The publishing platform created by councils, for councils.
About us
LocalGov Drupal is a publicly owned asset that delivers a better digital experience for citizens, improves service outcomes, and saves money. Our councils have followed the Local Digital Declaration to develop a shared pool of code, resources, research and expertise, delivering great digital experiences to citizens at a lower cost, while creating a publicly owned asset. LocalGov Drupal can reduce the cost of building a new council website by up to 80%. Learn more about the business case. It is built and maintained by a community of developers, content designers and digital leaders from local councils across the UK. Web teams love the freedom, flexibility and community. Find out more about the benefits for web teams. We’ve created a web publishing platform that can be customised and used for free by any local government organisation. It includes common publishing formats, with many inspired by GOV.UK.

We're delighted to be mentioned in the latest report from the OECD Observatory of Public Sector Innovation, Global Trends in Government Innovation 2024. We're included in the "Innovative foundations for efficient public services" section. That heading very neatly describes what we are. The report goes on to say, "Encouraging the reuse and improvement of existing code trends promotes not only innovation but also cost savings and faster development cycles. For example... the United Kingdom’s LocalGov Drupal [is] developed to ensure that public administration can create intuitive, accessible and customizable websites for their digital public services." Thanks to all those who continue to contribute to the project and the OECD Observatory of Public Sector Innovation for including using their report.
🆕 OECD report highlights 5 #innovation trends in #PublicServices, drawn from nearly 800 cases across 83 countries. ➡️ Public services are the main touchpoints between governments and people. As societies change, so do the expectations placed on public services, prompting governments to find innovative ways to meet these evolving needs. It describes pioneering practices that demonstrate governments’ commitment to promoting principles of human-centred innovation of public services, as put forward by the OECD Recommendation on Human-centred Public Administrative Services. These cases reflect a shared understanding that effective public services must not only be efficient but also inclusive, accessible and adaptable to people’s needs. It is these very qualities which impact lives, business competitiveness and social prosperity, and shape trust in public institutions. Download report 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dP24kD67 Five trends in innovation for better public services: 1. Future-oriented & co-created ➡️ Governments are working with users and stakeholders to co-design solutions and anticipate future needs, creating public services that are flexible and responsive to change, and are therefore more resilient and sustainable in the long term. Standout cases from 🇫🇮 Finland, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇳🇴 Norway, & 🇺🇸 USA 2. Digital & innovative ➡️ Governments are investing in scalable digital infrastructure, experimenting with emergent technologies, and expanding innovative and digital skills. Standout cases from 🇬🇷 Greece, 🇮🇹 India, 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇵🇹 Portugal & 🇰🇷 SouthKorea. 3. Accessible & inclusive ➡️ Governments are advancing proactive and personalised services for increased accessibility, inclusion, and equity. Standout cases from 🇷🇸 Serbia, 🇸🇪 Sweden & 🇺🇸 USA 4. Data powered ➡️ Governments are using both traditional and non-traditional data sources to guide public service design, implementation, and improvements. They are increasingly using experimentation to navigate complex and unpredictable environments. Standout cases from 🇸🇬 Singapore, 🇰🇷 South Korea, 🇹🇷 Türkiye & 🇬🇧 UK 5. Public participation ➡️ Governments are seeing public services as an opportunity for citizens to exercise their rights and hold governments accountable for upholding democratic values. ⚡ We were fortunate to sponsor LocalGov Drupal Week 2024. It was a fantastic event that reminded us just how diverse and vibrant the LocalGov Drupal community is. 🙌 Over 300 participants from councils and their suppliers discussed using LocalGov Drupal to improve digital services. Maria Young looks back at her highlights from the week > https://lnkd.in/dRtWmr47 Shoutouts to those mentioned in the article for their excellent contributions. James Hall, Finn Lewis, Rupert Jabelman, Will Callaghan, Mark Conroy, Marios Ioannidis 🌐, Jamie Dixon, Wirral Council, Sheffield City Council, Cumberland Council, Essex County Council, Invuse, Woking Borough Council, Big Blue Door, Southwark Council. LocalGov Drupal Week featured presentations from developers, content designers, product managers, UX specialists, and others who came together to celebrate the brilliant work being done every day to improve digital council services. The LocalGov Drupal project continues to progress quickly, thanks to the incredible enthusiasm of its participants. This excitement is infectious, and we love being involved. We know it's the same for others, and that’s a large part of why the project continues to attract more contributors. It’s a virtuous circle of contagious enthusiasm and contributions that strengthen the distribution, giving councils more of what they need regarding functionality and community. 🤩 We are so proud to be working with the LocalGov Drupal project (a CMS built with Drupal by councils, for councils). A lot has happened this year: Many more councils launched stunning websites, the number of published microsites surpassed 30 and many new features were added. 🎊 Our Director of Delivery Mike King has a look back at 2024, and gives us a sneak peek into what we can expect in 2025. #LocalGovDrupal #Drupal #Councils #Microsites #Websites https://lnkd.in/eBKNEr82

Another incredible project that I feel privileged to have been able to contribute to since joining Local Digital. A huge shout out again to LocalGov Drupal for being at the vanguard of the Local Digital movement! The insight that they have shared has been invaluable to the Local Gov IMS team, who are led brilliantly by Glen Conroy CMgr MCMI. Streamlining the process for councils to adopt open-source solutions is an ongoing challenge. I am very impressed by the work that has taken place to support councils in the potential adoption of Local Gov IMS. My sincere hope is that the partnership between Local Gov IMS and Tailwind Digital will give councils the confidence to explore this opportunity and that interested parties get involved in this conversation ASAP!
Chief Technology Officer at Tailwind Digital, helper of public sector orgs, coach of agile teams, tech boffin.
Removing barriers to councils adopting OpenSource Software is one of our key goals right now. Having working in Local Gov ICT for over 15 years I'm well aware of the alarm bells that ring when the Open Source is mentioned. It's worth acknowledging that only a small minority of councils have the capacity and capability to take a piece of open source software and run it in the first place and even few have the appetite to do so on their own. Borrowing heavily from the proven model of the LocalGov Drupal community we are keen to show that with the right support services councils can take advantage of open source software. At the Local Gov IMS show and tell today we introduced the Tailwind Digital team that we've built to support councils as they take steps towards the adoption of Local Gov IMS. If you'd like to chat to us more about Local Gov IMS then please arrange a conversation here. https://lnkd.in/g8t3unbT Huge thanks to Glen Conroy, Leon Ackie, Ben Unsworth, Dean Swift, James Howard, Alan Mellor and many others who have provided support, advice, knowledge and encouragement as Seb Dadbin and I have delved deeper into the Local Gov IMS world.

Here's an issue I'm hoping to get around to very soon. Offline availability for LocalGov Drupal websites. Cache some of the CSS and JavaScript so we have faster sites, cache the homepage and some other pages, so they are available even if you lose your internet connection. And then iterate on this idea more and more. #drupal
