A #throwback to this important discussion on why it's not enough to be merely 'non-racist' - and how #leaders can embed anti-racism into their work and organisations. Read the full blog to catch-up here: https://lnkd.in/gPAEAv_b
In June 2024, our founder Yvonne Field OBE, joined Ashley McCaul CEO of ThinkForward UK and Christopher Murray, CEO of the Young Brent Foundation at an Impetus - Backing the best Leadership Academy Panel titled 'From Non-Racism to Anti-Racism,' discussing the difference between non-racism and anti-racism, why it is not good enough to be merely ‘non-racist’ - and crucially how leaders can effectively embed anti-racism in their work. We were really pleased to see Secretary of State Lisa Nandy visit our portfolio partner, Empire Fighting Chance this week. She was there to hear from young people and youth organisations from across Bristol as part of the launch of the new National Youth Strategy: https://lnkd.in/eWMb3snC Empire Fighting Chance is a leading sport for development charity fighting the impact of inequality on young people’s lives. Using a powerful combination of non-contact boxing and intensive personal support through coaches and therapists, they give young people the skills, knowledge and inspiration they need to make positive changes to how they think and behave, and to improve their lives. Yesterday, the Government released revised attainment statistics for key stage 2 national curriculum assessments. https://lnkd.in/enishE3M 📉 The issue: We know that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are 30% less likely to leave primary school ready for the next stage of their education, with the majority falling short of the expected standard in English and maths. 🔑 The solution: As a way to address this issue and make progress towards the Government's mission of breaking down barriers to opportunity for young people, we need to embed oracy in the curriculum as the fourth R - alongside reading, writing and arithmetic. In October, we supported the launch of the Oracy Commission’s report, “We Need to Talk”, which details the critical role of oracy education for building up young people to become citizens that live happy, successful lives - in addition to it boosting educational attainment in early years. 📖 Read more about why oracy matters: https://lnkd.in/g8xZtjhN

🎥 Have you seen our 2024 film? Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are every bit as ambitious and talented as their better-off peers. But too many are missing out on the opportunities they deserve. Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are: 🔸 40% less likely to get GCSE English and maths 🔸 40% less likely to go to university 🔸 Twice as likely to be out of a job or study after school It doesn't have to be this way. We work closely with organisations tackling the knottiest problems affecting young people today, building strong organisations that are delivering the most promising interventions supporting young people. Together, we can ensure that all young people have the opportunities they need to succeed. Discover how: www.impetus.org.uk
