💫 How Self-Care Impacts Our Mental Wellness Self-care is crucial for maintaining mental wellness, yet we often put ourselves last. Especially parents and caregivers. Finding even five minutes to quiet our minds amidst the hustle and constant communication seems impossible. Continuous stress takes a toll on our health, leading to physical illness or mental and emotional strain. Often, mental health is the last to receive attention. Top 5 tips for achieving ultimate mental wellness: 1. Practice Daily Gratitude. Begin each day with just a few minutes of gratitude. Find 3–5 things to be grateful for. They can be small or large. Something as simple as the cup of coffee in your hand to the health of your family. Simply saying thank you for the things we tend to take for granted every day can shift how we see our lives and how we feel about our lives. 2. Eat regularly. Eat small, nutritious meals every 2–3 hours throughout the day. Our bodies need good fuel to function well and so do our brains. Often busy people who do not prioritize their self-care will sacrifice a basic human need, food. Eating becomes inconvenient. 3. Hydration. It’s as simple as drinking 60–80oz of water per day. We have all read countless health articles advocating for drinking more water. And yet, we don’t do it. Hydration is often ignored when the busyness, the hustle, and the needs of others take over. One of the best things you can do for yourself today is to fill a large glass of water and keep refilling it throughout the day. 4. Sleep. It is vital. Establishing good sleep practices are necessary for radical self-care. With a lack of sleep comes a reduced ability to think clearly, reduced reaction time, a steady feeling of fatigue. Our norm should be a consistent practice of 7–8 hours of sleep every night. With a predictable evening and morning routine. If situations arise that throw off this routine we should strive to return back to our usual habit as soon as possible. Try putting the phone away, and turning the tv off an hour earlier tonight just to see the difference it makes tomorrow. 5. Set boundaries. Know what is important to you. Get clarity around what this is. You owe yourself clarity around what is important to you. I suggest you journal this out. Do not edit, just write out what matters to you and set boundaries around protecting that. If it is your family block out that time. If it is exercise, block it out. All of the practices above, block them out. Practice saying no to people or situations. I promise you will survive! Know that every time you say yes to someone or something you are saying no to someone or something else and that someone you are saying no to is usually you. As a psychologist, I have been working with men for over 3 decades. So I have become quite familiar with the Man Box which is the way in which we learn the rules of what it means to be a real man. This includes rules such as hide your emotions, always be tough, exert control over women and don’t ask for help. We police ourselves by insulting each other’s sexuality and masculinity in blatant attempts of manipulation. What we don’t realize is that this path leads to anger, depression and loneliness. In my own journey, I have overcome all of these major difficult emotions. I recently lost my 23 year old son to fentanyl. I am tired of losing good men. One of the biggest issues I have with the man box is that we become cut off from 2/3rds of our emotions, leaving most of us with anger as our primary emotion. When we are angry, we externalize all blame onto “the other.” This externalization combined with our need to be “right” gives away our power & cuts us off from any possibility of introspection & growth. This is a dangerous place from which to live. Anger fuels the indignant belief that we are 100% right and the other is wrong. It cuts us off from the possibility of repair, reconciliation & inclusivity, and thus it separates us from the possibility of happiness and contentment. Here are a few of the stats to back this up... CIGNA’s 2020 study reports 63% of men report struggling with loneliness. The World Health Organization in 2020 found that 81% of violent offenses were done by men. Men die 7-10 years earlier than women. And 75% of the differences here have been attributed to the Man Box. Men abuse alcohol and drugs more than women. According to a 2017 report, we abuse illegal drugs of every kind twice as much as women. It is time to evolve beyond the Man Box for the betterment of our individual health and happiness, as well as that of those we love. I recently witnessed a speaker deliver a 90-min webinar. As he progressed with the session, I could see the number of people dropping out. In 45mins, the number of participants was down by 3/4. 7.5 out of 10 participants had left within 45mins. Why? The speaker lacked Brevity. ❌ He used long and complex sentences ❌ Tried to tell everything ❌ Had too many slides and too much text ❌ Kept repeating his sentences ❌ Shared so little of value in so much time; etc. As a speaker, Brevity is non-negotiable. Navigating Difficult Relationships: Building #Resilience Everyone has that one person who gets under our skin. The one person who raises our #anxiety levels just by hearing their name. Unfortunately, this person often plays a significant role in our lives, such as a parent, loved one, or someone we've looked up to our entire lives. So, what happens when you realize their actions are causing turmoil in your life, yet you can't just cut them loose and move on? There are steps you can take to alleviate some of the pain and better manage the remaining stress. This is what resilience building is. 1. Draw the Line in the Sand:The first step is to protect your mental and physical well-being by deciding where to set #boundaries. These boundaries are your protective wall, guiding you on when to walk away and when to engage. 2. #Communicate Clearly: No matter how difficult, you must communicate your boundaries to the person they are meant to protect you from. You cannot expect someone to respect your boundaries if they don’t know what they are. Be consistent and firm, or those boundaries will quickly be trampled. 3. #Reflect and Adjust: Don’t dwell on the past, but do analyze and reflect on negative interactions. Adjust your boundaries as necessary. You may falter, but get right back on that beach and draw the line deeper. These steps will ensure that you grow, and hopefully, so will the person pushing your limits. Your boundaries will also teach them how to better interact with others. "𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩!" These are the words I often hear from my coaching clients and participants in my workshops. Accompanying words could be: 𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭... 𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨... 𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦... 𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘺... 𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴... Can you relate to any of these? Whenever I hear this... 💔 A part of my heart breaks for them 💡 Yet another part believes this is data for further reflection and healing Let me break it down further. 💔 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱, 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. I feel that when people receive the "you're too _____", they feel invalidated, and as a result they may do 1 of 2 things: 1͟)͟ ͟S͟u͟b͟c͟o͟n͟s͟c͟i͟o͟u͟s͟l͟y͟ ͟p͟u͟l͟l͟ ͟b͟a͟c͟k͟ ͟t͟o͟ ͟r͟e͟f͟r͟a͟i͟n͟ ͟f͟r͟o͟m͟ ͟a͟f͟f͟e͟c͟t͟i͟n͟g͟ ͟o͟t͟h͟e͟r͟s͟ Some recent examples include: → A woman who doesn't want to come across as intimidating at work → Another woman who doesn't express her emotions because she don't want to be seen by her boyfriend as too emotional. → A man who doesn't share about his needs to his wife because he didn't want to come across as "too needy" 2͟)͟ ͟O͟v͟e͟r͟c͟o͟m͟p͟e͟n͟s͟a͟t͟e͟ ͟a͟n͟d͟ ͟b͟e͟c͟o͟m͟e͟ ͟e͟v͟e͟n͟ ͟m͟o͟r͟e͟ ͟i͟n͟t͟e͟n͟s͟e͟ When people feel unheard, they become even louder. They over-explain, they become more vociferous in their communications, they flood their communications with emotions. This has the exact opposite effect. People tune them out even more. This segues into the next part. 💡 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 First of all, everyone is entitled to be emotional, intense, ambitious, needy. When people say "you're too ____", it is a 2-way street: • Are people intimidated by you because they are insecure themselves? • Are you too ambitious for them because their ambitions lie elsewhere? • Is "you're too needy" just blaming your needs because they actually want to say "your needs are beyond my capacity to provide?" Having said that, I believe that the most important thing is to r͟e͟f͟l͟e͟c͟t͟ ͟o͟n͟ ͟y͟o͟u͟r͟s͟e͟l͟f͟ ͟i͟f͟ ͟t͟h͟e͟r͟e͟'͟s͟ ͟a͟ ͟l͟e͟s͟s͟o͟n͟ ͟t͟o͟ ͟b͟e͟ ͟l͟e͟a͟r͟n͟t͟ ͟h͟e͟r͟e͟? Are your needs, ambitions, intensity, emotionality a form of overcompensation or indulgence? Let me give you some examples: • A person who is emotionally indulgent will dump his/her emotions on others. • An intense person who intimidates may be hiding an internal insecurity. • Being overly ambitious may be a function of deep shame about being "not good enough." It is through healing our wounds, and turning them into spiritual gifts, that would render our expression valuable. How you show up in the world will then have a positive impact. • Ambitious people can be inspiring • Powerful people empower others • Neediness becomes vulnerability So the next time you're told "you're too ___", embrace this as a gift for growth! #WholeHearted #Healing

Perfectionists tend to hoard ideas, plans, and goals, afraid that leaving something behind means failing. They grip these things tightly, squeezing the life out of both their ideas and themselves. They hold onto ideas, goals and things that perhaps sounded interesting once upon a time. They cling to things that were working or thought they should be doing because they thought someone else hinted at it. Because if they didn't manage to make it work, if they can't keep juggling these projects, if they didn't bring that idea to fruition, it must be because they didn't work hard enough. Because they weren't good enough. Because they weren't enough. It comes at a cost. Because when you're holding onto things that aren't quite working for you anymore or ideas that have run their course, the less space there is for you to do something else. The less space there is for you to be creative or come up with new ideas or to simply have enough space in your life to be. Letting go isn't about dropping things. It's about using 1% less effort or allowing ourselves to be supported 1% more. It's about gently relaxing our muscular grip, starting with our bodies. Try it now - relax your jaw a little, soften your gaze, and lean into the support of the chair. Next time you find yourself gripping tightly onto something, take a moment to pause. Breathe. And remember that letting go doesn't have to be scary. It can be as simple as relaxing your jaw a little or softening your gaze. Enjoy what I share? There are several common misconceptions about coaching that are important to clear up. Coaching is not the same as therapy or counseling. While there may be some overlap in techniques, the context, focus and goals are distinct. Coaching focuses on improving leadership performance, career development and achievement of goals within an organizational context. Coaching is also not a quick fix, but rather a powerful engagement to help leaders grow and shift behavior over time. Our beliefs. How we can shape it or be shaped by it. 😮 Thursday evening has become a weekly highlight for me. It’s the day when I attend Matthew Koh (MAPPCP, ICF PCC) class on Applied Positive Psychology. Last Thursday was special.   We had Simon Leow, the co-founder of a local social enterprise Happiness Initiative, as a guest. (website in comment) It was fascinating to learn about his work on promoting well-being skills in Singapore. But it was the specially designed Positive Psychology games that caught my attention most! 🌟 One of the games ‘Let’s Unpack This’, requires us to select 2 cards: One that best describes a strong emotion we experienced in the week.  Another that represents our beliefs related to that situation. We are given 2 minutes to describe our beliefs and how they influenced how we felt. I selected 2 pairs of cards. Each represents a positive and negative emotion I had that week. As I looked at my cards, I was struck by how my beliefs could have affected my emotions.   𝗦𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱?  𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳𝘀? We develop beliefs from our past experiences. Beliefs are not facts. Yet they affect our emotions. For instance, if a person’s action/words had triggered a negative feeling in the past, this forms a belief. We might associate a similar act in future as negative and evoke a similar bad emotion. Through Simon’s sharing, I learned that the first step in changing our beliefs is awareness and recognizing how they are affecting our emotions. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳𝘀: 1.     Write down your existing negative beliefs. 2.     Find clear evidence that supports these beliefs. 3.     Recognize how they are affecting your emotions. 4.     Write down the new beliefs that you wish to adopt. 5.     Practice and build evidence to support your new beliefs. As James Clear noted, ‘The more evidence you have for a belief, the more strongly you will believe it.’ So, let's shape our beliefs. The validity of assessments...I recently retook the Clifton Strengthsfinder assessment. Have you taken it? My talented buddy Kristi Haivala kindly set me up with a test and helped me interpret the results. THANK YOU Kristi!! Apparently, my top 5 are: Responsibility Harmony Maximizer Relator Futuristic But I also have Discipline and Intellection in my top 10. I guess there were no huge surprises. It was fascinating to read about some of the 'helps' and 'hinders' aspects of the Relator theme from the Clifton Strengthsfinder site, including: Helps: Your authenticity makes you someone people naturally trust. You keep confidences well, and as such, you can be a guide, adviser and mentor. Hinders: Because relationships take time, you can be slow to warm to others. This can give you the reputation of being aloof and unapproachable. Apparently the chances that two people share the same top 5 in identical order are one in 33 million!
