"Students only benefited from the engagement with GenAI tools when they clearly understand the task’s purpose and had a solid grasp of the underlying concepts that were required to complete it." Throughout 2024 a team of researchers led by Jon Cardoso-Silva and Marcos Ennes Barreto have been working on their GENIAL research project which focuses on how generative AI tools are used in practice by students in real time. The team has analysed how students use these tools differently across qualitative and quantitative subjects. Find out more about the project and explore project outputs and findings offering recommendations for how educators can integrate these findings into their teaching and assessment plans. 👉https://lnkd.in/eh3QrCPV #LSEDSI2024 | LSE Eden Centre for Education Enhancement

During 2024 we organised 5️⃣ fantastic #CareersinDataScience events for undergraduate and postgraduate students from across The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) to help them navigate their next steps into the world of work. In February Lauren Sager Weinstein and Jemima Clifford from Transport for London talked about "Keeping London Moving with Data". In March we held a career panel with six data scientist from the LEGO Group [including Dr. Aparna H., Saghar Motarjemi, Hayley Hubbard, Olivia Belton] Also in March Rianna B., Data Scientist at Amazon spoke about "Demystifying the transition from non-tech into data science". In October 2️⃣ brilliant LSE Alumni working at The Economist – Tabtim Duenger and Riya Chhikara – spoke about "Navigating Data Science from Academia to Media, and Beyond". In the last week of term Christian Aalby Svalesen, Senior Machine Learning Engineer at SoundCloud spoke about his career in data science across industries. Thank you Ellie Finlay for bringing all these great speakers to the DSI! #LSEDSI2024 | LSE Careers

As we come to the end of 2024 we look back on the research, teaching and engagement activities from across The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in the field of #DataScience and #AI. This year the research of DSI Affiliates has been recognised with significant awards. In July Kate Vredenburgh from the LSE Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method has been awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship (FLF). In October Michael Muthukrishna from the LSE Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize 2024 by The Leverhulme Trust. In December Milena Tsvetkova from LSE Methodology was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant. Start planning now for the dark January evenings and join us for our first two public events of 2025. 1️⃣ The art of uncertainty: living with chance, ignorance, risk, and luck Wednesday 22 January, 6.30–7.30 We live in a world where uncertainty is inevitable. David Spiegelhalter will introduce his latest book "The Art of Uncertainty How to Navigate Chance, Ignorance, Risk and Luck", and discuss how we should deal with what we don’t know and what role chance, luck and coincidence play in our lives. 2️⃣ Genesis: artificial intelligence, hope, and the human spirit Thursday 30 January, 6.30 –8.00 As AI absorbs data, gains agency, and intermediates between humans and reality, it will help us to address enormous crises, from climate change to geopolitical conflicts to income inequality. But it will also pose challenges on a scale and of an intensity that we have never seen before. Co-author Craig Mundie explains how his new book outlines a strategy for navigating the age of AI, charting a course between blind faith and unjustified fear. Interesting to hear from #DSIAffiliate Casey Kearney about his work this year with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Colombia.
This past year, students on our MPA in Data Science for Public Policy programme had the opportunity to undertake a capstone project with UNDP Colombia (PNUD Colombia) in Assistant Professor Dr. Casey Kearney’s course. 📈 🇨🇴 Our students worked with innovative data techniques and insights to design targeted policy responses to help alleviate specific vulnerabilities of businesses and individuals in the informal sector in Colombia, which makes up 40% of the country’s GDP. As a result of this collaboration, Dr. Casey Kearney also had a chance to attend the UN World Data Forum conference in Colombia this past November to share insights and learnings from these projects. Watch along to learn more about this exciting collaboration! 🎬 🔗 For more information on our MPA in Data Science for Public Policy, visit https://lnkd.in/ewECwJeS #LSEPublicPolicy #DataScience LSE Data Science Institute The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

The LSE Department of Statistics has a very strong presence at NeurIPS 2024, one of the world’s most prestigious conferences on artificial intelligence and machine learning. The event showcases ground-breaking advancements shaping the future of #AI. This year at #NeurIPS2024 LSE researchers (all #DSIAffiliates) will present five papers spanning diverse topics such as: · active learning · multi-armed bandits · causal dependence visualisation · causal reinforcement learning · kernel-based methods These studies push the boundaries of AI research, offering new insights and methodologies that address real-world challenges. The work represents collaborative efforts with leading global institutions, including Meta, The George Washington University, KAIST, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), New York University, Seoul National University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Each paper (details below) highlights the department’s commitment to developing new AI and machine learning methodologies and contributing solutions that resonate across academia and industry. If you missed our event last night launching "Feeding the machine: the hidden human labour powering AI" (published by Canongate) you can watch it now on YouTube. The conversation, expertly moderated by #DSIAffiliate Kate Vredenburgh, started with authors Callum Cant and James Muldoon talking about some of the characters, (research participants), from their book. They began with Mercy, a content moderator at an outsourced centre in Nairobi and described some of the inhuman conditions which she and others working in data centres have to endure. Kirsten Sehnbruch joined the discussion drawing on her findings from the "Quality of Employment" research project at the LSE International Inequalities Institute. You can follow the full conversation here 🔽 https://lnkd.in/e4xH3Wgw? #LSEEvents, #inequaltiy,
