  • This year's World Mental Health Day theme is "Mental Health at Work" 💪 ⛑️ 👨💻 In Singapore's fast-paced work environment, where work-life integration is the norm, it's easy to overlook our well-being. Stress can be beneficial in the short term by driving us to reach our goals, but chronic and overwhelming stress can lead to burnout, affecting both personal health and job performance. 🤕 Prioritising mental health in the workplace is not only crucial for employees' well-being, but it also helps organisations save on annual medical costs. Dr. Pearlene Ng, Deputy Programme Director & Education Director (Psychology) of NUS Yeo Boon Khim Mind Science Centre, shares insights on recognising signs of burnout, its causes, and practical tips on building resilience, setting boundaries, and promoting a supportive workplace culture. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthAtWork #PreventBurnout #BuildResilience #WorkLifeBalance

  • We are delighted to announce the graduation of the pioneer batch of 19 trained seniors from the #AgeWellEveryday (AWE) Programme's “Where-there-is-no-psychiatrist project” on 31 August 2024 🎓 This event marks a significant milestone as Asia’s first programme of its kind, training seniors to be psychological first-aiders for their peers. Dedicated seniors from Tampines/Punggol and Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery 光明山普觉禅寺 have successfully completed four weekly Saturday workshops. Their training, an elective in our “Age Well Ambassador” volunteer training programme, equips them to support fellow seniors experiencing mild mental health issues such as grief, loneliness, and anxiety. From the studies conducted by Prof Shefaly Shorey, about 5-7% of the population have mental illness and are treated in hospitals or clinics by psychiatrists or psychologists. Another 10-15% with mild #mentalillness are managed by GPs or at polyclinics. This initiative addresses the #mentalhealth needs of approximately 20% of people who experience mental health symptoms but do not have a diagnosed mental illness. The comprehensive curriculum includes: 🧍♂️ Profile of a Befriender 🔍 Detecting Early Signs of Mental Distress 👂 Understanding Active Listening and Empathy 🧘 Mindful Awareness Practice (MAP) 🎯 Solution Focus ⚖️ Ethical Issues 🧖 Self-Care and When to Refer The #workshops involve lectures, experiential learning, and role play, ensuring our graduates are well-prepared to offer support and intervene early. We commend our graduates for their commitment and compassion in supporting their communities and making a difference in the mental well-being of others. • 🎭✨ It's a wrap for the I'MPERFECT musical! 🌟✨ A massive THANK YOU to everyone who supported the #MindScienceCentre along this incredible journey. 🙌❤️ To our phenomenal producer, cast, and crew, your blood, sweat, and tears brought magic to the stage tonight. Your talent and hard work have been truly inspiring. 🎤🎶 The #IMPERFECT musical celebrates the beauty in our flaws and reminds us that it's okay not to be okay. You can be perfectly imperfectly perfect just the way you are. 🌈⭐ The Mind Science Centre is honoured to have Guest of Honour Minister for Health Mr Ong Ye Kung grace the night and witness the cheque presentation of a remarkable $3 million endowment gift from Dr Della Lee and the D.S. Lee Foundation. Dr Astrid Suantio presented the cheque on behalf of her aunt, Dr Della Lee. This gift has enabled NUS to establish a new 🎓 "Della Suantio Lee Professorship in Mental Health and Digital Science" at NUS Yeo Boon Khim Mind Science Centre and NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. This endowed professorship will lead efforts in the investigation and research in Digital Science to innovate change in mental health care delivery. A portion of the endowment will also be dedicated to the newly named D.S. Lee Foundation Mind Art Experiential Lab (MAELab) at Alexandra Hospital, Singapore. This will enable MAELab to continue its mission of education and research, promoting mental wellness 🧠 through creative and integrative interventions. • On 12 July 2024, we continued our journey with the NUS Greater Good Series, focusing on "Diet, Nutrition, and Mental Health." This event was made possible by the generous donation of Mr Tan Kwang Hwee, Managing Director of Newsman Realty, who established the Mind Science Centre’s Greater Good Series in 2016. We are deeply grateful for his continued support. We had the privilege of inviting A/Professor Mary Chong from the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, an expert in dietetic research and Maternal and Child Nutrition, and NUS Distinguished Professor Barry Halliwell, a leader in biochemistry and mental health research, as guest speakers. A/Prof Mary shared on 'Nutrition for Our Mind and Body,' enlightening us on the types of food 🥑 🍽️ that are beneficial for our diet and overall mental well-being. Meanwhile, Prof Barry captivated the audience with his discussion on 'Ergothioneine: A Novel Neuroprotective Agent,' highlighting the power of this vital diet-derived compound found abundantly in various foods essential 🍄 for maintaining brain health. Guests had the opportunity to learn healthier ways to eat for brain health! Their valuable insights and research findings inspired action and advanced mental health and well-being initiatives. #NUS #GreaterGoodSeries #MentalHealth #Nutrition #Diet #Wellbeing
