  • Planning permission has been granted for 1 Undershaft, a skyscraper matching The Shard's height at 309.6m AOD, featuring 154,000 sqm of commercial space. The building will include a free public garden on the 11th floor, a 20-meter public screen for information and performances, and Europe’s highest public viewing gallery. It will house an educational hub curated by the London Museum and contribute nearly 13% of the City of London’s additional office space requirements. Designed by Eric Parry Architects, 1 Undershaft is set to become a "totemic centrepiece," blending public engagement, civic value, and urban innovation. The redesigned lower levels enhance public access with three active frontages, aiming to create a vibrant and attractive base for the skyscraper. • Using heat pumps instead of gas boilers over the 12 days of Christmas could save 409 kWh of energy per home, enough to cook 2,900 turkeys or 5 tonnes of Brussels sprouts. Heat pumps are highly efficient, delivering 3-4 units of heat per unit of electricity consumed, making them 3-5 times more energy-efficient than gas boilers. The energy saved by heat pumps over Christmas is equivalent to running an electric oven for over 102 hours, enough to cook 47 turkeys. Despite high upfront costs, heat pumps offer significant long-term energy efficiency benefits for homeowners and the environment. What are your thoughts ? If your interested in hearing about the latest HVAC+R products join us at our HVAC+R Hub at #UKCW25 London. https://zurl.co/odGrS Source: Nesta

Author | Founder | Keynote Speaker | Top 100 Most Influential Women in the Construction Industry 2024

1 year in 1 minute… and what a year it has been! 2024 has truly been a year of stepping out of my comfort zone. I’ve faced challenges that felt daunting, scary, and uncomfortable - but it’s been an exciting year and I’ve grown so much both personally and professionally. On a personal note, it’s been tough health-wise. I had a stubborn bout of pneumonia in February that led to a number of other issues that have kept me on my toes since! 🙄 So what did I get up to this year? * I left my role at WSP in the UK after 6.5 years - a place that shaped so much of who I am professionally. * I moved into the start up world with my friends at HCP | Human Capital Partners. * I became a published author, with my book hitting #1 in engineering books on Amazon within 24 hours of launch! (WTF 😭😅) * I took the leap into freelancing, which was terrifying and exhilarating! * I was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction for the third year running. * I was a finalist for Community Hero of the Year at the On The Tools Awards, Designer Influencer at the CITB Top 100 Awards, and a Role Model Class of 2024 for UK Construction Week. * Joined the Leeds College of Building EDI Committee as an external member. * I wrote for IOSH Magazine and SHP - Health and Safety News multiple times this year. * I created the #BethsFriends feed to spark open conversations about working in health and safety 💕 * I had the privilege of visiting incredible organisations like Co-op Live and Arsenal F.C (thanks Chris Stoves CMIOSH MSyl and Jas Sekhon) to head behind the scenes and learn more and shine a light on H&S roles in other industries. * I spoke on stage at UK Construction Week for CITB and Anticipate London as well as presenting one of this years awards! * I joined the 50th-anniversary dinner celebrating the Health and Safety at Work Act with Arco: Experts In Safety at House of Commons! * I attended Hobson and Porter Education Foundations Live to inspire young people to consider careers in construction, and the fantastic Proud2bSafe mock trial - these were an absolute highlight! * I became part of IOSH’s new careers campaign to encourage more into the industry. * I attended UKREiiF in my hometown of Leeds, where the weather was bloody dreadful… 🌧️ * I worked with some amazing clients this year - thank you so much Network Rail, Quickbase, Tended and Builders Merchants Federation Ltd. I’m so incredibly grateful to everyone who's supported me - from buying my book to trusting me as your keynote speaker, from engaging with #BethsFriends posts to you guys sending the most lovely and encouraging DMs! 💕 Looking ahead to 2025:
I’m excited to officially launch The Safety Superhero Academy (stay tuned!), continue speaking at events, and keep working to make our industry more inclusive and safety-conscious. We know in the world of H&S there is still so much work to be done! 🫶 Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and safe festive break. Love, Beth x

Long post ahead – you’ve been warned haha! 😆 As the year wraps up, I’ve been taking a moment to reflect because it’s been one heck of a year. This doesn’t even include the day-to-day efforts that drive social value and sustainability, from school engagement and employment opportunities to work experience and community support initiatives. Every day has brought something new and kept us on our toes! ✨ Personal Highlights (just a little humble brag): ☑️ Won CITB Top 100 Women in Construction – Local Hero South West (still cant believe it). ☑️ Took home the Role Model Award at the Building The Future - Construction and Built Environment Sector Awards 2024. ☑️ Awarded Mentor of the Year by the EDT (The Engineering Development Trust) for supporting their Bronze projects. ☑️Finalist for Inspirational Construction Champion at the MBCC Awards. ☑️ Spoke at some amazing events, including UK Construction Week, Anticipate London, CITB, and South Gloucestershire and Stroud College Skills Conferences—proof you can talk too much and still get applauded. None of this would have been possible without my incredible team, Lucie and Amelia. Thank you for your hard work, ideas, and support this year. I’m so excited to see what we can achieve together in 2025! Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!🎄🎅 #Sustainability #SocialValue #ConstructionLeadership #WomenInConstruction #MakingAnImpact
