The four pillars: 1️⃣ Voluntary initiatives: Cities and businesses take the first step, innovating and experimenting. 2️⃣ Orchestration initiatives: Campaigns like Race to Zero scale and align these efforts. 3️⃣ Standards: Credible benchmarks, such as ISO Net Zero standards, create consistency. 4️⃣ Regulations: Finally, binding laws amplify the impact, locking in progress. The Net Zero Tracker’s latest open source graphic, created by John Lang, aims to shed light  - based on a paper first published in 2021 by University of Oxford Professor Thomas Hale, the Conveyor Belt illustrates how different non-State entities can lay the groundwork for international standards - which when consistently applied, can culminate in net zero regulations. How can voluntary standards, initiatives and regulation drive net zero leadership in 2025? Based on a paper first published in 2021 by Professor Thomas Hale, the Net Zero Tracker launches its latest open source graphic: the ‘Net Zero Conveyor Belt.’ This model illustrates how voluntary efforts by non-State entities - such as cities, businesses, investors and civil society, create the foundation for standards, ultimately leading to impactful regulations. How can we leverage this model to collectively move closer to net zero by 2050? First, we need entities to understand the model and where they fit within it. Through mapping the four ‘cogs’ of net zero governance - voluntary and orchestration initiatives, and standards and regulation, we aim to highlight where exactly progression is taking place and drive a groundswell of credible, rapid action toward net zero by 2050. Here's something interesting from Net Zero Tracker, the 'Net Zero Conveyor Belt' model. Created by John Lang, it illustrates how diverse yet complementary institutional tools can collectively guide the private sector toward credible net zero.

How do we govern private sector efforts to achieve credible #NetZero? And at the same time, how do we push the boundaries of political feasibility for faster action? These questions inspired my colleague Thomas Hale to develop the 'Net Zero Governance Conveyor Belt' framework so his students and others could better understand the interplay between existing governance institutions and infrastructure for steering net zero toward higher integrity. In a climate action landscape dominated by voluntarism, initiatives like CDP, the Science Based Targets initiative, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), and We Mean Business Coalition are vital. But how do they compel accountability beyond reputational and market pressures. How do they fit into the bigger picture? And where do UN-led initiatives, like the #RacetoZero, the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) and the #UNExpertGroup fit in? Launching today, my #infographic explains the #NetZeroConveyorBelt to bring Tom's framework to a wider audience. Creating this took me on my own journey. For example, I had no idea about the #QualityInfrastructure that's baked into international standards. Regulations are necessary to compel laggards and level the playing field, but without tools like the incoming ISO - International Organization for Standardization #NetZeroStandard, we risk fragmentation across jurisdictions. I learned that standards inject greater accountability into private sector action, but they also improve interoperability and the consistent application of regulations. Stuart Stone at BusinessGreen covers the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit’s new report titled ‘The Net Zero-Trade Nexus’, analysing UK trade and Net Zero Tracker data. The analysis found that 94% of UK exports, valued at £796bn, were exported to 146 nations covered by net zero commitments. The findings also uncovered increasing opportunities in the power sector, heat pump, EV and green steel industries, and also in areas such as low-carbon fertiliser production. The findings show that the UK’s transition to a net zero economy not only lowers the carbon emissions of its products and services, but that it also makes them a more desirable trading partner, in particular to the 412 major companies in the top 10 export markets which have committed to emission targets across their full supply chain. "The transition to net zero is an unstoppable global megatrend with renewables set to dominate power generation and EVs transportation," said Peter Chalkley, director at the ECIU. "The UK is well positioned to capitalise on these growth markets, in part to help offset decline in demand for high carbon products." The report makes the case that the UK could boost economic productivity at home through opening critical trade opportunities with those entities prioritising net zero.  "The standards system in every country forms a key part of the infrastructure that governments and industry rely on to bring trust and credibility to the market," added Scott Steedman, director-general at the UK's national standards body, BSI Group. The 'Net Zero-Trade Nexus' report out today highlights the evolving interplay between global #trade and climate action, particularly in the context of the UK’s alignment with #netzero-oriented companies. Amid concerns over potential pressures on UK exports to the U.S. (which account for 22% of UK exports) the report underscores how corporate net zero commitments in the U.S. could act as a proxy for trade / investment. 🎯 U.S. companies with net zero commitments collectively generate over $10.2 / £7.9 trillion in annual revenues. ⛓️ 124 / 412 companies with full supply chain (#scope3) coverage are U.S. based (including sportswear giant Nike), followed by the #EU (135), #Japan (82) and #China (11). A compelling example of how the UK’s journey to net zero complements corporate investments is #Nike's 1.3 million ft² logistics campus, currently under construction, at Magna Park #Corby, Northamptonshire. Slated to be the ‘principal hub of Nike’s UK supply chain’ this facility is designed to achieve both a #BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification and net zero carbon emissions in its construction phase. Scheduled to open in 2027, Nike's project illustrates how the UK’s ambition to become a clean energy superpower is attracting investments from companies that share the same net zero trajectory, and which are seeking ways to lower the embodied carbon of their supply chains.
