#WeekendWatch from the ever wonderful Alliance magazine on Philanthropy and the Common Good: https://lnkd.in/emeumvms The atomisation of society, an economy based on competition and growing distrust of politics and of institutions in general: these are some of the factors that have led to a diminished commitment to the common good (broadly, anything that benefits and is shared by all members of a given community). Yet, thus broadly understood, pursuit of the common good should be a necessary step in producing more equitable societies and a planet that continues to be habitable. But the devil is in the detail. There is more disagreement than agreement about what comprises the common good. Questions we will explore in the webinar include: Is the common good any more than an abstraction? - Who defines it? - Whose responsibility is it to secure it and, more particularly for today’s discussion, what role does philanthropy have in revivifying the notion and helping to secure its various elements, especially where philanthropy itself is one of the institutions facing scepticism? - Can philanthropy’s commitment to this issue help to restore its legitimacy and the necessary behaviour to become a societal norm for the future? The High-Level Political Forum (#HLPF2024) recently concluded, highlighting the pivotal role of women and girls in achieving sustainable development.   This year’s forum focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at ending poverty and hunger, taking action on climate, fostering partnerships, and building peace, justice, and strong institutions. Gender responsive policies and action are central to achieve those goals.   In line with its normative mandate, UN Women has supported UN Member States in negotiating the 2024 HLPF Ministerial Declaration, which serves as the main outcome of the Forum.   In the Ministerial Declaration, UN Member States: ✅ Committed to significantly increasing investments to close the gender gap and strengthening support for institutions in relation to gender equality and the empowerment of women at the global, regional, and national levels.  ✅ Committed to eliminating all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, including through the engagement of men and boys.   ✅ Committed to redoubling efforts to resolve or prevent conflict and to support post-conflict countries, including by ensuring that women have a role in peacebuilding and State-building. ✅ Reaffirmed the centrality of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the 2030 Agenda and agreed that women and girls must enjoy equal access to quality education, economic resources, and political participation as well as equal opportunities with men and boys for employment, leadership and decision-making at all levels.  ✅ Reaffirmed the importance of the participation of women in all stages of peace processes, conflict prevention, conflict resolution and peacebuilding to maintain and promote international peace and security. ✅ Recognized that the feminization of poverty persists and acknowledged the mutually reinforcing links between the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls and the eradication of poverty. ✅ Recognized the need to make special efforts to meet nutritional needs, especially of women, and further recognized that infant and young child mortality can be reduced through the improved nutritional status of women of reproductive age. ✅ Agreed that the systematic mainstreaming of a gender perspective in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda is crucial.   While it is encouraging to see gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls recognized as a catalyst for peace and sustainable development, stronger commitments, increased resources, and effective collective action are needed to make gender equality a reality.   👉 Read more about the centrality of the gender equality agenda within the 2024 HLPF here: https://lnkd.in/ggnMTK_W #GlobalGoals #genderequality #SDG5

This week I had the privilege of attending as an observer for #ClimateActionNetwork the 3rd board meeting of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD). Some key take-aways: -         The Board elected the first Executive Director of the Fund, Ibrahima Cheikh Diong. https://lnkd.in/eVjGjfc8 The appointment is a welcome step. As observers, we look forward to working closely with the new ED and we hope that he will demonstrate an early commitment to the meaningful participation of civil society and affected groups in the decisions of the Fund and to deliver equitable, transparent, rights-based and inclusive climate finance to affected countries and communities. He will also have to mobilise finance at scale for the Fund, including through new financial sources to generate additional revenue. ·      The Board also confirmed that the conditions set by the COP28 decision in relation to the World Bank hosting the Fund can be met. They also adopted the host agreement, trustee agreement, two forms of contribution agreements / arrangements and the Board requested the co-chairs to sign the agreements with the WB. All these negotiations were conducted without the participation of observers and the above-mentioned documents have not been shared with observers. They will be published only after they are officially signed. The World Bank and the Board of the Fund justified this lack of transparency with the need to ensure confidentiality while the agreements were negotiated. We believe though that observers were deprived of te ability to exercise their fundamental oversight role. ·      These two items above took most of the time at this session. Other matters that were decided include: -         The adoption of the annual report to COP/CMA -         The adoption of the decision and concept note for the high-level event that will launch the High Level Dialogue on Funding Arrangements. While the High-Level Dialogue will only happen in April 2025 on the margins of the Spring Meeting of the IMF/WB, the high-level event will happen during COP29 co-hosted by the co-chairs of the Board and the COP29 Presidency -         There was no time to discuss the Additional Rules of Procedure (relevant to observers participation) but the Board agreed to support the work ahead of the fourth meeting The fourth meeting of the Board (2-5 December) will be key as they will have to discuss, if not adopt, all the policies related to observers engagement and participation, access modalities (i.e. who and how can access the funds) and the vision and “business model” of the Fund. It was a strange meeting for observers, excluded for more than 2/3 of the sessions. But we hope it was only exceptional. At least we had the chance to express our views on the last day. Islands and island communities are on the front line of #ClimateChange impacts, while contributing very little to the converging, compound crisis of #GlobalWarming, failing #ocean health and #biodiversity loss. In preparatory discussions in Bonn for this year's #UNFCCC #COP29, island nations have called for a vast new funding pledge with a 2035 deadline, targeted at restoring or compensating the sometimes irreparable harm caused to their economies, ecosystems and livelihoods. While this is sure to be a hotly debated and highly contentious issue, beyond pledging funds (which remains important), action is crucial to addressing these issues. Given the magnitude of the threat and the challenge, #ClimateAction, #OceanAction and #BiodiversityAction all need to be accelerated and scaled up if we want to keep 1.5°C alive, restore the health of the #ocean and stem and reverse biodiversity loss. #SustainableDevelopment https://lnkd.in/gZyTCdmk

Sierra Leone has adopted the second generation of the Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP ll) — many thanks to the ILO and its partners in Sierra Leone for giving me the opportunity to produce this report. The DWCP II aims to mobilize all resources to create jobs and working conditions in which Sierra Leoneans, especially women, youth, people with disabilities (PWD), and vulnerable groups, can work in freedom, safety, and dignity. Open Call for Expressions of Interest: Technical assistance to develop climate change adaptation investment plans. With funding from the United States Department of State, short-term technical assistance will be available to at least six developing countries—with at least three being Small Island Developing States (SIDS)—via the NAP Global Network’s Country Support Hub. Countries eligible for this support are listed below. Supporting developing countries in translating their national adaptation priorities articulated in their national adaptation plans (NAPs) or related plan/strategy into realistic and coherent adaptation investment plans is critical to bring much needed support to build resilience in the face of a changing climate. It will require many partners, and the NAP Global Network is delighted to be able to play its part in these efforts. How to Submit an EOI to Access Support Countries interested in accessing support are invited to contact us at [email protected]. EOIs can be formally submitted by completing a Country Support Hub Request Form - available on our website. EOIs will be accepted on a rolling basis for consideration until the available funding has been allocated.

As heatwaves, hurricanes and wildfires cause increasing devastation and loss in communities around the world, we only have a few opportunities left as an international community to take concerted action and avoid a catastrophic rise in global temperatures. One of these is #COP29 - kicking off in Baku in a couple of weeks. With countries being expected to submit the next round of national climate pledges under the Paris Agreement in 2025, all eyes will be on these plans, also known as NDCs 3.0. These new pledges will determine whether the world will be collectively on track to keep global average temperature rise below 1.5°C. At UNDP, we are now leading an effort that brings together United Nations agencies to help countries align their NDCs with the Paris Agreement goals. This extended period of extreme heat is being called “another red alert” for humanity, highlighting the urgent need to address climate change. Iran's Guardian Council has released the final slate of six candidates for the upcoming June 28 presidential election. Among those qualified is Masoud Pezeshkian, a candidate endorsed by the "Reform Front" whose inclusion has surprised many observers. Pezeshkian, known for his criticism of hardline policies and his support for the nuclear agreement, previously faced disqualification in elections, making his current candidacy a significant turnaround. His presence could signal the regime's concerns over the significant decline in voter turnout in recent elections—a trend that challenges the Islamic Republic’s claims of popular legitimacy. This crisis of legitimacy comes at a pivotal time, as Islamic Republic confronts major challenges, including an anticipated leadership transition and ongoing international and regional tensions. We are seeing and feeling the impacts of the climate crisis everywhere, with extreme heat events, record floods, wildfires, droughts and much more. Women are often hit the hardest. But they are also behind some of the most innovative and scalable solutions to help communities build climate resilience. For example, Climate Resilience for All has partnered with the Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA), a trade union for informal workers in India, and insurance companies Swiss Re and ICICI Lombard to develop secure low-cost extreme heat-wave insurance so that women in the informal sector across India receive payouts when temperatures rise above 46° Celsius. Heat insurance is life-saving, allowing climate-vulnerable women to continue to feed their families without compromising their health and safety. This pioneering insurance scheme is climate adaptation at its best: directly reaching those most in need when they need support the most. What might be a sustainable approach to hosting refugees? In the context of #WorldRefugeeDay, I would like to share with you an article by Mohamed COULIBALY, Johannes Hoogeveen, Emilie Jourdan and Aboudrahyme Savadogo, PhD, that shows that increasing refugees’ financial autonomy through progressive policies is an effective approach to minimize reliance on humanitarian assistance: In #Chad, policies allowing refugees to earn incomes, have reduced their poverty rates from 88% to 50% percent. A lack of #gender-specific data often hinders the formulation of effective policies. Through The World Bank Strengthening Gender Statistics (SGS) project, gender-specific indicators on labor force participation, unemployment, mobile phone ownership, agricultural land ownership, among many others, have been made available for 12 partner countries. This information, available for research, policy design, and monitoring, can accelerate efforts to advance gender equality. At #COP29, my message is clear: we need an ambitious climate #adaptation goal and focus on how the poorest #communities, who are more being impacted, can benefit. If we are going to have a successful #energy and sustainable #foodsystems transition, individual #communities need to reap and feel the benefits. Climate #adaptation investments are not a sunk cost. They save lives and support #livelihoods and are key to address #inequality. Extreme heat, too much or too little #water are threatening the #livelihoods of small-scale food producers who supply over a third of the world's #food. In Brazil, #coffee production was hit by historic drought. In Ghana, erratic rains cut #cocoa production by half. And in Southern #Africa, #maize harvests are well below average due to an historic dry spell. In many #commodities and #crops this is also impacting #food prices. Food #inflation across developed and developing economies will alway impact more those #communities with lower incomes and who are less #resilient to these shocks. So here in #Baku, as world leaders work toward new climate #finance goals, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is advocating for a truly ambitious commitment to support small-scale #farmers.
