As most folks are talking about a #stock market bubble, I thought it would be interesting to revisit the famous #Minsky model which explains the 5 stages of a #marketbubble. 1. Displacement: primarily a shift in market sentiment; can be a result of advancements in technology, changes in interest rates or innovations. 2. Boom: prices start to increase at a steady rate before attracting the attention of the media and setting the stage for a boom phase. As demand continues to rise, speculation keeps driving prices higher. 3. Euphoria: peak of the bubble when prices skyrocket and reach unsustainable levels setting irrational exuberance. Prices continue to rise with speculators expecting the momentum to continue. 4. Profit-taking: prices begin to fall, some investors may decide to take profits, increasing selling pressure. As prices are pushed lower with the unwinding of positions, market sentiment turns negative. 5. Panic: fear spreads as media headlines warn of doom and gloom, and demand continues to falter. Coming to the present situation, here are some facts about SME IPO's which makes me believe we are definitely in the "euphoria" stage: 1. 169 SME's have IPO'd this year (5 months to go!) vs 182 in 2023, 109 in 2022 and 54 in 2019 (ignoring the covid years). The previous time such large no of SME's IPO'd was 141 in 2018. 2. These 169 SME IPO's were oversubscribed an avg of 290 times 🤯 vs the 51 mainboard IPO's this year which were subscribed an avg of 29 times. 3. Following are the top 5 oversubscribed IPO's: - HOAC Foods, a ~10 outlet grocery company in NCR with brand name "Hari Om Atta Chakki" with ~15 Cr revenue- 2556x - Fonebox Retail, a multi-brand retailer of mobile handsets & home appliances with 150+ outlets in Gujarat and ~300Cr revenue- 2066x - Koura Fine Diamond Jewelry Limited, a gold & diamond jewelry wholesaler from Ahmedabad with 36 Cr revenue- 1534x - Amkay Products Limited, a medical equipment manufacturer (facemasks, nebulizers, adult diaper, thermometers etc) with ~30 Cr revenue - 1340x - Kay Cee Energy & Infra Limited, a transmission tower EPC company from Rajasthan with ~60Cr revenue- 1311x I am not against SME's tapping public markets but the amount of frenzy we are seeing from retail investors is crazy. From tulip mania in the 17th century to the GFC in 2007-08, every boom-burst cycle is essentially driven by greed and ends with the same outcome, although the market participants keep believing that this time it is different. The conversations at Saastr last year predicted how the GTM tech market unfolded over the next year. Saastr is a microcosm of people who live in the future and are on the cutting edge. Back then, the excitement was around using AI to automate high volume emails, by taking a page from the pioneers of this approach at Brex, Rippling, and Ramp. It wasn't obvious, but the trend was there if you paid close attention. In retrospect, it took me another 3 to 6 months to realize it, just as the first "AI SDRs" started to become mainstream. This year, I came prepared. I had 50+ conversations with cutting-edge startups and GTM leaders about the future of sales. The takeaway: the market overshot on the promise of AI SDRs. Now, the puck shifted to better targeting using AI, and copilots as the frame of reference for high-quality automation. My sense is we'll see this become mainstream over the next year, as each sales tech vendor launches their interpretation. IMO, I'm not sold on the idea of a copilots long-term. It feels like a crutch for the market to get comfortable with agents taking actions on their behalf. Just like lane assist vs. full self driving, I suspect we'll get back to end-to-end outbound automation. This time, it'll be with better targeting and a deep appreciation of the nuance necessary for thoughtful outbound. Anyone else at Saastr (or otherwise) have thoughts?

So its official TRUMP is the POTUS again. This time with resounding victory. As of now 2:36AM PST on Wed 6th Nov 2024. TRUMP has 277 votes while Kamala has 224 and you need 270 to win. Which was being called as closely contested election is a clean sweep by Trump. So much for the analytics and media getting it right. Until it happens, its all probability! Interesting points to note is this time around House and Senate will also be be dominated by Republicans. Lets see if US can be Great again? So where does the stock market open today mornings, will they go up? I think so stonk to the moon $$$$ Will the wars stop? Interesting times to watch. Will layoffs stop, I hope they do if he makes hiring USC over international talent a necessity here. #D2C Brands: #QuickCommerce—A Game-Changer or a Threat? Over the last 1-2 years, I’ve been urging D2C brands to embrace Quick Commerce (QC). Today, it’s no longer optional—it’s the most transformative shift in consumer behavior since marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart emerged. If you still have the relationships and the window, this is land-grab time! How Did We Get Here? The Early Marketplace Era (Amazon/Flipkart): • These platforms disrupted traditional distribution, creating challenges for legacy brands. Sales attribution, conflicting regional offers, and the alienation of local distributors made it hard for older players to adapt - while customers were loving the home delivery (behaviour change #convenience over #familiarity) • Challenger brands thrived: Delivering to 1-2 locations with monthly POs, better margins, and national visibility. Marketplaces made them discoverable, even if delivery took 2-3 days (customers were still happy). The Shift to Quick Commerce: • QC has redefined online retail, emphasizing speed, convenience, and instant availability (huge change / #convenience over #novelty). • Unlike marketplaces, QC tilts the game in favor of older brands, thanks to: - Multiple delivery points engaging local distributors. - Weekly POs and instant stock replenishment, a system legacy players already excel at. - Profitable unit economics, making QC sustainable for established players. What Does This Mean for D2C Brands? The channel that once gave challenger brands a platform is now leveling the playing field—and if D2C brands don’t act fast, legacy players will reclaim dominance. Why? • QC’s dark store model stocks limited options, prioritizing what’s available fastest. • Customers won’t wait—they’ll pick brands they recognize or that are ready to deliver within minutes. Lessons from Abroad #Gorillas (Europe), a QC pioneer, opened doors for newer, niche brands. But legacy FMCG giants quickly leveraged their deep supply chains to stock dark stores at scale. With faster fulfillment, they edged out smaller brands, proving that in QC, availability and recall trump novelty. #Deliveroo (UK) disrupted grocery shopping with its Deliveroo Hop service, promising 10-minute deliveries. While niche brands initially gained visibility, large FMCG players reclaimed dominance, consistently stocking shelves to match consumer demand for speed. The result? Brands that couldn’t match delivery speed and availability lost ground—no matter how innovative they were. How Can #D2C Brands Win? To stay ahead in QC: • Be Available: If you’re not listed, you don’t exist. • Scale Inventory: Deliver weekly POs (or faster!) and meet QC’s demands for instant replenishment. • Leverage Speed: Build fulfillment systems that mirror legacy efficiency but with challenger agility. QC offers a window of opportunity for agile D2C brands—but that window is closing fast. It’s time to scale up or risk losing your spot to legacy giants. What’s Your Take?

Over the last couple of years we have been witnessing a move away from Large Language Models (LLMs) towards Small Language Models (SLM) that are a lot more efficient and context specific. Retail Domain Language Models (RLMs) have the potential to transform the eCommerce customer journey. As always, it’s never a binary choice. In fact, LLMs can be a great starting point since they provide an enhanced semantic understanding of the world at large: they can be used to mine structured information (e.g., product attributes and values) out of unstructured data (e.g., product descriptions), create baseline domain knowledge (e.g, manufacturer-brand mappings), augment information (e.g., image to prompt), and create first cut training datasets. Finetuned RLMs can then solve a variety of specific problems efficiently with great accuracy at scale. Some use cases that come to mind: Optimized Product Page Content: Benchmark content, identify and enrich content to fill gaps. Optimize/rewrite parts or the whole of PDP content towards improving discoverability and conversion on the Digital Shelf. Generate personalized, localized, or seasonal content. Sentiment analysis of competitors' products leading to recommended product features and talking points to be highlighted. AI Agents for Enhanced Search Experience: As a new paradigm in search emerges – based more on intent and outcome, powered by natural language queries and GenAI based Search Agents – the capability to create complete catalog information and rich semantics becomes increasingly critical. E.g., “weekend breakfast basket” or “Saturday night house party” “shopping for 7 yo’s birthday” over “bread”, “milk”, “chips”, “soda” and so forth. Advanced Assortment Analytics: Automatically find finegrained gaps in assortment with semantic search capability and an enhanced understanding of business relevance. For instance, if you are a large Office Supplies retailer, you will be able to figure out that, “You have a good selection of paper clips, but you are missing out on designer paper clips, here are some sample products ...". You will be able to match synonyms ("sneakers" = "running shoes", "rose gold" ~ "pink"), compare despite brand specific terminology ("Retina Display" = High-Resolution Display), and deal with ambiguities. What is common between #Apple, #Lego, #Google (SE) and #Ikea? As these companies continue to build a billion-dollar topline each with enviable gross margins, one can ponder how they are able to extract so much value. Well, to extract value, they first need to create value. And our first-hand experience with these companies or rather their products teach us one thing- their Great Product designs. Think of iPhone or Logo blocks or Ikea furniture. The way these products are designed just makes it so convenient for the user to use them thus creating higher perceived value. And the business models of these companies ensure they extract a part of this value created. In short, a great design, whether product or the value chain, creates great value for the customers and allows the company to extract value for itself.
