Engaging End-Users in SmartCHANGE: A Participatory Design Approach The SmartCHANGE project places a strong emphasis on involving end-users and stakeholders throughout the development process. Tuija Tammelin from JAMK University of Applied Sciences in #Finland explains the current focus: "This project is taking the end users and stakeholders into account in many ways. And at this phase we are making participatory design of the application, the web application and the mobile application." This approach ensures that the resulting tools will be both effective and user-friendly, addressing the real needs of families, adolescents, and healthcare professionals. A Multi-National Participatory Study To gather comprehensive insights, the project has initiated an extensive participatory design study. Tammelin elaborates: "We have a special participatory design study going on in four countries and different processes for families and adolescents and for healthcare professionals. [...] we will get a lot of information about what they think about artificial intelligence and about this kind of web applications or mobile application related to health." This multi-faceted approach aims to capture diverse perspectives on artificial intelligence in health applications across different user groups and cultural contexts. Exploring Key Aspects of Health and Wellbeing The participatory design process delves into various crucial elements of health applications. Tammelin outlines the areas of focus: "From this participatory design study, we have thought that information, what they think about wellbeing, what kind of social aspect should be included into the application, and how the health in general should be talked about in this applications." For healthcare professionals, the study explores "what they think about how trustful is [...] and what would help them to give this kind of health guidance to the patients." Navigating Challenges in the Process While the participatory design approach offers valuable insights, it's not without its challenges. Tammelin acknowledges some obstacles: "[...] the timeline is very tight and we have some problems in the beginning or recruiting participants for some groups." Despite these hurdles, the team remains committed to the process, adapting their approach as needed: "We will handle this by making the plans for the autumn together [...] making the process a week quicker for the autumn." By prioritising user engagement and adapting to challenges, Tammelin and her colleagues are ensuring that the SmartCHANGE project develops AI-based health applications that truly meet the needs of its intended users, potentially revolutionising how we approach health monitoring and disease prevention for young people. We’ve recently begun an exciting new project at the UX Foundry Cohort, which is to redesign the homepage of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). Today, my exceptional teammates and I conducted a comprehensive UX audit to better understand our target audience and uncover key areas for improvement. from the audit we were able to come up with the following insights, which includes; 🔍 Audit Insights: Cluttered Layout: The current homepage overwhelms visitors with too much information. Our focus is on simplifying the design to deliver a cleaner and more engaging experience. Streamlined Navigation: Navigation was a major challenge, especially for new users. We’re rethinking the menu structure to enhance user flow and make it more intuitive. Mobile Optimization: Many users access the site via mobile, so we’re optimizing the mobile experience to ensure smoother interactions and quicker access to essential information. Clear Content Prioritization: The homepage was overloaded with text. We’re introducing a more effective content hierarchy, including student testimonials and success stories to boost engagement and build trust. Improved Search & Call-to-Action (CTAs): We’re refining the search functionality for better filtering and ensuring that CTAs like "Apply Now" and "Enroll" are more prominent and visually appealing. Integrated Learning Tools: We’re incorporating demo courses, webinars, and accessible online support tools to give prospective students a preview of NOUN’s offerings right from the homepage. 🤓 I love full-circle moments and guiding the next generation of designers. Yesterday, I returned to where my journey as a product designer began. I attended the design course’s final project presentations, which got me into UX/UI. This time, I was there to critique and guide the next generation of designers. When I started, I didn’t have many mentors to guide me through my first steps in the design world. Learning the complexities of the product world was challenging, and I often wished for more experienced voices to help steer me in the right direction. The room was tense. It’s not an easy time where I come from, with the threat of a missile attack ever imminent. Despite the stress, each project offered a fresh perspective and innovative approach. However, I noticed the overuse of AI chat in their projects. As I offered my critiques, I focused on providing actionable insights. I emphasized the importance of user-centric design and the need for consistency across their projects. The note I repeated most was “strip it down,” focusing on a niche rather than trying to solve all the world’s issues with one app. The talent in the room was unmistakable. One project stood out for its creative solution related to LGBTQIA+ individuals who struggle socially, where most apps today are toxic and revolve around dating and sex (I’ll share more soon). 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ I am grateful for the opportunity to give back. Moments like these fuel my commitment to mentoring and helping start-ups make informed design decisions. Whether through free junior mentoring sessions or providing critique at final presentations, my goal is to support and inspire the next generation of designers. Earlier this week I was delighted to participate in the first Cambridge Design Community 'Share & Learn' meeting. Over the years there's been some wonderful local UX and design meetups in Cambridge. After Tuesday's event with such a great turnout, I realised how much I've missed the in-person buzz and vibe of like-minded people informally gathering with a passion to share and learn. It feels like it's been a long time coming. It was wonderful to hear Michele Ide-Smith and Ivanna Pidruchna talk about their use of assumptions mapping and (re)designing complex interfaces both in very technical and scientific areas, with the aim of understanding the complex and avoiding the complicated. Doing anything with a broad set of yet-to-be-discovered user needs is so often a matter of finding the best compromise, and seeking out and understanding the evidence for landing on that tipping point is critical. I've always valued the different perspectives and lenses through which others solve problems. I spoke about my advocacy efforts in raising awareness of digital accessibility needs and best practices across our products. I talked about what I've been doing, what's worked well, and what's been less effective. It's fair to say it's a long and challenging journey that needs constant attention, but it is reaping rewards! And then when it's all over, there's the next one to plan! Of course it's all for nothing without the people who care enough to give their time to come out on a dark autumnal evening to support, participate, and engage with great questions. Networking and conversation continued after the event and then at the pub afterwards. It was great to see new faces and catch up with old friends.
