As the winter nights grow colder, we’re reminded of those in our communities who may face hardship this Christmas season. When people in desperate circumstances seek shelter, they may unknowingly put themselves in danger by taking refuge near waste containers. This poses serious risks not only for them but also for others. Recent figures reveal a 27% rise in rough sleeping compared to 2022, with nearly 4,000 individuals experiencing homelessness in England on a single night in 2023—a concerning 120% increase since 2010. These statistics underscore the urgent need for compassion and action. At Biffa, we're committed to ensuring safety and dignity for our communities, especially for those most vulnerable. To learn how you can help identify if someone is taking shelter in a bin and take preventive steps, please share and download our 'People In and Around Bins' poster with your colleagues here: https://bit.ly/3PSNQrT

DEFRA has today provided an update on Simpler Recycling regulations in England. Biffa CEO, Michael Topham said: "We have been working hard to achieve a seamless transition for Simpler Recycling which is critical to kickstarting stagnant recycling rates in the UK and a vital next step on the journey to a circular economy. So it is positive to have the final detail from DEFRA on this important regulatory change as we prepare to go live in April, only 4 months away. It is also reassuring to know that collecting and processing fibre can be done as part of dry, mixed recycling where collecting it separately would not be environmentally or economically practical. This will help to ensure Simpler Recycling fulfils the objective of simplifying recycling. Our focus now is to work closely with our customers to make Simpler Recycling a success."
