'Zero energy' hotel! Sustainability tourism is gaining traction in Singapore and globally. As more tourists today embrace responsible travelling, it is inevitable that the hospitality industry needs to integrate the philosophy and practice of sustainability into their properties to attract this growing segment of tourists. This will be a key attribute that many hotels will build into their brand identity. Particularly in Singapore, as more hotels intergrate sustainability practices and features into their development, it will reinforce Singapore as a sustainable tourism destination as well. Furthermore, with Hotel Indigo located at Changi Airport, it is definitely sending a strong signal that Singapore is indeed a sustainable tourism destination. Although Hotel Indigo's new development may come across as a novelty, in time to come, sustainable hotels such as this will soon become a norm. Chinese travellers are leading the charge in a continued rebound of international travel, exemplified in the second quarter by more than 1.5 million Chinese travellers leaving on outbound trips. The top destinations for Chinese travellers still included traditional favourites like Singapore (15.6%), Thailand (13.8%), Malaysia (12%), Japan (11.7%), and South Korea (11.5%). Global business travel back on track lifted by China: A new report from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) showed that business travel is set to surpass pre-pandemic levels this year, faster than previously predicted, to reach a record 1.5 trillion U.S. dollars as China is posed to overtake the United States as the world’s biggest travel and tourism market in the next few years. I'm fascinated by all-inclusive hospitality after visiting Club Med with my family and found someone who could give us the behind-the-scenes story on how this business works: Sabrina Cendral, who visited Club Med often as a kid, ended up working for the company and then worked her way up to SVP of Marketing & Sales. A few things that stood out to me talking with Sabrina: 1) All-inclusive hospitality is powerful for unlocking the promise of travel to transform you because you're not thinking about how much activities will cost - you can do whatever sounds fun 2) For people working at Club Med and businesses like it, all-inclusive hospitality is cool because you have the chance to work in multiple roles—often within the same day. I talked with a number of team members who worked in the restaurant in the morning and then participated in an acrobatics show at night. It seems like a fun life! 3) This cross-training can accelerate career development. Sabrina told me there's not a Club Med GM who didn't start in one of the front-line positions, which I imagine is very important for building culture.
