New podcast 🚀 How this regional fintech approaches growth from payments differently We've been able to document the journey of ⁠Fazz all the way back since our call in 2020 with Hendra Kwik, to our most recent conversation with Tianwei Liu on StraitsX in 2024. Today, we're joined by another leader from Fazz, Mark Hew, the Business Unit head for Payments and Agent Network in Indonesia. In part one of our conversation with him, he talks about Fazz’s evolution as a company: 1️⃣ Evolution from professionalization to consolidation. Mark shares how his first few years in the company were spent transitioning “from a startup into a professional organization, focusing on systems, processes, and cadence.”   Today, Fazz is well into what Mark calls the “consolidation phase.” Fazz has started to “consciously align different parts of the organization, identifying core strengths and creating a competitive advantage moving forward.” The competitive advantage moving forward has been increasingly defined around payment infrastructure. “Our infrastructure actually serves some of the big names in Indonesia, like Blibli, Brick, Bukalapak, and Flip.” 2️⃣ Evolution into a payments infrastructure company. Fazz’s core has always been in payments. Looking ahead into what Mark calls the company’s “expansion phase”, Fazz is expanding their services into “as many customer segments as possible.”  🎙️ “For instance, a company from China or the U.S. wanting to enter Southeast Asia could partner with us, and we would provide them access to the entire region. This horizontal expansion also includes the Web3 world. You get access not only to fiat transactions but also to the Web3 world, which transcends national boundaries.” 3️⃣ Evolution at a “Fazz” pace. Staying focused on their own growth came in different forms. Amidst the tech fundraising market boom in 2020/2021 and bust through to today, Fazz remains focused on maturing its business. 🎙️ “Looking back, we definitely think we made the right call to stay on course and exercise financial prudence while growing at a more moderate pace.” Amidst fintech expanding around rebundling financial services, Fazz remains focused on “horizontal growth by leveraging their core strength in payment infrastructure.” And this company’s unique position in the market is what has kept Mark going throughout his growth in the company. 🎙️ “It's not very often that you get to do something that is more socially impact-driven, focusing on the agent business in Indonesia, while also pushing the forefront of technology in Singapore.” Watch the full episode: https://lnkd.in/eb9Fr3br 📸 Mark Hew

The eKYC process took some time, but the potential returns made it a worthwhile endeavor. On that note, here's why I believe eKYC is important: 1. Security First: eKYC safeguards both the customer and the company from fraud. It's a win-win for a secure financial future. 2. Frictionless Future: While the initial setup might take a while, eKYC paves the way for a smoother, faster experience down the line. 3. Personalized Perks: Companies focused on customer-centricity prioritize a personalized journey. eKYC is key to unlocking those benefits. Aeon Bank seems to understand the value proposition for users. Their user-friendly app makes eKYC manageable, and their competitive rates (3.88% returns, unlimited savings) are a clear advantage. By 2025, 84% of Southeast Asians are projected to use digital wallets. 👇🏼 A key driver of wallet use in APAC is the fact that providers have managed to create value for both merchants and consumers. For instance, at GCash, users can make transfers to other users for free, and merchants pay a low 2% fee for scan-to-pay QR transactions. Similarly, Alipay offers its users a financially appealing solution with minimal to no fees for everyday transactions conducted with Alipay Balance. For withdrawals or transfers to bank accounts, users pay a modest 0.1% fee for values over RMB 20,000. And for merchants, Alipay charges a 0.55% transaction fee, roughly half the fee for processing local credit cards. Ultimately, users of these wallets have a large part of their financial and digital consumption activities mediated by the super apps, allowing companies to accumulate a valuable amount of data about their consumers. This data is then used to enhance their monetization strategies and increase wallets’ capacity to cross-sell all these products and services. One of the results of such a finely tuned strategy is that, over time, digital wallets have eaten up credit and debit card volumes in APAC. In fact, even when cards are the ultimate funding source of the transaction conducted via a wallet, customers’ brand recognition leans towards the wallet, not the card provider, which further exacerbates the perception that wallets are quickly taking over.

[Published in February 2024] 🚖 Grab and GoTo, Southeast Asia's ride-hailing giants, are reportedly discussing a merger again, with possibilities of Grab acquiring GoTo through cash and share deals. 💰 With GoTo's market valuation at about half of Grab's, and both firms showing improved financial health, the timing might seem ripe for a merger. However, regulatory and market consolidation concerns present significant hurdles. 📊 While merging could lead to massive savings and a dominant market position, integrating two huge competitors would involve navigating complex regulatory approvals and aligning distinct corporate cultures.
