The Open Data Institute works with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem
About us
The ODI is a non-profit company, founded in 2012 by inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and AI expert, Sir Nigel Shadbolt, and headquartered in King’s Cross, London, UK. Our mission is to work with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem. We want a world where data works for everyone. To do this, we work with businesses, governments, research organisations, public bodies, civil society, and philanthropic and other grant-giving organisations. THE WORK WE DO The ODI operates as an institute, and we also undertake commercial work that advances our mission. Our operating costs are met through a range of grants and commercial revenue. Our work includes applied research; consultancy services; training; and providing free reports, tools and webinars. We focus our efforts in three broad areas: 1. Improving the data practices of organisations so that they can build and manage adequate data infrastructure and data use 2. Tackling challenges so that the data ecosystem works better 3. Gathering and creating research, evidence and knowledge about data and the benefits of open, trustworthy data access, to inform companies and policymakers as they create data infrastructure, assets, practices and policies. If you’d like to help us advance this work, we'd love to hear from you – please get in touch at [email protected]

Despite broad agreement on the critical importance of data to AI development, attempts to understand and query this data are stilted by poor transparency practices. We've developed a new framework to analyse the maturity of model providers in providing the relevant information needed for meaningful transparency. As the Web evolves, can we break out of the cycle of large companies controlling the collection, storage and flow of data as part of an omnipresent advertising machine? New initiatives and their enthusiastic communities are crucial to spur on the evolution of the Web and the digital future. Solid is one such initiative seeking a change in data storage and access practices, and aims to empower users with full control of their data. Open Data Institute reposted this
It's great to be in Brighton at Blast Theory with our project partners on #FRAIM, The University of Sheffield's Denis Newman-Griffis and Susan Oman, plus Matt Adams and colleagues from Blast Theory who have created #CONSTANTWASHINGMACHINE as part of a cross-disciplinary research project on Responsible AI. In the launch panel - "Art can make you think differently; thinking the same is what gets you into every AI problem you can imagine," says Denis Newman-Griffis; "imagining what responsibility in terms of AI means to you, your relationship with it is constantly changing" adds Susan Oman; and "organisations cannot 'sit this out' - it is happening right here, right now" says Matt Adams. Thanks to our #DataAsCulture Curator, Hannah Redler-Hawes for leading on the Open Data Institute's work in this fascinating project. I've said it before and will say it again - no job has more variety #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #ResponsibleAI #Data
