There are two fundamental constraints to Retail Media Networks (RMNs): Audience Size: RMNs and retargeting are closely related because they both depend on a finite audience—namely, the visitors to a retailer's website. This naturally limits the growth potential for both strategies. Just like retargeting, where effectiveness is capped by the number of users already engaging with a brand, RMNs are constrained by the traffic to the retailer’s ecosystem. If fewer people visit the site, the available audience for RMN ads shrinks, which in turn can reduce revenue, assuming a constant return on ad spend (ROAS). While expanding to offline shoppers or using lookalike audiences can increase reach, performance may not be as strong. Performance (Incrementality): The second key issue is incrementality—or rather, the lack of it. Serving an ad through an RMN doesn’t necessarily result in a new, incremental sale. Many of these ads reach shoppers who likely would have purchased the product anyway. This mirrors the problem with retargeting: when ads primarily reach people who are already inclined to buy, the impact of the ad spend diminishes. Advertisers are becoming more aware that increasing their RMN budget doesn’t always translate into a corresponding rise in sales. In the early days of RMNs, or even before they were called RMNs I had the honor of working with HookLogic, Inc. (Acquired by Criteo in 2016) advertisers were eager to spend more because ROAS was so high. But when budgets weren’t fully spent, the solution became offsite retargeting. Any change from an measurement standpoint on the advertiser side can cause a step up or down in spend. What’s keeping Singaporean 🇸🇬 Marketers and Advertisers up at night, and where will the investment focus 💰 be for 2025? The Yahoo Advertising (SEA) Digital Marketers Pulse study, conducted in collaboration with global market research company Milieu Insight shines a light on what the industry is really thinking and raises some big questions too… Here's the research 🔍 - 4 min read https://lnkd.in/gYNnns9r Points of note for me ( these are only 3 of the many insights we uncovered) 🌱 61% told us they are prioritising performance marketing over brand-building, with only 30% intending to focus on brand marketing in 2025. Let the debate begin here about the importance of brand building over time combined with online performance Vs performance only. 🏪 Only 21% of respondents ‘fully utilise’ online first-party customer data (eg: achieving best practice for audience targeting, measurement and attribution) and a mere 11% use offline customer data to its full potential. Meaning very few advertisers are connecting Data Culture to Audience Strategy and Ad Effectiveness, essentially closing the loop to give consumers a wholistic CX. 📉 73% of respondents said cost-effectiveness and transparency was a top priority, with reporting and performance measurement at 64%. With this in mind Yahoo is re-investing cost savings from performance outcomes back into campaigns with Blueprint AI vs simply lining pockets. Today marks the day of 6 years at Klook! Lots of organisations claim they have a "growth mindset" but what really drives it? I've tried to distill what goes into the formula for creating such a culture from my time at Klook. This list is by no means exhaustive but my thoughts so far: 1. autonomy & speed - you need to let your employees test, fail, learn quickly, try again, succeed, scale. Because we are in Sydney (and the major offices are in HK/SG) I think this partly naturally happened, where we are trusted as the local experts in our market - but it was also by design. If you have partnered or worked with us you will know, the set up we have at Klook is not conventional. Most OTAs have their marketing teams centralised in HQ. 2. visionaries - you need people in the company that are always thinking about the future and mentoring the leaders (and you need to give these people time to think 😂 ). Marcus Yong looking at you! 3. healthy competition - not just from external in observing the industry, but between internal teams and departments. The key word here is "healthy", unrealistic benchmarking is not fun for anyone. 4. performance-based incentives - this one seems obvious, but in our team we recognise the fact that our product is travel (and we love travelling), so try to attach this wherever we can to learning & skill development opportunities for high performers. Turns out, Sword Health has an interesting org structure where they hire ex-founders/wannabe founders as GMs, invest $1 million as a seed round, and give them 12 months to work. If the product performs well after a year, they follow up with a Series A investment. We do something similar at Docquity, and each time, the products have generated quite a bit of value for the organization in a fraction of the time it usually takes. In my humble view, this is the only way to create urgency and build value from 0 to 1 as a company matures. h/t Nikhil Krishnan
