  • Work to begin on city’s new Riverside Park 🌳 An ambitious project to transform swathes of land spanning both sides of the River Wear into a new city centre park is set to get underway. Esh construction has been appointed by Sunderland City Council to lead on the first phase of Riverside Park, situated at the heart of #RiversideSunderland. One of the UK’s largest urban regeneration projects, Riverside Sunderland is a multi-billion-pound project breathing new life into the city’s former industrial heartland. Covering 13.7 hectares of parkland and 5.3 hectares of river, Riverside Park, which comprises Galley’s Gill, Kingsley Gardens, Lambton Riverside and Wearmouth Riverside, will be delivered in several phases as the wider regeneration progresses. Phase one will include the creation of the new park entrance, which will be situated at the southern end of Galley’s Gill, between the Riverside multi-storey car park and the new Eye Hospital. The area includes new ponds and landscaping that will provide attractive and interactive social spaces and a variety of flora and fauna that will increase biodiversity and natural habitat. The New Wear footbridge team have been spreading Christmas cheer across three local initiatives. Kicking off the festivities, the team supported the Fans Museum by putting up their Christmas tree, creating a festive atmosphere for visitors to enjoy. Next, the team donated approximately £500 worth of Christmas gifts to Love, Ameila, a Sunderland-based baby bank charity they’ve previously supported. The gifts included beauty pamper sets, baby toys, princess costumes and Lego sets, all chosen to brighten the lives of vulnerable families in the region. Finally, the team supported Sunderland Foodbank by dedicating five hours of volunteering across two December sessions. The team sorted donations in the main distribution warehouse before they go to more local distribution centres across Sunderland and County Durham. During their first session the team boxed up 800kg of food. The team has enjoyed giving back to the community at Christmas and are proud to support such great local causes Sunderland City Council NEPO

  • Cllr Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for business, housing and regeneration at Sunderland City Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see the New Wear Footbridge already having such a major impact on the city. “One of the things we stipulate when going out to tender for Sunderland City Council-led projects is that as much of the Sunderland pound is kept in Sunderland as possible, and this is a fine example of how we’re doing just that. “The project is creating jobs for local people, opportunities for local businesses and invaluable education and training opportunities for youngsters, all while helping us deliver one of – if not – the UK’s most ambitious city centre regeneration projects. “It really is a central pillar of what we’re trying to build here in Sunderland, and we can’t wait to see how it continues to lift the local economy as work enters the final stage and it finally opens to the public next summer.”

Construction of the New Wear Footbridge is already providing a significant boost to the local economy, new figures have revealed 📈 Since the start of construction in Spring 2023, 21 local people have secured jobs, four apprenticeship roles have been created, six work experience students supported and 66 hours of education engagement to local schools have been delivered. Thanks to a series of initiatives led by lead contractor VolkerStevin, £3.1million worth of social value has been delivered to communities, demonstrating a lasting positive impact for locals, the natural environment and beyond. Procuring from local suppliers, stipulated as “high priority” by Sunderland City Council during the tender process, has also seen VolkerStevin spend over £1.8m with Sunderland businesses and a further £4.4m spent with small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
