IS THE FUTURE OF RETAIL A BLEND TRANSFORMATIONAL AND TRANSACTIONAL EXPERIENCES? I absolutely love this hidden gem—a delightful educational (and, of course, social) experience tucked away on the top floor of a shopping mall in Singapore. Kudos to Titan Tech Academy for pulling it off. Transformational experiences, where we engage, learn, and grow, are among the most powerful tools for building trust, loyalty, and, dare I say, a sense of belonging. But it does make one wonder: is this the future of retail? It’s curious, isn’t it, that technology brands and retailers—Apple being the notable exception— struggle to seamlessly integrate these kinds of experiences into their own formats as profitable, revenue-generating ventures. When you tie educational experiences to product interactions, suddenly the act of purchasing becomes something far more meaningful—an artefact of a memorable experience rather than just a transaction. There’s a vast reservoir of untapped potential here that retailers seem to be overlooking. What happens when we put Generative AI into the hands of elderly individuals who have no design background? We explored this intriguing possibility with five senior citizens for Singapore Design Week. If you're in Singapore, come see this exhibition at the National Design Centre before it wraps up. At times, this endeavour felt nearly impossible, yet this unusual experiment has blossomed into one of my favourite projects. Today, I'm excited to share part one of five with you, which features the remarkable collaboration between Winnie Lim and her 82-year-old aunt, Mdm Yee Hoat Sang. If you haven’t used it this way, AI proves to be exceptionally effective for co-design; it not only stimulates recall but also encourages the sharing of insightful life stories better than many traditional participatory methods. What excites me most about Generative AI is how it allows us to tap into the imaginations and concerns of individuals who might otherwise remain silent or distant from the innovation process. Amidst so many different tools, we’re also increasingly discovering that Hypersketch excels in enabling everyday individuals to intuitively engage with AI for meaningful creative exploration—making it possible to collaborate with both the elderly and schoolchildren alike. Over the past two decades (yes, I am as old as Gandalf!), my experiences working in and out of Asia has revealed a common pitfall among Western leaders and businesses – leaning on outdated assumptions about the region too many times to count. Unfortunately there’s still a mindset that 'West is best' - which is both elitist and patronizing. However, the real growth in business, which is now flourishing in Asia, from India to SEA to China is not just in GDP growth but also in innovation, and creativity. As quick examples- By 2030, Asia’s fintech revenues are expected to be bigger than North America’s. And Asia is projected to unlock 43% ($4.3 trillion) of the $10.1 trillion revenue opportunity available in other areas. In a global role, there's no one-size-fits-all thing called ‘best’ as an approach anyway imo. Ranking and comparisons hinder objectivity but I get it is a very human DNA thing that people like to do. Instead, embrace differences, identify areas for success, and seize opportunities. Looking East, its an exciting time for the potential for brands to expand westward. With the recent shift in the decentralization of influence, increased intraregional connectivity and cooperation and the rise of a strong talent pipeline and creativity in Asia - it’s going to be an interesting time for brands and leaders to capitalize on. #globaldesign #creativity #Growth #asia

#collaborating with #designers we can design products that promote #inclusivity by creating both products and environments that cater to a #diverse #range of users, irrespective of age, ability, or background, products that address #sensory #sensitivity aiming to offer small #accommodation that are not relevant for most of the users, but that can make a #strong #difference for people #overload by sensory stimulation.

TDC 2024. — Some thoughts on The Design Conference, both as giver and receiver. AI Unsurprisingly, the spectre of AI loomed large. Many spoke of utilising AI tools for efficiencies, few discussed its creative potential with a few exceptions including Kelvin Soh. Describing AI as ‘a tool like any other’ recalls the discussions around desktop publishing in the early 1990s; with no point of reference for such technology, defaulting to something familiar is comforting. My Mucho colleague (and co-presenter) Rob Duncan proposed an increasing focus on design that reveals the presence of the human hand or mind, a way to create distinction through ideas and crafted outcomes. Style-based designers beware. Mental Health In 2013 at Semi Permanent New Zealand I broke down on stage while speaking about the challenges of juggling life’s roles as a business-owner, designer, husband and father. Losing my composure in front of so many of my peers wasn’t planned, but I was reassured by the number of attendees who later confided their own challenges in me.  Now, over a decade later, it is clear that conferences like TDC are platforms for creatives to share their experiences, good and bad. Beyond this generally positive trend towards openness, a more important shift is fostering a culture of support and solutions. Noteworthy examples, such as Emmi Salonen's brilliant presentation on her Creative Ecosystem model, underscored the importance of proactive approaches to sustaining creative wellbeing. Leadership Leadership, in its myriad forms, also took centre stage, particularly through the inspiring words of Anzac Tasker FDINZ, who championed the role of design as a force for positive change. Over the last two decades, The Designers Institute of Aotearoa/New Zealand has been progressively weaving the normalisation of Tikanga Māori (indigenous practices) into its fabric and the roots of its design industry. Anzac is the Institute’s Co-President, and now as ECD of Guardians – Ahiauaha he continues to put Te Ao Māori (an indigenous lens) at the heart of each project. Progressive leadership like this is yet another reason for us to look admiringly across the ditch. Community Perhaps the biggest revelation for me was the unscripted discourse occurring organically after each session. Listening to such vibrant dialogue recalled a time before IG messages or texts, when we looked each other in the eye and really engaged in discussion. It’s clear, given the mental health challenges and isolation of the past few years, we are seeking human interaction more than ever. Design conferences have become critical conduits for such interchange, and this year’s TDC was a reminder that interaction is a possible cure for isolation. I spoke with a design leader the other day who shared some intriguing insights about managing a global team. They mentioned how great it can be to collaborate across time zones, like when a brainstorming session in New York wraps up just as the team in Tokyo starts their day, bringing fresh perspectives to the table. However, they also acknowledged the challenges that come with it, such as ensuring clear communication and maintaining a cohesive culture. Working with diverse teams offers incredible opportunities for innovation, but it requires intentional effort to bridge those gaps and keep everyone aligned. When my time comes. 'Extended Love' is going to be on my highlight reel. For all the right reasons and intentions, it delivered astonishing results for work meant to connect with all Singaporeans. I have always said that when it comes to government work it has to always mean more. If I may, I have learned three things from this entire process, from pitch to production. 1️⃣ No matter how you skin the cat, when stories are built and surrounded by values, cut through and impact will go beyond your intended audience, driving relatability regardless of season. 2️⃣ Trust is built on mutual respect and openness. We should already know this, but it is not always apparent. It takes hard work and commitment from both the agency and clients to create something unique, and this piece of work reflects that. 3️⃣ Let the work breathe. Give it some liberties and watch it fly. Bonus (sounds obvious but!) - Craft. Craft. Craft. Your audience will appreciate it One for the records. 18.6million views over a relatively short amount of time and significant improvement when it comes to understanding what it means to be Singaporean as we move Forward Together. As the new chief creative officer of Clemenger BBDO, Adrián Flores will contribute his worldwide perspective of producing work to Clemenger BBDO at the nexus of brand, entertainment, and culture.
