Domestic Students

Domestic undergraduate students enrolled in six or more credit hours per semester and full-time domestic graduate students are required to obtain adequate health insurance (see exceptions).

Student Health Insurance Plan

Review complete information about the Student Health Insurance Plan offered by Aetna Student Health in the annual brochureThe annual premium for the health insurance plan offered through the Student Health Service is added to each student's fees.

Students must actively attend classes for at least the first 31 days (unless an official medical withdrawal has been approved by the Student Health Service) after the date for which coverage is purchased in order to remain eligible for the insurance plan. Non-degree-seeking, non-credit courses, home-study correspondence, Internet and television classes, and evening or weekend-only programs or courses do not fulfill the eligibility requirements.

Waiving the University-Sponsored Plan

Domestic students with adequate healthcare coverage of their own can request to waive the University-sponsored insurance. However, students with limited out-of-area coverage or otherwise inadequate coverage are urged to carefully review their options before requesting to waive this plan. Starting Fall 2024 all new students (including transfer students) with Out-of-State HMO/EPO plans do not meet the criteria for waiver unless the policy provides comprehensive health benefits beyond emergency and urgent care during the time that you will attend the University of Miami in the Miami area.

Health insurance waivers must be submitted every fall semester.

Waiver Deadlines

  • Fall semester: July 15
  • Spring semester: January 10
  • Summer session: April 25

Submitting a Waiver Request

Students (or their designee) must submit a waiver request via the Aetna student portal. To submit your waiver, please have your EMPLID, date of birth, and current health insurance ID card ready.

Students will receive a waiver approval or denial based on their insurance coverage within 5 business days of their submission.

Reinstating the University-Sponsored Plan

Students who previously waived the Student Health Insurance Plan for the fall semester can reinstate it prior to the spring semester by completing the reinstatement request form and checklist prior to March 5.

Similarly, students can reinstate the University-sponsored plan within 30 days of terminating other similar coverage by completing the reinstatement request form and checklist. Documentation of termination may be requested.

Coverage can be reinitiated at the start of the fall semester simply by choosing not to waive the plan for that year.

Please do not consider your reinstatement complete until reinstatement has been verified via CaneLink, the charge has been posted to your student account, and all charges on your account have been paid.
