Through her research on deliberative democracy, our Assistant Professor Dr. Alexandra Cirone recently consulted with Meta to implement its new community forums, a democratic initiative designed to help govern social media. This exciting #collaboration led us to hosting Meta’s Governance Director Kris R. and Technology Policy Officer Andreas Katsanevas at the School of Public Policy to speak to our students. We were thrilled to have Meta's governance team share their insights on initiatives in deliberative online governance, the role of the Oversight Board, and how tech companies can better incorporate user input into platform policy. 🎬 Watch along to learn more about another one of our recent collaborations at the SPP, where we always aim to connect what we do in the classroom with real-world application, notably by introducing our students to #policymakers and industry #experts! 🔗 To learn more about graduate study at the School of Public Policy, visit lse.ac.uk/spp/study #LSEPublicPolicy #SocialMedia #Governance #CommunityForums #Democracy The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) LSE Eden Centre for Education Enhancement

This month marks the 100th anniversary of Michael Manley, former Prime Minister of Jamaica and LSE alumnus. To commemorate, we held this term the event “Michael Manley: Visionary Leader and Global Thinker”. Anthony Bogues, Professor in the Department of History of Art and Architecture of Brown University, and a close friend of Manley retraced his life story and his contributions to global discourse on inequality. The event also had the presence of two of Michael Manley’s children: David and Natasha Manley. The chair of the evening, our Dean Andrés Velasco closed the event with these words: “The issues that [Michael Manley] highlighted back then remain very much central concerns today. And of course, it is very fitting that we should be having this evening at LSE, a place where he came, where he studied and where he developed some of the ideas that he would later put into his books and also into practice as a Prime Minister in Jamaica.” Catch the full video and podcast on our YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/eM7a9Pbs

The price of taking the High Speed 2 rail link into London’s Euston and building a new station on the site has risen to more than £7.5bn, according to confidential government documents that throw new light on the spiralling costs of the project. Our SPP Associate Dean, Professor Tony Travers, told the Financial Times that the project’s costs had become impossible to control since work started in 2017. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eEr_RMsc To stay up to date with the School of Public Policy's latest impact in the policy arena, visit lse.ac.uk/spp/news.

LSE School of Public Policy reposted this
Growing up, I always felt a special connection with the London School of Economics. That’s not because I studied there — in fact I had never set foot on campus until last week — but because my father, who I lost in 2021, always told me wonderful stories from his time as a PhD student there in the mid seventies. The stories my father told me ranged from analyses of the school’s history, to more personal ones about the thrill of being part of such a rigorous intellectual community, and the beauty of developing strong friendships during grad school. It was such a special moment for me that my first time on LSE’s campus was to speak, alongside Kris R., in Alexandra Cirone's class in the LSE School of Public Policy, where we presented Meta's innovations in governance such as the Oversight Board, as well as Community Forums that are held in partnership with the Stanford Deliberative Democracy Lab. The conversation with Dr. Cirone’s students that followed was invigorating -- and an opportunity for me to experience first hand the kind of robust intellectual culture that was woven into the stories my father told me about this place. What an experience!
At the LSE School of Public Policy, last week we were thrilled to host Meta's Kris R., Governance Director, and Andreas Katsanevas, Technology Policy Officer, who came to talk to our public policy students about "Governing Social Media." They shared fantastic insights on Meta's initiatives in deliberative online governance, the role of the Oversight Board, and how tech companies can better incorporate user input into platform policy. They also fielded many challenging questions from our sharp students!
