A few weeks ago someone who should have known better asked me about the diesel used in wind turbines. After a short, stunned silence I asked if they meant the carbon that was used in the manufacture of the turbines - not an unreasonable question as everything has its carbon cost. But no, the question referred to the "diesel used to make the blades rotate*". It would be easy to laugh - and or cry - but the exchange exposes an issue that underpins the impact of misinformation and disinformation: simple ignorance. Nobody really knows how renewables work, and if you take that as a baseline and then flood the discourse with stories about whales, birds, subsidies and conspiracy theories about net zero you have a serious problem. And one manifestation of this problem is that the renewables industry is held to a higher standard than others - an extreme form of whataboutery. (Whatabout the steel, whatabout the shipping... and so on). It is encouraging to see the industry addressing this, and I have the greatest of respect for those involved in this initiative and they are best placed to address it and will have my wholehearted support. But as with so many of these issues I'm always worried we're bringing a butter knife to a gun fight. We all need to do more. (* It is wind that rotates the blades)

Bittersweet moment as the Gastech 2024 co-chairs wrap up the conference. It’s been a great one this year. My takeaway is that the event this year was characterised by a mood of urgency around the need to take action to secure energy supply while balancing that with progress on decarbonisation and #natgas and #LNG is the most effective route to achieving this.

Singapore and Indonesia make substantive progress on electricity imports Yesterday during the Indonesia Sustainability Forum, some exciting news emerged about the import energy into Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA) has granted Conditional Licences to the five companies that have previously obtained Conditional Approvals and they are: - Pacific Medco Solar Energy Pte Ltd = 0.6GW - Adaro Solar International Pte Ltd =0.4GW - EDP Renewables APAC = 0.4GW - Vanda RE Pte Ltd= 0.3GW - Keppel Energy Pte Ltd Additionally, EMA will grant Conditional Approvals to two new projects to import 1.4 GW of low-carbon electricity from Indonesia to Singapore. - Singa Renewables Pte Ltd, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and RGE = 1GW - Shell Eastern Trading (Pte.) Ltd, in partnership with Vena Energy = 0.4GW Great to see that Singapore has raised its ambition and seek to import 6 GW ( it was 4GW previously) by 2035. Low-carbon electricity imports are part of Singapore’s overall efforts to decarbonise the power sector, which currently accounts for about 40% of the nation’s carbon emissions. #sustainbility #renewableenergy #energyimports

We wrapped up our 2nd Singapore Carbon Market & Investor Forum and associated workshop on Friday. It brought together key stakeholders from government, industry, non-profit and others to debate aspects of the theme of 'Fostering international linkages and investment'. Key speakers from across the Asia Pacific region highlighted the activities and collaboration underway to deliver effective, high-impact climate solutions.
