  • 🎄Our amazing teams have been busy supporting a number of food banks this week. 🎄 ✨ At VolkerSite Services, VolkerGround Engineering and VolkerMarine Services, the team donated an incredible £1,800 worth of food and provisions to the Morecambe Bay Foodbank. These contributions will help support 40-50 families over Christmas and into the New Year. ✨ Earlier today we also delivered a fantastic collection to Chorley Help the Homeless which included tinned vegetables, pasta, biscuits, toiletries and more. In addition to the food donation, we contributed £500 from the VolkerStevin Community Giving Pot to further support their efforts. ✨Some of our team working on the New Wear Footbridge in Sunderland have been back volunteering at Durham Christian Partnership foodbank, which supports both County Durham and Sunderland. This morning, the team got stuck in sorting and creating packs for distribution centres. A huge thank you to everyone who played a part in making this possible. Your kindness and generosity are helping to brighten up Christmas for so many people.

The dedication, hard work, and seamless coordination of every team member have been remarkable, and I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together. This is just one of many milestones in what is shaping up to be an exceptional project, and we look forward to delivering even more for the community in the months ahead." What an incredible couple of weeks it’s been for our project teams as they've come together to spread kindness and festive cheer in the communities we work in. First up, a huge shoutout to our amazing team at Kendal for raising money for North West Air Ambulance during Christmas Jumper Day! A massive thank you to everyone who donated and got involved. Over in Littleborough, the team got into the festive spirit by wearing Christmas jumpers to raise funds for food supplies for local Foodbanks in Rochdale. Not only did the team raise money to support the Rochdale Petrus Hub and Rochdale Foodbank, but they also donated warm coats, new sleeping bags, and a box of food to help those in need. Our Macclesfield team continued with the festive spirit supporting the Salvation Army Christmas gift appeal and local Foodbank, Silk Life, with donations of toiletries and tins of food, which will go a long way to providing support to vulnerable people and families in Macclesfield. Finally, the Kendal team visits to local Kendal churches were a heartwarming success! The team brought along boxes of mince pies to share with parishioners, providing a chance to connect and update people on the ongoing works of the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme. A wonderful way to engage with the local community over a cup of coffee and a festive treat. Here’s to continuing our mission of spreading goodwill and making a positive impact in the communities we serve!

The C2V team working on the Macclesfield Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) recently visited St James Catholic High School. Led by Site Agent Sam Beacham, the visit kicked off with an introduction to VolkerStevin and the diverse range of projects we’re proud to work on. Sam also gave students a behind-the-scenes talk about the work happening at Macclesfield WwTW. The students then got stuck into interactive sessions led by our civil, electrical and mechanical engineers. Students had the opportunity to learn how to use GPS technology and setting out equipment, allowing them to draw a house to scale—a fun and practical way to understand how we build the world around us. They also explored hydraulic modelling by experimenting with water tanks, drills, and pumps, gaining hands-on experience in managing water systems on-site. Additionally, our team guided them through the various stages of engineering projects, from design to delivery, bringing real-world processes to life in an engaging and interactive way. A parent of one of the students from St James Catholic High School said: “My daughter came home with such enthusiasm about the visit, it was clear to see that you had delivered an incredibly valuable and interactive session. “My daughter would like to work in engineering and this session has amplified that determination even more!” It is great to see that our teams are inspiring students to consider careers in engineering. Visits like this not only spark interest but also highlight the impact of major projects like Macclesfield WwTW.

  • The New Wear footbridge team have been spreading Christmas cheer across three local initiatives. Kicking off the festivities, the team supported the Fans Museum by putting up their Christmas tree, creating a festive atmosphere for visitors to enjoy. Next, the team donated approximately £500 worth of Christmas gifts to Love, Ameila, a Sunderland-based baby bank charity they’ve previously supported. The gifts included beauty pamper sets, baby toys, princess costumes and Lego sets, all chosen to brighten the lives of vulnerable families in the region. Finally, the team supported Sunderland Foodbank by dedicating five hours of volunteering across two December sessions. The team sorted donations in the main distribution warehouse before they go to more local distribution centres across Sunderland and County Durham. During their first session the team boxed up 800kg of food. The team has enjoyed giving back to the community at Christmas and are proud to support such great local causes Sunderland City Council NEPO

VolkerWessels UK has been ranked 9th in the National Centre for Diversity’s ‘Top 100 Most Inclusive Workplaces Index 2024’ and has been awarded the ‘Engineering Company of the Year’ for the fifth consecutive year. Alongside this, we are proud to have retained their top 10 status in the National Centre for Diversity ‘Top 100 Most Inclusive Employers Index’ for 2024, finishing in 9th place, and were also awarded Engineering Company of the Year for the fifth consecutive year. The Index celebrates employers across various sectors, including construction, further education, charities, and public service that have shown outstanding commitment to Fairness, Respect, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement (FREDIE). The rankings are based on employee feedback from organisations that work towards the NCFD’s Investors in Diversity standard.  Emma Ward, Head of Sustainability and Inclusion, reflects on the award - “During 2024 we have built on our RESPECT programme which focusses on respecting our colleagues, even if they are different to you. This included a year-long Faith campaign which raised awareness of the most common faiths held by employees and we enjoyed sharing the different cultures, customs, traditions and celebrations online and during in person events.  We also supported our female employees by hosting our first Women in Construction Networking event alongside continuing our female reverse mentoring programme, launching the second cohort of the EMPOWER female career development programme, and refreshing our PPE offering for women.  Our 140 strong FIR Champions have been exceptional this year, and the introduction of Lead Champions in each of our businesses has meant more activities and awareness events have been held than ever before.” Solat Chaudhry, Chief Executive at the National Centre for Diversity said:     “I send my warmest congratulations to VolkerWessels UK on successfully reaching number 9 in the Top 100 Most Inclusive UK Employers Index 2024. The inspiring organisations that make the Top 100, demonstrate excellent levels of employee retention and recruitment and clearly demonstrate how they value and respect the people that work for them.  What better than to be recognised by peers and those travelling in the same direction towards the common goal of Fairness in the workplace. It is hugely motivational.” Read more about our FIR strategy here > https://bit.ly/3ZItoP6

  • VolkerStevin is working with the Environment Agency to reduce flood risk to over 1,400 homes and businesses in Tonbridge, Hildenborough and downstream communities. The Leigh expansion and Hildenborough embankment scheme has 2 aspects: increasing the capacity of the Leigh Flood Storage Area (FSA) and constructing a new embankment to protect homes in Hildenborough. The most significant risk of flooding in Hildenborough comes from the River Medway backing up the Hawden Stream. To reduce this, the scheme has been designed to reduce flood risk to as many homes with as little impact on the local community as possible. The scheme will include a new embankment, pumping station and penstock structure on the Hawden Stream. It is designed to work with the Leigh flood storage area expansion and will further reduce flood risk to Hildenborough from the River Medway. The Environment Agency has put together the below animation to help better explain how the scheme will help to reduce flood risk to local communities. https://lnkd.in/e73eq_Jh
