We're excited to share the news that NE1's Dragon Boat Race will return in 2025, following the resounding success of this year’s event, and bookings are now live to secure your boat! In September, over 600 participants took part in the event, raising over £20,000 for Newcastle Hospitals Charity, with over 10,000 visitors enjoying the races from the banks of the Tyne. The public race day will take place on Saturday 27th September, offering an exciting on-water competition alongside family-friendly activities on the Quayside. Aside from the action on the water, teams will raise valuable funds for this year's nominated charity, the Great North Children's Hospital. We’re delighted to also host our Corporate Race Day on Friday 26th September, exclusively for Newcastle city businesses, so whether it's the battle of the law firms, the retailers, accountants or property agents, there's lots of competitive fun to be had! Spaces are limited to 26 teams across both days, so early booking is essential. For further details and to secure your team’s place, visit ne1dragonboatrace.com. A huge thank you to staff from Virgin Money and WSP who gave up their time to serve Christmas lunches to The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust staff at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital. Collectively they helped serve a staggering 700+ Christmas lunches. Thank you for all your support.

Newcastle NE1 Christmas Markets launched earlier this month, and very kindly offered us our very own stall. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank Newcastle NE1 for this platform, to promote the charity, highlighting the work that we do, and how members of the public can support us. Alongside local traders, we joined the festive buzz in the city centre. Last year the Christmas markets welcomed more than 1.3million visitors, with this year looking to be just as successful. All profits raised will go back into the charity. If you haven’t yet been, we’re here every day until this Friday, the 6 December. This is your opportunity to support Newcastle Hospitals Charity and find out more about what we do to support our staff, patients and the wider Newcastle Hospitals community.

Our Charity Director, Teri Bayliss, and Volunteer Services Manager, Alison Haigh, represented Newcastle Hospitals Charity at the House of Commons last week, at the launch of Helpforce's research publication: “Unlocking the power of volunteering”. As well as celebrating the significant impact that volunteers have within healthcare, Helpforce are exploring the future power of volunteering for patients, communities and as a route to future employment. Reminder: Newcastle Hospitals Charity could receive £1,000 with your help! Nominate us for a chance to win £1,000 as part of Benefact Group's annual Movement for Good Awards in December. £1,000 supports our research team to test and trial new approaches; without it, many projects which go on to provide new cures, drugs, treatments or diagnostics would not be possible. It’s quick and easy to nominate online, just follow the link which will add in all the information you need to put us forward: https://orlo.uk/tz6dE

Singing for Lung Health is a new pilot programme of singing sessions designed for people with long-term respiratory and lung conditions across Newcastle. Newcastle Hospitals Charity is delighted to work with singer-songwriter Elizabeth Corney to deliver the pilot programme working in collaboration with existing lung condition support groups in Newcastle, with the intention of co-developing a longer-term Singing for Lung Health programme in the North East. The sessions aim to support lung health and help manage various symptoms through singing, vocal and breathing exercises using communal and social singing sessions. The sessions also aim to help strengthen breathing muscles and reduce feelings of shortness of breath, while also improving wellbeing through singing together. There is growing research to suggest singing can improve respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), long covid, pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, and other chronic respiratory conditions; and can actively reduce GP visits, hospitalisations and improve respiratory related quality of life. If you’d to get involved with Singing for Lung Health or find out more information, please contact us on: [email protected] To find out more about our Arts Programme, please visit our website: https://orlo.uk/q1SGk

Newcastle Hospitals Charity is working with New Writing North to provide opportunities for shared reading to enhance the patient experience during hospital stays. This new initiative is a collaboration through our Arts Programme and volunteers services. Shared reading is an interactive experience whereby the act of reading a text aloud is shared by a pair, or group of people. The principles of shared reading can also be used to encourage conversation and promote relationships. Books and reading allow us to connect to the world around us, and we want to use interactive reading as a way to foster this connection and enhance the patient experience in hospital and improve staff wellbeing. Volunteers are supported to undertake shared reading on selected wards, using a selection of texts to facilitate reading and talking with patients and staff. This programme of activity helps to negate social isolation and help to support mental stimulation and alleviate boredom during hospital stays. If you are a member of The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust staff and interested in having shared reading volunteers visit your ward, please contact [email protected] To find out more about our Arts Programme and volunteering opportunities please visit the ‘get involved’ section of our website: https://orlo.uk/XI4qv
