Our Director of Media Freedom Programmes, Will Church, chaired an important panel discussion at a workshop in Geneva today, jointly hosted by the UK Mission Geneva, OHCHR, and the Commonwealth Small States Office. The session brought together distinguished speakers, including H.E. Mrs. Riia Salsa-Audiffren, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Estonia to the UN in Geneva, alongside Fiona Crack, Deputy Director of BBC Global News, Iain Levine, Director for Human Rights Policy at Meta, and Rebecca MacKinnon, VP of Global Advocacy at Wikimedia Foundation. Discussions focused on best practices for protecting media freedom in the digital space, strategies to combat online harm, and effective responses to restrictions on freedom of expression. The panel also explored solutions to tackle disinformation and its impact on human rights.

It was an honour to attend the Committee to Protect Journalists International Press Freedom Awards in New York on Thursday (Nov. 21), which raised $2.4 million to protect journalists around the world. Congratulations to all the winners, whose courage in reporting from areas of conflict was truly humbling to hear, and a reminder of the critical importance of our work to protect the resilience of independent media around the world. Terrific to catch up with Rebecca Vincent of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Committee to Protect Journalists CEO Jodie Ginsberg, whose powerful articulation of the growing attacks on journalists are a stark reminder that all those invested in protecting a free press must double down on their efforts.

🗣️ "These companies are paying the cost of this so let’s build some businesses at their expense.” As the world ponders how to utilise AI and what could change, journalist and author Kara Swisher shares her take. Swisher has been one of the more prominent voices criticising the excesses of tech in recent years. She argues that big firms will never innovate if they are allowed to get big and stamp out the competition, and predicts Google will be broken up by antitrust authorities in the US. At the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s annual Trust Conference earlier this year in London, Avi Asher-Schapiro from our media partner Context Newsroom sat down with Kara Swisher. 🗣️ "We do not have a clear picture of which tools companies are using, what data sets they are trained on, how they will be deployed, their rollout strategies and, ultimately, what the impact will be on their workers." 🌐🤖 In the AI conversation, big tech often takes center stage, overshadowing the need for transparency in how companies are using unregulated tools. To address these challenges, we are working with UNESCO to support business leaders confidently map their AI usage, fostering transparency and accountability. We’ve joined forces with UNESCO in a new partnership that will help shape ethical AI use across the corporate sector. 🤝 Our CEO Antonio Zappulla, OMRI and UNESCO’s Assistant Director General Gabriela Ramos share their thoughts on how the AI Governance Disclosure Initiative will drive forward transparency on how AI is already being used – enabling businesses to harness the power of AI while safeguarding against potential risks. ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/er4FFguP

Powerful insights from Laura Aguirre of SembraMedia and Alharaca at this year's Trust Conference: A looming foreign agent law in El Salvador has forced many journalists to consider exile. Across Latin America, threats and harassment are driving journalists to seek refuge in countries like Costa Rica, Mexico, and the U.S. In response, we've teamed up with SembraMedia to create essential guides for newsrooms starting anew in exile. These resources cover everything from setting up a sustainable media outlet to choosing the right legal status. 🗂 Download the guides now to learn more: https://lnkd.in/e99JeKUF #TC2024

Thomson Reuters Foundation reposted this
Some days ago I attended Thomson Reuters Foundation Trust Conference to explore the intersections of democracy, #digital human interaction, and tech policy. It was exhilarating to hear Nobel laureate Maria Ressa and tech journalist Kara Swisher. What a pair of sharp minds and purposeful women! 💪🏽 Later, I had the privilege of sharing the stage with Wendy Chen, Andrew Pakes , Irakli Khodeli and Andrew Strait. Together, we dove into #AI governance and how the private sector can operationalize ethical and responsible AI. I shared some learnings from our Mastercard journey - how placing people at the center of our tech and data governance isn't just good ethics, it's good business. One key governance feature looking ahead, is🌍 "regulatory interoperability" 🌎- think of it as creating #bridges between different countries' AI rules, making it easier to build and deploy solutions that work across borders, while adapting to local contexts. Looking forward to keeping the conversation going! These spaces are essential to foster honest and action-driven dialogue among civil society, government and businesses on AI and it’s effects on our society.
