Global Fishing Watch has emerged as a leader in open data, using cutting-edge technologies like satellite imaging and machine learning to generate actionable insights, and publishing open-access tools, datasets, and code to enhance ocean stewardship for the benefit of all. We will work with them to define a comprehensive data ethics commitment, emphasising the principles of responsible data stewardship to ensure ethical and transparent management of data. It's great to be in Brighton at Blast Theory with our project partners on #FRAIM, The University of Sheffield's Denis Newman-Griffis and Susan Oman, plus Matt Adams and colleagues from Blast Theory who have created #CONSTANTWASHINGMACHINE as part of a cross-disciplinary research project on Responsible AI. In the launch panel - "Art can make you think differently; thinking the same is what gets you into every AI problem you can imagine," says Denis Newman-Griffis; "imagining what responsibility in terms of AI means to you, your relationship with it is constantly changing" adds Susan Oman; and "organisations cannot 'sit this out' - it is happening right here, right now" says Matt Adams. Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) revealed that an AI system showed bias according to people’s age, disability, marital status, and nationality when recommending people to investigate for welfare fraud.
