  • 🗺️ Did you know the Cocos Island National Park is home to one of the largest no-fishing zones in the Eastern Tropical Pacific? 🇨🇷 To help manage the vast marine protected area (MPA)—expanded as part of Costa Rica's commitment to protect 30% of the country's waters, authorities are turning to the powerful tool: Marine Manager. 📊 Harnessing vessel tracking data accessed through the marine manager portal, Global Fishing Watch experts were able to analyze activity taking place within the MPA. This positioned our team to work with those in charge to discuss key findings and support in shaping a management plan. 🐟 To date, results are promising. Data-driven insights made available through our platform showed a reduction in illegal fishing in 2024, which has been acknowledged by the National Park authorities. Learn more. bit.ly/4iLIHPO

  • 🚨 Major development: Global Fishing Watch welcomes the adoption of a sustainable fisheries resolution by the United Nations General Assembly — calling it a critical step forward in making transparency the standard practice in ocean and fisheries management. The resolution, adopted on December 12 by the U.N. body's 193 members, follows inputs provided by Global Fishing Watch. "The 2024 resolution is an important step in the right direction, as it aligns the international community with the Global Fishing Watch vision of using data and transparency to achieve sustainable and accountable fisheries management," said our Director of International Policy, Courtney Farthing (she/her). This level of alignment has long been our organization's goal to ensure that transparency becomes the standard — not the exception. With continued support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, Global Fishing Watch remains committed to advancing transparency as a principle of ocean governance and engaging member states of the U.N. to adopt policies that help foster more sustainable fishing practices. • 🤝 Partnership in action! We are excited to hand over a guide outlining how transshipment activities of Panama-flagged vessels can be effectively monitored to comply with national and international regulations. ⛴️ We are grateful for the Swedish PostCode Foundation’s support in this collaborative effort, which was created through consultations with the Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama’s (ARAP) and led by Global Fishing Watch. 📊 The guide, informed by an independent needs assessment, focused on improving transshipment monitoring through a simple step-by-step process. Key contributions came from the IMCS Network, WildAid and expert leadership from Maria Sierra. Learn more about our work and collaboration with Panama! bit.ly/3TyxDe7 | #ProjectForChange

  • Simply put—we cannot manage what we cannot see. By making information available and accessible to everyone it affects, the governance of our ocean can be enhanced. This level of transparency builds compliance, helps protect fishers and is fundamental in driving action toward sustainable fisheries management. A binding vessel tracking agreement, adopted by all States, can help make this a reality. Find out more. bit.ly/3xqJbbu
