Waterways Ireland, in partnership with IPUT Real Estate Dublin, is delighted to announce a major public realm upgrade along Dublin’s Grand Canal between Leeson and Baggot Street bridges. Co-funded by Waterways Ireland and IPUT, this transformative project will enhance accessibility, improve amenities, and promote biodiversity along this important section of the canal. Key improvements include: · Increased accessibility for pedestrians & mobility aid users: Two narrow pathways will be replaced with a single wider one. · Improved amenities: Canal-bank set-aside areas, new public seating, and enhanced pedestrian access. · Enhancements to biodiversity: Native planting schemes, habitat improvements for local wildlife, and protection of existing trees. · Preserving heritage: Design sensitive to the area’s unique character and role as a vital urban green space. Scheduled to commence in January 2025, the redevelopment will be completed by early summer. Once finished, it will further establish the Grand Canal as a vibrant, accessible, and welcoming urban oasis, reinforcing its importance as a place for recreation, mental well-being, and community engagement. As part of Waterways Ireland’s commitment to fostering well-being and sustainability, this initiative reflects the goals outlined in its 10-Year Plan and 2025 Business Plan. The project will contribute to a more climate-resilient Dublin by encouraging active travel along the Grand Canal Greenway and creating a space where locals and visitors can connect with nature. Waterways Ireland and its Equality Diversity Working Group are delighted that Waterways Ireland has become a JAM Card Partner. The JAM Card is simple, discreet but effective. JAM is a clever abbreviation for Just. a. Minute and is a simple tool that allows people to ask for a minute of patience in any situation they need it. The JAM card was developed by NOW Group participants. Now Group is a multi-award-winning charity that supports people with learning differences and autism into jobs with a future. It is also available as an app for smartphones that allows users to select what their screen says from options including ‘I have autism’, ‘I have a condition’ or ‘I have a brain injury’ etc. Through that app users can see within their area all the ‘JAM Friendly’ organisations. Those with a communication barrier are often reluctant or unable to tell others about their condition. JAM Card allows this to happen in a simple, effective, non-verbal manner. The Jam Card is an initiative that we will see growing into the future and we are pleased to be a part of such a fantastic initiative. JAM card or the JAM Card app can be applied for on https://www.jamcard.org/

Proud to share another successful wellbeing initiative at Waterways Ireland! Last week, our Working Well group hosted an inspiring Men's Mental Health event that brought together exceptional speakers and practical wellness approaches. 🥗 We kicked off with expert nutritionist Sarah Keogh from Eatwell, who shared valuable insights on how nutrition impacts mental health and overall wellbeing. 💪 Kevin O'Hagan from the Irish Cancer Society provided crucial health awareness information, providing staff with the necessary knowledge and cancer preventative strategies. 🧘♂️ Darren Giles led us through an energising session combining mindfulness, kinesiology, and physical activity - proving that wellness can be both beneficial and fun! 🎯 The event culminated with a powerful talk from rugby legend and mental health advocate Brent Pope, whose personal journey and insights resonated deeply with staff. At Waterways Ireland, we believe that investing in our people's wellbeing isn't just an initiative - it's a fundamental part of our organisational culture. Events like this help break down barriers around physical and mental health discussions and provide practical tools for maintaining wellness. #WaterwaysIreland #MentalHealth #WorkplaceWellness #EmployeeWellbeing #MensHealth #WorkingWell

After its initial launch during National Heritage Week 2024, Waterways Ireland is proud to deliver the Story Map “A Boatman’s Journey- navigating the Heritage of the Grand Canal through the Eyes of a Boatman” into the public domain. This StoryMap was supported by funding from The Heritage Council Heritage Stewardship Fund 2024 and created by a collaborative team within Waterways Ireland Archive, Education, Environment, Heritage & Climate, and Inspectorate Sections, in conjunction with LUC, Paul Murphy of Merchants Gate Film, and the Heritage Boat Association (HBA). A Story Map is a digital innovation that combines various media types; including photographs, maps, drawings, videos, oral history recordings, interviews, podcasts, 3D animations, and text, to offer a rich, immersive narrative connected through a map. “A Boatman’s Journey” invites viewers to explore the Grand Canal’s rich heritage. The Grand Canal has connected communities, facilitated trade routes, created networks, and shaped the cultural landscape of the area since its conception in the 18th century. A standout feature of “A Boatman’s Journey” is a 3D animation of Barge 31M delivered by Cian McGrath of Lightroom 3D. This stunning digital recreation allows viewers to virtually step on board, explore the barge's interior, examine its Bolinder engine, and observe a boatman navigating it through the waterways. The latter can be further explored within a 3D Vista environment on the StoryMap which is now available on our website and at the following link: https://lnkd.in/eMJryDRM
