma Marine in Finland. But it will be transferred to Leith in Scotland and potentially not reach the southern hemisphere for at least two years, according to The Maritime Executive. Its says that layup is caused by a delay in the construction of a dock in Devonport, Australia, which won't be ready until 2026-7. Tasmania's government has discussed the possibility of leasing the vessel to a third party for two years, putting the ship in operation and earning revenue until the dock is ready. According to Maritime Executive, her sister ship Spirit of Tasmania V was launched in July and is still in outfitting. ABC News in Australia has explored possibility of other ports being used in Tasmania rather than both of the new ships being being used elsewhere. When both ships finally enter service, they will replace the Spirit of Tasmania I and II. Ports really are the engine room of a country’s economy. Your product can be gold (literally), but if you can’t get it on a ship, out to sea, and ultimately to where your customers are based, then it might not be worth its weight. During COVID, one of the key challenges was getting marine pilots in and out of Western Australia so that ships could get in and out of ports (and so too could the merchandise). This ABC news clip highlights the role of the marine pilot and, ultimately, the value of ports to a state or a nation’s economy. Consider this when taking a stand on today’s decision by the Canadian federal labor minister to intervene in not one but two disputes involving port authorities.

Solomon Islands domestic shipping industry will soon benefit from improved vessel maintenance services thanks to a SBD$50 million investment by Solomon Islands Shipyard Limited (SISL) and the Australian Government to rehabilitate the Sasape Shipyard in Tulagi, Central Province. Visiting the Shipyard, Australian High Commissioner, Rod Hilton, said that as a maritime nation, Solomon Islands needs safe maritime transport and shipping for the movement of people and goods around the country. “That’s why Australia is partnering with a local Tulagi business – to make sure Tulagi residents are employed to rehabilitate this shipyard,” Hilton said. Sasape Shipyard is the largest employer in Central Province, employing more than 30 staff. It has the potential to offer slipping facilities for vessels of up to 500 tonnes, as well as a wide range of repair and maintenance services. Once rehabilitation works are completed next year, the shipyard will not only have the capability to fully service domestic and international vessels, it will also make the Solomon Islands a regional hub for vessel maintenance services, bringing in more work for locals. Australia’s investment of SBD50 million, which includes lending from the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific, will provide an important boost to economic development for Solomon Islanders.

It's utterly disheartening to see how Australia, like so many other developed nations, is grappling with a near-impossible challenge: the shortage of workers in manufacturing. This crisis isn't just about economic shifts or market fluctuations; it's deeply rooted in a changing workforce ethos that has left industries scrambling for hands that are all too rare these days. Gone are the times when workers marched proudly into factories, ready to contribute to the backbone of the economy. Instead, we're faced with a generation of workers who, frankly, seem to believe that manual labor is beneath them. The rise of over-education has paradoxically cultivated an underwhelming work ethic, where too many are chasing after desk jobs that keep their hands clean and their brows un-furrowed. It seems that an over-educated workforce has bred a generation too idle, too pampered, to take on roles that require actual labor. And amidst this shift, there brews a potent sense of entitlement. Many emerging from educational institutions carry not just degrees, but a misguided belief that those degrees automatically insulate them from certain types of work. They come armed with expectations of high pay and comfort, disconnected from the realities of industrial demands and economic contributions. They shun the notion of getting their hands dirty, wrapped up in a misguided sense of entitlement, expecting the world on a platter without lifting a finger. Fueling this troubling trend are our politicians, whose policies and rhetoric often reinforce these notions. They advocate for a future driven by innovation and intellect, which is certainly important, but not at the cost of forgetting the importance of traditional industries. These leaders seem to forget that it’s the workers on factory floors, the ones who assemble, craft, and produce, who have historically propelled our economy forward. This erosion of industrial labor, coupled with a political landscape that fails to address the core issues, has left us lamenting the loss of robust, industrious spirit that built our industries. What a sorry state we find ourselves in! This crisis calls for a critical reevaluation of our values and aspirations, both from our workforce and from those who lead. With a balanced mix of small, medium, and large vessels, the industry ensures that widespread communities around the country enjoy the economic perks. 📈 Economic Contributions: Each visiting cruise passenger spent an average of NZ$282.20 onshore, while crew members contributed on average NZ$73.90 per day, significantly boosting local economies. It’s incredible to see the reach of these benefits, from bustling city ports to quieter scenic spots. 🌄 A Special Note on Fiordland: While Fiordland mesmerises with its unique beauty, almost all cruise visitors experience its splendour solely from the ship, with only 0.3% disembarking. This approach helps minimise road and air congestion at one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking natural environments. It's fantastic to have clear insights into how cruise tourism enriches so many communities across New Zealand, highlighting the importance of this vibrant sector to our national economy.
